Glare Wash SPOTS after washing and wiping!!!
« on: August 28, 2011, 08:45:56 PM »

I've used Glare products for about the past year and generally very satisfied with all EXCEPT.   On a few occasions after I was, rinse, blow dry and micro fiber towel dry the bike my bike has little white spots left on some of the paint surface.  Anyone know what this is or how it's caused?

Mine will do that no matter what kind of wash liquid I use, if I don't dry it off fast enough...and I use Glare wash.  But it will do it with other brands as well.  In my case, I am convinced it is because of the hard water (alkaline with minerals that form scale in pipes, etc).

I'm with TC Terry and it could be salt deposits if you have a softener.

Yup, dissolved minerals in the rinse water.  If you use an automated car wash for your car, I'm sure you've seen the "Spot Free Rinse".  That is deionized water, which means it's been run through a special filter bed to remove mineral ions.  The reason for using it is to avoid those same white spots you're seeing, and it's quite effective if you use enough DI water to thoroughly flush off all the regular water lurking in the nooks and crannies.  Most car washes I've used scrimp on the DI water due to costs, so it's still not perfect and some spots remain to be removed by hand with detailer spray or just a wet rag and dry cloth.

There used to be a DIY device that included a soap dispenser/spray nozzle/deionizing rinse water filter called the Mr. Clean Auto Dry carwashing system.  It was marginally effective, but as best I can tell they no longer sell it.  If you want deionized rinse water you will probably have to buy the filters and rig up your own system.  I seem to remember when we had this discussion on the board a year or two back that one member had a neat system set up in his garage, maybe he will see this thread and chime in.

Mr. clean worked great, however I don't think they make it any more.  I tried a number of stores and no one carried it.  I found some at a close out sale online, a couple of months ago.

I've been using the Mr. Clean Carwash System for years. It's the best way to clean bikes that I've found. I did call the company and they no longer make it. I guess I'm gonna have to try an inline water softener.

I use and can recommend products by CRSpotless.com   They sell several sizes of de-ionizers, along with bulk resin. Definitely not cheap, but extremely effective. I have the DIC-20, which has an electronic purity meter to indicate when the resin is getting depleted.

My local water is quite hard; around 30 grains of hardness! After washing, I can perform a final rinse on a black vehicle and never have any water spots, even if I park in direct sun while drying (tried this for curiosities sake). Be sure to use only for a final rinse, as the cost per gallon is really high!!

I've also used the Mr. Clean device years ago and it did work pretty well, it just didn't have much capacity.

But after saying all this; I prefer to clean my Street Glide using Zaino Z-6 quick detailer whenever possible. If my bike is not terribly dirty, I throw it up on a jack and CAREFULLY clean with several microfibers and plenty of Z-6. Takes a bit of time, but I don't have water drips to dry off later, and the quick detailer helps to prolong the paint sealant (Zaino Clear Seal), too.

Not trying to sound like a shill for either company; just mentioning what works well for me ...

That 'detailer' clean-up works well Mike if you don't ride on wet roads....but after getting caught in the rain, ya gotta wash with water due to the oily frame and everything else.  :nervous: :( spyder

I luv Candy Coatâ„¢ Motorcycle & Auto Detailer spray.  I spray it on everything after I blow dry while I still have moisture on my bike, then use soft cloths to dry and the hard water marks go away easily.
