Wierd
« on: November 22, 2011, 11:19:56 AM »

I just went out to the garage and after not riding the SERK in three days I noticed a small drop of oil on the exhaust side of the bike. The oil was tacky so Im assuming it came off of the bike when I last rode it. Its a very small drop of oil. Does anyone know what this could be? I have looked the bike over and dont see any leaks, and dont see any wet spots of oil. Just wierd.

Same thing happened this morn to me....on the right side exhaust.  Have not had a chance to investigate yet though. I'll be giving it a thorough cleaning for it's hibernation and hopefully find something easy to fix.

You don't say if it's forward or aft.  Assuming it's up around the engine it's probably just dripped out of the air cleaner.  Simply a small bit of blow by.  Not weird at all for one of these engines.

Even if mid muffler, likely (but not only possible) cause is air cleaner blow back like Don said above.  Were you riding hard or at high speed last ride?  Oil likely blew onto right side bag and dripped....   :nixweiss:   Confirm by looking at front of bag.

Basically, is the oil in a more or less direct line with the bottom of the air cleaner?  Bottom of air filter becomes saturated with oil mist and it then drips on things like the cam chest cover, the heat shield on the header, or blows back onto other stuff, including your BSR's right leg.

As Greg mentioned, running at high RPM can make the misting worse, and some motors don't "like" being all the way full of oil in the crankcase, so they puke it out the A/C.  Take the A/C assembly apart, clean the filter (or replace with a K&N), and it's good to go 'till it happens again.  And don't fret too much if the oil level in the crankcase is 1/4-1/2 quart low.

That's good news.  Simple problems with simple solutions are always a relief.  Anywhere under or in line behind the air cleaner for a slight mist of or even a drip of oil will always have the air cleaner as a good bet.  If that's all you ever see just clean it up and ride on.  If it gets so bad as to actually make a consistent mess it'll then be time to start checking things out.

If I didn't 'de-oil' the front of my right saddlebag on the SEEG ea. time I rode it, I'd have more than one drip for sure.  har.  spyder
