SoCal Labor Day Angelus Crest Ride.............NOT!
« on: September 06, 2011, 10:25:30 AM »

On Labor Day a gathering of Southern California motorcycles got together to ride Angeles Crest. We had motorcycles from the USA, Japan, Germany and the LAPD. There were FOUR CVO Ultras, a Red Goldwing, Champagne BMW, and a Kawasaki Police bike (Yes, it was my full dress training bike).

Many of you remember the Red Goldwing from Solvang/Buellton ridden by my neighbor John S. Michael E. is a returning rider and in the market for a bike. He's a good friend of mine so I let him use the Kawasaki. He lives in Manhattan Beach, CA. Josh P. rides the Champagne BMW, he rode with us last month to Lake Elsinore, he lives in Northern San Diego. We also met Mike T. (MAT) and his friend Andy.

When Mike pulled into the Shell station I thought it was either Andy K, or Chris E. His Ruby Red Ultra with Street Glide rear end was stunning. Andy is the sales manager at Biggs HD in San Marcos and was on a gorgeous 2007 Rootbeer / Orange Jester. He just picked it up from the dealer auction and was putting some miles on it. Kudos to both of them. Mike was fighting a cold and they both punched their way out through a thunderstorm earlier that morning.

With thunderstorms in the mountains and passes we decided to follow the advice of Horance Greeley and "Go West". We rode through Simi Valley and stopped off  at Marty’s house for a quart of oil. Andy’s Jester was “Singin’ the 110 Blues”. The bike had a leaking base gasket and was blowing oil everywhere. The engine it appears never had the “110 Fix” done to it. Back at home, Paula stay and decided to catch up on some things she needed to get done. With neither Donna or Karen to hang with, she decided to turn it into a “guys day out”.

From Simi we rode the back roads through Santa Paula, Oja,i and had lunch at the Deer Lodge. There we were greeted with a waitress who provided us full service via self-serve. If that sounds like a paradox it was. She took our order, brought us drinks and then we had to go pick it up at the BQ station. Don’t recall doing that last month, but then again we had a different waitress then.

From the Deer Lodge we broke up. Josh headed back to San Diego, and John and Michael both headed home to the South Bay for other Labor Day commitments. The four CVO Ultras pressed on!

In the more than capable hands of Marty we rode the back way to Solvang. Meandering the fields and country roads was a real pleasure. In Solvang we called Vanamal, but he must have been busy and never called back. We enjoyed a lazy afternoon in the quiet quaint faux Danish village sipping cold drinks and talking about everything else under the sun.

Andy is proving to be quite a find for the group. As sales manager at Biggs HD he is able to negotiate to make deals work in bike sales. He comes across a lot of CVOs and is willing to work with interested buyers, so keep him in mind if you are looking for any special bike.

Not wanting to fight the Labor Day traffic on the 101 through Santa Barbara we took back roads back to Simi Valley. We had dinner at The Hat. a local shop famous for its pastrami sandwiches. From there Marty took us to the 118 freeway before peeling off for home. I separated from Mike and Andy at the 405 and headed back home to the South Bay .

All in all it was a really fun day. If you are wondering why this ride report is verbose and seems to go on forever, it’s because there are no pictures. With no back seat riders, we lacked our usual bevy of lovely photographers so I had to fill this ride report with something.

Here is the lone photo I snapped with my cell phone.

What started to be a routine ride, kept taking turns

Weather was kinda crazy, T-storms, rain, lighting  :nixweiss:

Our friends from the high desert were kinda trapped at home. I don't like to lead (as most know) but duty called so I was assigned the lead  :huepfenlol2:

These guys wanted to see the back way to Ojai, ok, then we were sitting at Dear lodge and they wanted to ride futher North, ok, somebody said Solvang and it was a go  :2vrolijk_21: now here's what got me, "let's ride back the sameway to stay away from Hwy 101(Traffic on a holiday or any weekend) :nixweiss:, ok !!!

I left my home at 9:00 am, I got home at 9:00 pm (3:00 am came quick)

All and all, thanks for the ride, I enjoyed meeting a few new people and spending time with friends  :2vrolijk_21:

Well done you guys, hope to make the next one. Here in Elsinore it rained on and off all day but it was nice to have the cloud cover.  Doc

Mark, it sounds like you had a great day.  Sorry I missed it.  Spent a couple of hours helping Joan get used to her new ride. She completed the safety class and will pick up her M1 this week.  Hope to see you soon.

Marty,

I sure do appreciate you taking the lead. If this ride was in the South Bay or along the coast I would have done it, but I just don't know the Simi Valley back way to Solvang route. I would have been totally dependant on what the GPS tells me and that may not have been a nice route.

I got home about 9:45pm. A long day for me too, but totally worth it.

Mark , Thanks goes to you for organizing this ride, it was a great day of riding for sure.    :2vrolijk_21:

Marty, Thank you very much for leading us all on a terrific day of riding, I don't see why you don't like leading because you did an awesome job, I only hope in my future to be able to take on that task and do as well as you, till then I have no problem being the " Caboose captain " in our near future SoCal outings !    ;D

After committing to go on the ride on Friday I came down with the whole scratchy sore throat thing which lead to a full on head cold, having my doubts on Sunday evening about still attending, I awoke at 5:30 Monday morning  to full on rain and thunder cracking, now really having my doubts.   :confused5:  :nixweiss:
Some how I pressed on and met Andy( SMGR- Biggs HD) at 7:00, he came up from Vista, after topping off we headed north in rain gear, which ended up being a great "sunny" day of riding.    :huepfenjump3:

I ended up getting back home at 11:30pm with just over 500 miles logged, and Andy pressing on to Vista, I sure am glad I found the courage to honor my commitment because I had one hell of a day of riding and fun with new and old friends.

Thanks again and look forward to the next time.

This helps explain why I could not fine you. I got to the gas station at 10:20 but saw no Harley group. I left up route 2. Made it only a little bit then got stopped by police and given a ticket for "failure to yeild". Police startled me so much I nearly laid my bike down when I stopped. Caught just in time.

Cop wrote ticket and I still headed up 2 to find Harley group at photo oppertunities. After 10 miles turned around and went home. Cop was writing someone else when I past him.

Rumor is, the ride costed me about $350.

Pedro,

Sorry we missed each other. When you arrived at 10:20am you must have just missed us. Although we try and keep to our posted "kick stands up" start times, we usually wait a few extra mins for guys like Panhead Jimmy or Vanamal. We decided NOT to ride The Crest due to the weather forecast of thunder showers. It was a last moment parking lot decision to head west. Next time we'll PM each other our cell phones ahead of time so we can talk/text about any last moment changes.

Total bummer about the ticket. When we were gassing up a cyclist told us that the police were out in full force up there.

Andy rides mainly demo's from the dealership, the 07' CVO he was riding he just picked up from an auction for the dealership.

now that makes sense, road test the preowned bikes they purchase at auction. his old ultra had something like 97K on it when he sold it.

It's far better he find out that Jester was not fixed then the next customer who buys it. This way he can get it all squared away properly for the showroom floor.
