Obvious case of Global Warming Ride Abort Syndrome.

Went for a ride tonight to a bike night.  For vet charity, a good one.  Heat index is 105.  Humidity is "#$%@& extreme sauna".  Made a donation, paid my respects, and left when my clothes were about as wet as the thunderheads on the horizon.  Home 5 minutes, the bottom dropped out.  Beer there was $6 a glass, here at home is considerably less.

I'm not very smart either Mike.  I left anyway.  Really wanted good fried chicken and my favorite place is about 45 minutes away. Sitting there right now. A little Rhodes doing 65 or 70 and for less than an hour it was just another great ride. The road king Dash instrument will display cylinder head temperature so out of curiosity that's what I had on coming over here. At 65 to 70 it was showing about 240 to 245. When I had to slow down on I-35 and 44 the last mile it visited 260. My bikes are liquid cooled too.  It's just the liquid is enough fuel to actually get the job done.

Oh my sitting here a little Mom and Pop's Fried Chicken Place called Chicken Mary's.  I love this place. Always busy and always friendly. My waitress tonight is a brand-new first night on the job 17 or 18 year old kid named Grace. She seems nervous as hell. I think I gave her a $10 tip for the $12 meal to make her night.

Made her night for sure Don!  A good place, no doubt.

Still raining here, for about an hour now, temp has dropped to 86.  Charity was a good cause, but the bike night location is my least favorite in town.  Over priced beer & they brag on their baked chicken wings.  Not sure why they do, nothing to brag about from what I have had there.  Big semi foo foo chain place with 8x10 glossy full color menu describing all the wunnerfulness of the foo-fooeries.  They had a good turnout, saw a lot of riding friends.  Talked to a buddy who just got back from a 5,000 mile ride, we compared notes on stuff in Upper Michigan.  All good.  They were on a patio, either they are getting wet or moved inside to the A/C, were slammed before I left.

Am eating a home cooked ham green bean casserole that is light years better than anything on their menu. Followed by a home made spice cake with cream cheese icing.  If still hungry, there is always ice cream.  May wander amok on a ride tomorrow, with no particular place to go.  Lately that has been my favorite.

Home just a little bit ago. Took the long cut home.  Dinner was excellent.  The waitress was trying so very hard and was so sweet even though she was fighting through learning everything.  She thanked me for being a dirty old man nice while mentioning others hadn't been so patient her first night.  Left $20 on the table as I headed out and smiled all the way home.

A fine evening!

Just realized, in the hour+ I was at the bike night restaurant, never had one waiter/waitress.  20-25 people in our group.  When anybody wanted a drink, they left our tables and went to the bar to get it themselves.  Plenty of wait staff, a lot of them on the patio, just not working the area we were in. We had menus, nobody placed a food order, because....nobody.   Odd.  I tipped accordingly.

On a better note the wife went grocery shopping while I was bike nighting and returned with....Peanut M&Ms.  My all time favorite candy.   :2vrolijk_21:

I have never, not even on Indian summer evening when I was 28 and on a dare from a girl name Tammi (even if she was on the back seat "steering") rode down the highway at about midnight in my birthday suit.  Never.

If there are not any pictures, it never happened.

Reminds me, if there had been cell phone cameras when I was younger, a lot more stuff would have happened.

Don,

Pittsburg, KS.  Actually just north of.

Interesting local restaurant history.  Something of a feud actually.  Chicken Mary's and Chicken Annie's.  I've read (and forgot) the details many times probably.  There was one.  Then there was the other.  Some family tie.  Then competition.  The newbie has only been in business like 65 years.  The original a good ten years longer.  Neighbors on what I call "chicken dinner road" but is actually E. 600th Ave.  Sometimes competition, occasional (weird) fanboys, but always fried chicken.

The two places are literally right next to each other.  So which one I visit simply depends on which way I'm coming from as I get there.  There's also another branch of the chicken feud.  That's Pichler's Chicken Annies.  They're also a very long established place now.  Pichler's is good too.  It is actually 15 minutes closer to me.  It's almost too close.

Dammit, now I'm hungry.

