Title: Need opinions on fairing lowers paint scheme
Post by: mrambo4 on October 15, 2019, 04:20:09 AM
Okay need help making a decision, or atleast see if I’m on the right track.

All ready ordered all the parts to put speakers and amp in fairing lowers on my 2018 CVO Road Glide.  But since Harley doesn’t offer them painted, I am having a expert paint them, yes Joe that’s you.

But my question is, do I go two tone or sold Dark Alloy?

I like the 2 tone, but also see the lines of the bike and think HD has the scheme so the Lava Orange comes from the top of the fairing down the tank, across the back of the seat and down.  So the fairing lowers should be Dark Alloy.

@Puzzled what would of you done on this build of yours, if you would of put lowers on it??

Thoughts please.

And yes I’m still a Jr. after 5 years, just don’t post or comment much.  LOL.

I'd go with the solid of the darker color.

I also agree with the dark all the way on the lowers.

In past years when someone added lowers to, as an example a '09 CVO Road Glide, they painted the lowers with the same paint design as the total bike and to me, not to them, it is redundant and looks slightly out of place.  Although still good, if you know what I mean.

I've been toying with added them and when I do, they'll be total vivid black to match the lower portion of the orange/black paint scheme.

By painting the lowers the full on upper/lower colors, to me it distracts from the flow of the top to bottom colors and takes your eyes to the lower fairings instead of the total picture.

It's hard to explain, but that's my thought process.

Your bike looks awesome by the way!

I agree Dan. On my 09 I got them black. they looked great that color. I also had to buy a different bracket and change the angle of the fairing so the lowers would fit.

One more vote for solid Dark Gray Alloy. I think it would fit best with your awesome paint scheme and I personally think that the lowers should blend rather than stand out.

Stick with solid, my SEEG has a small amount of orange on them but it follows the pattern on the tank

i guess i'm gonna be the lone holdout.  my bike was the 2013, same as the one you showed of puzzled, except in the burnt emerald/roman gold paint color.  when i got lowers, i was facing the same dilemma, should i go with the stock hd color (in this case, burnt emerald) or go with joe's pattern  (mine weren't the first he'd done, and he showed me pics before hand).  obviously, i decided to go with the overall theme, and i think they turned out fantastic.

so i say, go with the themed.  i don't think they detract from the rest of the bike at all, and at least they aren't boring   :2vrolijk_21:

Dan sorry that’s Puzzled’s old bike, I put it on there for an example and wanted his comment on what he would of done with this one,   But a agree with both, the color should not take away from the total scheme and Puzzled’s bike and bikes are AWESOME.

Skratch,
I agree with this on your scheme, because your fender has the 2 tones, on the 18,most if not all of them had the fenders in the base color, somewhat causing the 2 tone on the lowers to look out of place.   My wife is telling me to go 2 tone, but I keep leaning at a single color.  Have to make up my mind soon, the speaker pods are in and the lowers should be here soon.  And Joe isn’t gonna wait forever on me LOL.

My bike and you see what I mean about the solid fender and the flow of the lava orange.

Each color scheme has it's own unique design and on the '09 SERG, the strip on the front fender, tank, side panels and bags all flows from top to bottom and rearward.

On the '09 I do believe that schemed painted lowers can be redundant and not flow as nicely.  But on some other schemes, the strips are more parallel with the ground and may allow more color to be added.  Back in the day, '09 that is, there were many guys here go the lower and tourpak routes.  Some had the full on design painted on both and some went solo with just a solid color.  They all look good, just different and to each or their taste's.

I had often thought of having the design painted on the tourpak, but it's in the all orange zone and in my opinion only, gets a bit too busy, possibly distracting from the overall look of the bike.

Obviously everyone has an opinion and some agree and some are loners, but each is entitled to their opinion, mine included...  ;D

okay, i went back and re-read your first post.  since it had been a few days since, i had forgotten the part about '2018 cvo road glide in dark alloy'.  pulling up pics of that color scheme, i am going to amend my earlier recommendation of the themed paint job on the lowers and will agree with everyone else on the solid color on the lowers.  i do agree that it will look 'out of place' if you go with two toned down that low when everything else in that area is solid.  sorry for the confusion, i just had that picture of puzzled's bike in my head and got fixated on that....

what does joe recommend?

Joes always swamped making us all happy, he has pictures of a unit he did with the lowers 2 tone, I like it but not sold.   Since it’s not my bike I don’t want to post the full build, but here are the lowers.

The solid would look fine but that two tone that Joe did sure looks sweet... :2vrolijk_21:

Good luck with your decision and please post some pictures once your project is complete.

I'd go with the solid of the darker color.

X2, I think it will blend in better with the fender and bottom of the bike.

x3  I think it will look best in the solid colour as well.

Good luck with making the right decision for you.

Yes, Joe Z always knows best (cast my vote for 2-tone...even more so with a custom 19/21” fender)

Would love to do a 21” wrapped fender and have Joe make it special and then do something with the lowers.  But the wife keeps saying do you ever want to retire.  LOL.

Hopefully if the guy is a forum member they don’t get upset me posting this pic.  This is why I’m torn, love the extra coloring, but still keep looking at the lines

When every piece on bike has the 2 tone paint I would do 2 tone on the lowers. I think it makes it look more custom.
I have thought about sending my lowers out for 2 tone to match the rest if my bike

Its going to look good either way

I would think that the solid gray would cost quite a bit less and work really well. Both look good, question is, which do you like best??

when i got mine done, the solid would have cost less than the 3 tone.  but with such a small piece, it really wasn't that much to worry about where it made one made much more sense.  the 3 tone would have cost $300 more to paint.

IMO the MoCo cheapened out on the front fender... all the other sheet metal (other than the lowers which I'm understanding from this post were done after) all include the orange (or whatever that lighter color is)... the front fender should have had some of the orange on it too.

Well damn, that does look good but I see what you mean about the extra lines. We need Cam to photoshop those a solid color and then repost it so we can see them side by side.

mrambo4 that RG looks good with the 2 tone to me because it makes up for the 1 tone fender. I agree every paint scheme has it's own features. Some may look good 2 tone some not. I have tossed the idea of putting some color on my lowers.
