Title: Harley Promotion
Post by: hd-dude on December 18, 2008, 12:07:19 AM
Just got a Harley promotion in the mail that is pushing the new 09 touring bikes.  There are two cards in the package.  One is good for a FREE 100 years of Harley Davidson book when you demo ride a new touring bike.  The other card is good for 2009 miles of Shell V-Power Gasoline when you buy any new 2008 or 2009 H-D touring motorcycle.

They need to do a lot more than this to get the bikes moving!

Who else got one?

Hey Jim, do those loud lids work with the Hawg Wired?

Yup, I got one also.  Like you said, they'll need to come up with something one heck of a lot better than that if they really want to move some iron.

A coworker who rides a V-Star got one.  The gas card is good for less than $100 worth of gas at today's prices.   Most dealers don't have a clue, think it is selling as usual (no discounting).

Obviously the Mother Ship still thinks the consumers are all ignorant and can't figure out that 2009 miles of gas (not gallons) is a proverbial drop in the bucket.  And the book is nothing special, they handed those out like candy to all the 110 suckers buyers already.

Maybe when the spoiled stockholders start kicking some ass you will see some real marketing solutions, like maybe 0% loans or, God forbid, discounts.

They should start throwing in the 7yr ESP. Might restore some confidence with some, while still giving a decent discount! ;)

Excellent idea!!!!!  :2vrolijk_21:
If they advertised it as "we stand behind our quality product......etc." it could increase customer confidence and they could also advertise as the longest factory warranty in the market etc.
The cost to the MOCO would be deferred over the years and only be paid out in the event of a claim. I guess some loss due to no sale of the extended warranty. Not sure if the MOCO gets pure profit on that or if an underwriter third party company get majority of sale price?

Here's the problem as I see it. First, the credit arm of Harley gave too many people loans
that couldn't afford the bikes. They were upside down, before they got out the door.
Second, people who want new bikes now, can't get loans because the banks & Harley
have tightened up loan requirements. Look at the housing & auto industries.
Harley will NEVER sell as many bikes as in the past, neither will the auto industry. It's
a new world with the credit crunch. The people who CAN afford to buy will buy, but they will
take it in the shorts, with their trade in, or if they try to sell outright. The used car market
has TANKED, because of the same problem.

Yep.

That would go a long way towards resoring confidence.  Even if it was just a power train warranty.

I got one also.  Made me wonder if the local dealer would really let me take a new bike out for a test ride considering the depth of the snow and ice on the roads this weeks?   ???

Typical H-D.   :confused5:

Nothing here and I own tow da** bikes :confused5:

Not that it would make any difference.  I am waiting until the discounting starts.  I saw an add where one dealer is discounting his 2008's 20% off and his 2009's 10% off MSRP.  Can't remember if it was local to DFW or not.

The prices will come down.  As others have mentioned, the credit crunch is hitting them hard, based upon their portfolios.

Local dealer here has a new Heritage Softail sitting on the floor and they are lowering the price $100.00 per day until the bike sells.  I'm waiting to see if it gets low enough that I can trade the wife's sportster for in even up for it.   ;)

You're special Travis.  Nothing here.

Would you like mine?

I got one.  Rather expensive looking piece of paper and plastic.  Reminded me of the Mac commercial where they talk about Microsoft spending money on advertising and nothing on fixing Vista.  Mine went into the recycle bin.

As for ever offering a 7 year ESP, remember how long HD had a 6-month warranty when everyone else had one or two years?  Then when everyone else has two or more they upped it to a year?  They know better than to warranty their stuff that long.

Nah, thanks though.  My winter TP stock is good.  And it's pre-softened too.

Yeah! I'd agree. However, with the reduction in production numbers we'll see even fewer bikes over here. Only 25% of production is earmarked for export at the max.
Saw the first '09 SEUC on the floor yesterday over here. I've seen the bike already at the 105th, but we're still excited. Unfortunately its not mine, because it is the slow orange one.

Ride safely,
Louis

I have been in automotive sales for over 25 years. IMO one of the best things anyone can do for a customer is give them ESP. B

Got mine in the mail about a week ago (was that even two weeks after buying Terrie's 09 SG?).

But, since I have a deposit on a 2010 CVO.......it would be nice if they'd drop interest rates down to something more reasonable and in line with what the current interest rates are.  Terrie's factory warranty is 2 1/2 years but it'd be nice if they bumped that up to four......even three years! :2vrolijk_21:

never a true word was written, tis the same this side of the pond,
I always thought that was the main reason HD has the 883 in the product line, relatively cheap (for a harley) the rider digs deep in there pocket to buy it, gets hooked into the way of life then upgrades to a twin cam, often enough the new big twin owner also regrets having to trade in there beloved first harley and wishes they had never sold it.

Yes that is right. In fact my first Harley was 883 Sportster and I knew already on the ride back from the dealer, that I had to upgrade to a big twin. That happened one season later.

Ride safely,
