Windshield retainer clips Question
« on: July 03, 2008, 08:28:45 AM »

I removed my windshield and went for a ride w/o and when I put it back on I found that the retaining clips are useless. Am I doing something wrong? The wire clips don't clip into anything, so thet look usless.

i assume you mean the the wire loops above the top mounts. you need to lift up on them to remove the shield. but your right the dont look like they do much of anything

i use my heel shifter all the time.. :2vrolijk_21:

on my fltr i simply cut the shifter (rubber piece) to about 3/4" when i installed my lowers.
amazing how it frees up the floorboard. i've been meaning to get a shouldered bolt for my flhrse3 for the same effect.

and the windshield wires are for handling more than securing. :drink:

The wire retainer on mine doesn't even come close to anything, just sits in mid-air.  With visions of the screen flying up into my face, I wrap some safety wire around the mount and clip on the rare occasions that I use a windshield (which has become never due to teeth chattering buffetting on both the stock one and Clearview replacement).  The heel shifter arm came off shortly after the bike came home.

I losened the bolts and moved them as close as possible, then I grabbed the vice grips (with vinyl condoms of course) and bent the crap out of them.
Now the windshield will NOT come off without lifting them up.  Back a year or so, a member posted that he parked near where he worked and a helicopter landed at the hospital.  The propwash blew his windshield off and hit his fender.  At that moment I went outside and made the adjustment.

Also just checked another.  Thank god there is not a peerintothemindofDood.com.  That would be a weird and disturbing place indeed.

Only heel shifter I ever had prior to the SEEG was on my first bike, a 90cc Bridgestone in 1966.  It survived approximately one week before I hacksawed that sucker (it was one piece, unlike the Harley version).  The SEEG lost the heel shifter the day after it came home and it has never been missed.  If you have a transmission that shifts properly, I don't see any need for a heel shifter.  Sure, when you have one that shifts like crap it might help to be able to pound it into gear with your heel, but that method makes me cringe every time I see and hear someone doing it.  Best thing about getting rid of it is the freedom of movement you gain, and a secondary consideration is not worrying about having the POS jammed through your ankle in an accident.  Besides, without the scuff mark on the top of your left boot, how is anyone going to know you're a real biker and not just another poser?

Don't wear flip flops, but that is one thing I like about having a heel shifter. I marked up so many pairs of shoes/boots before having a heel shifter. I didn't think I was going to like it when I got my first Harley (Fatboy), but after I got the bike I really like using it and wouldn't think of taking it off. When I was having problems w/my hip before it was replaced it was nice having the heel shifter and not having to shift (up) w/my toes as that movement was uncomfortable.

Boy did I have a comeback for that one Chip.  And then I scrolled down and you let all the air out.

One of my biggest pet peeves is folks wearing sandals, flip-flops, even sneakers on a motorcycle.  I'm guessing you knew that.

Not so fast.  I marked one pair of boots and that was enough for me.
Took me about day and half to get used to heel shifting and never went back.

As for the wire clip on windshield, it only serves as a reminder of extra money I've paid for useless items from Mo Co.   :beatdeadhorse:
Maybe they were put there in case they make a bike with reverse gear  :vrolijk27:

I just have to remember not to park away from hilo pads.

Some engineer/designer designed them and was probably REALLY proud of them, and now some HD employee is the wind shield release wire thing guy on the assembly line and is pretty proud of his job...

Cant disappoint them!   :nixweiss:

I believe those clips were only put there to serve as an added noise ( mine rattle ) source to prevent the rider from concentrating on the noises coming from the engine. ;D

Those aren't mine they just offered a nice background. Thought it was nice to have real horses behind the iron horse. :2vrolijk_21:
