Dammit, so I got dummer when I wacked off part of the finger and older?  That's just not fair.

OK, so whacked off the finger is French for something personal, right?  ;D :D

Howie, just thought of one other potential "thing."  Is the part number for the gauge you provided a complete unit or is there some outer trim ring that's separated from the center gauge assembly?

Sorry, no nubby jokes. It's too early for me! ::) ;D

It says it includes 72990-01. That P/N doesn't appear in the list of P/N's at all, so I'm not sure what part it is. I doubt it's the trim ring. I think that's built into the housing which is P/N 62834-07. You'd prolly want to buy it as a complete kit with the gas cap and everything you'd need. Just make sure they order you a RED one is all, one would think. ;)

72990-01 is a 12 cent terminal pin.  Something at the end of a harness.  The 62834-07 is described as a "housing assembly" for the pop up gas cap.  So long as you're not seeing a separate part number for the pop up center cap itself that must be it.  Only a about 30 bucks so if that is the whole thing it's not too bad.

Back to the original thought; would the flush mount style of gauges akin to what's on the new SERKs work on the 02 when the P&A fitment description for the kit 62823-06A says otherwise?  That kit gives a fitment of simply "04-07 Road King."

Compared schematics of pre and post 04 bikes.  Specifically 02 in question and an 05.  While termination points away from the gauge and sending unit for 12v supply vary between the accessory or the instrument circuit they still get fed.  Common is, well; common.  And the 05 has a T off the run between the sender and the gauge that the 02 does not.  It feeds the low fuel idiot light in the speedometer.  No impact on gauge function there either.  Just a difference of there being an idiot light or not.

From all that, and fitment descriptions notwithstanding, it looks like it should work.  Seemed to lean even further toward that when comparing other LED fuel gauges Harley offers.  All the precedent offerings have a fitment description of:

"Fits '04-'08 FXDB, FXDL, FXD35, FXDWG and FXDF models, '07-'08 FXDC models, '04-'07 Softail® models, '01-'03 EFI Softail® models (except FXSTDI), '03-'07 Road King® and '01-'02 EFI Road King® models"

So at least for EFI bikes the LED gauges reach back as far as 01.  Looked at the PDFs of a couple of their install docs and nothing different about the physical or electrical connections on any of them.  Might later be proved wrong by something not being recognized but it seem so far as if this could be another case of P&A fitment descriptions not being accurate or not throwing as wide a net as they might.

Should anyone stumble through this later and see the various part numbers I bandied around nothing mentioned previously ended up covering all the bases.  If someone were wishing to put together a gauge kit and gas cap kit from scratch you'd need the following:

63074-07A gas gauge assy with red LEDs (with harness) $145
62834-07 gas gauge housing $35
62825-06B gas cap $64
63039-07 gas cap trim ring $12

If one were interested in the same with blue LEDs Harley offers that with both gauge and cap together in a complete kit for $200.  Kit part number 62823-06A.  At least currently they don't offer a red LED version of the kit though (dammit).