Rode 600 miles on this day....  the water bottle I brought to hydrate was also 115 degrees so it was like drinking hot coffee.   I ended up just poring it into the wind in front of me and soaking myself for about 4 minutes....then it was gone.

Hope it was a good ride.  Never decided whether gawdawful hot or brutally cold days in the saddle were worse.  Actually it may be an easy choice.  Worse was always cold and wet.  That combination truly sucked.

Only way I ride in the cold or the wet is if I get caught in it.  I'll ride in heat all day long though, doesn't bother me.

Pretty sure one of if not my most miserable day in the saddle wasn't when I was young and stupid but actually when I was old enough to know better.  The day coming home from one of the early Maggie Valleys.  Not sure which year.  Was leaving at about oh dark thirty as the plan was to do the roughly 800 miles all in one day.  Don't remember what but apparently had something that needed to be done the next day.

Walk out that morning and two or three others are stumbling out at the same time.  Leo from Chicago and a couple others I can't remember.  A hard skim of ice is on every bike and car surface.  Had an old Garmin GPS that I'd left in the tour pak overnight that was hard drive based. It wouldn't start up; it just said screw you, call me later.  It was like 22 degrees.  There had been a really heavy fog and it was still hanging in low areas.  it was miserable.

Got geared up with the electric jacket liner and gloves, two pair of the warmest warm socks I had and the ultra uber duty long johns I'd brought "just in case", fired up the bike, the seat heater and the grip heaters and off we went.  In and out of the fog on the short stretch to I40 and it was enough to get the jeans moist so stopped and added the rain gear as a top layer.  With that it actually wasn't bad (but it had gotten a little cooler too!).

Got lined out on the highway and by the time the sun came up it was all the way up to 28 degrees.  Didn't see temps above freezing until Nashville.  About an hour west of Nashville the rain started in what was maybe 45 degree temps.  Rains anywhere from moderate to too damn hard lasted all the way home.  Another 350 miles or so.  Don't think temps ever got above 55 or so all day and it was 8:30 that night with the last two and a half hours or so in the dark cold rain when I pulled in to the house at the end of what was probably a 15 or 16 hour ride.  The day may not have reached maximum sucking potential (it was a bike ride after all); it rated way up there though  :huepfenlol2: .

Cold is the new hot.

No, it's not.  Just came in from an hour and a half doing stuff in the yard.  Have sweat dripping off places that shouldn't really have sweat dripping off places.   :-[

Now I understand.  That is exactly what my balls were.  Old hot.

Had once again just come in from a stretch outside.  I really am in idiot.  This is the genesis of "old sweaty balls syndrome."

Good grief.  I was too dumb to not look again.  It's gotten worse!!  I'm still riding somewhere for dinner later.  Wuck the feather.

Heat stroked.  Drink plenty of liquids, take an ice water bath, or watch a show on NatGeo about Antarctica in your skivvies and check weather forecasts for far northern Finland for the next 8 hours.

Riding in that is hard on the body, 10 miles feels like you did 100. We used those frogg togg cooling towels but then saw this thing from HD. Same deal, just soak it and put it on. If it works like those frogg toggs it'd be perfect.

Well Don the heat problem seems to be over. We now need pontoons for the bike. Is this really August or did I just forget to tear some pages off the calendar

Global warming gave way to global autumn early and quickly.  Stupid weather.

We ran into this Sunday just south and east of Flippin Ar. We needed life jackets and a snorke for the bike for a bit.

Not sure which day over the weekend it was now but I a little unexpectedly ran in to an almost snorkel inducing stretch too.  Damn storm wasn't big but it came up fast.  Fortunately in and out of it in 20 minutes.  There's a big difference between a nice morning with broken sun and low 70s and the same temps under dark clouds in a heavy rain.  Stupid weather.

Thinking I will still take this over the 100+ stuff. I can at least stop and eat while this blows over. Hot is there before breakfast and still there at bedtime

Boy, this waitress must have been CUTE, she made $30 from two forum members in the matter of a few hours!!! :orange:

Hearing good crispy fried chicken calling my name.  Probably going back this weekend.
