So I made a somewhat last minute decision to attend the Sturgis 75th Anniversary Rally this year when I saw how many of the CVO Harley.com people were going to be in attendance. Luckily I was able to scare up a room at the Hilton Garden Inn, Rapid City and 2 roomates from the CVO group, CAMCVO and JPB aka John. We all arrived on Sunday Aug 2nd and proceeded to get to know each other over dinner and drinks. The planning commenced. We arranged to do some things together and others separately.
Here was my resulting agenda for the week in the Black Hills.
Monday - Wall Drug and the Badlands, been 35+yrs since the last time I had visited Wall, SD
Tuesday - Hill City, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore
Wednesday - Black Hills Harley, Sturgis and Deadwood as I figured most everyone would run out to Hulett looking for Commandos
Thursday - Sturgis, Hulett and Devil's Tower
Friday - pack and head home with a stop in Colorado (Rainy forecast made me decide to head home early)
Saturday - completed the trip home, remind me never to move to Denver - Traffic from Thornton to Denver was miserable.

Saturday - Final Trek through southern Colorado and New Mexico .. more and more clouds along the way. For most of the trip I managed to avoid rain. However, the last 55 miles between Santa Fe and Albuquerque ended in a relentless rain. You can see the storm clouds brewing along the way throughout the last group of pictures.

Yup.. didn't get Needles in on this trip. Did do Custer Park but there was a lot of traffic and paid more attention to the road than the scenery. People pulling over to pet Mules .. who'd of thunk it?

Was not a bad rally...crowded a bit but if you get out early before all those with a hangover wake up/ride, the traffic wasn't that bad.
Why in the world Deadwood decided to tear up their main road for construction is beyond me but otherwise, great roads to ride upon in the Black Hills.

and I am really curious on what Camera did you use?
I used to run around with a small Canon Elph 300 HS and a Nikon D7000. The D7000 takes really nice pictures but it's a bit bulky. Then I started using my iPhone 6+ but it's a bit cumbersome too and limited. So I bought a used Sony a6000 that came with a 18-55mm and 55-210mm lens. Then I picked up a 35mm f1.8 lens as a primary lens. Most of these shots were taken using the 35mm lens. The only exception are some of the shots at Crazy Horse, closeup bust of the Chief being one of those.
As Jock will tell you, you can take great pictures with just about any camera. The camera is not the main driver in good pictures. However, to get some of the effects such as DOF, depth of field, you need to be able to operate the camera a bit beyond simple point and shoot. Here's what I find helps the most.
1. Take lots and lots of pictures. I took nearly 600 pictures with the Sony. I posted 200 pictures. Normally I only post about 10% of the pictures I take. Normally I take a 1000 pictures and might post 100.
2. Take shots from different angles and perspective than the obvious. Shots like the staircase at the Badlands .. not something most people would capture.
3. Framing or composition is something that you'll understand and get better at over time. I still work on it every time I shoot. I don't know that I can explain it but it's a matter of balancing foreground, background and the surroundings. You don't want people with lamp posts coming out of their heads. You don't want a big mountain without seeing some sky. How would you know the size of that mountain if there wasn't a point of reference such as the sky and the meadow in the bottom and top of the shot to give it a point of reference.
4. Every shot, even of the 200, is not going to be perfect. Be prepared to throw a lot of pictures into the data dump. Also, I used Google's Picasa to straighten pictures and sometimes crop them to get the right framing.
Sorry .. getting carried away. Point is that you should practice, practice and practice some more. With today's technology we have the benefit of taking 1000's of pictures and just deleting the ones we don't like. A vast improvement over the cost of film and printing of only a few decades ago. We live in wonderful times.

Yeah.. all a matter of timing. And you are right on the traffic flow. I hit most of these places at low times with the exception of Wall Drug perhaps. As far as running into each other, at least we got to meet for dinner. I did run into 3 people unexpectedly. Jock at Crazy Horse. Alan Paz at Rushmore, Alan was at the Ouray GTG. And the former Finance Manager at Santa Fe HD, Greg, spotted me at Wall Drug. I wonder how he picked me out of the huge crowd? :nixweiss:

Great pics and write up. We did all these roads and attractions. And more. I gotta start downloading the pictures. Honestly all the roads were greater than Sturgis itself. We stayed in Custer and found the best burger in America at the Black Hills Burger & Bun Co. Best burger ever...

I got my first DSLR camera (Nikon D3200) a week before Sturgis. We are still learning how to use it. We took almost 900 pics and I only saved about 260. Probably could have narrowed it down more but this thing takes nice pics (to me) and I can't wait to learn how to use it!

They called it "No pantie Wednesday" last time I was there. but I saw nothing out of the ordinary..........except double the traffic as any other day. Went back again on Saturday and the Rock House had 7 scooters in front of it, fine time to add my name to the wall.
