It can happen to any of us at any given time in this sport we love.  My prayers are lifted to the Great Physician in that Roger will have a full, healthy recovery and for his family during this time.  God can do all things.

Is anyone local collecting restaurant cards or food delivery service certificates or other time saving convenience stuff the family can use up while waiting through this?

The accident happened when Roger was touring in Utah. Just north of Boulder, UT a Toyota 4Rnner turned into him and knocked him off the road. He’s in a hospital in St. George, UT. Melanie (SGChick) is with him now along with Rogers daughter. So as of now there’s no need for that. Melanie’s son is looking after their dogs in NorCal while she is away.

Roger still has not regained consciousness, but his vital signs are improving. He’s off life support, but is still in ICU. Once the docs are satisfied with the level if his recovery, they will operate on the compound fracture of his left femur.

Our bodies should not be so frail compared to the elements we so enjoy.  Doesn't seem fair sometimes.  Like "fair" has anything to do with it.  Godspeed (everyone).

Boulder, Ut......Hwy. 12.......that's Escalante Staircase.  An incredable ride under normal circumstances.  Mel and I messaged back and forth this morning.  Prayers up for Roger and a complete recovery.

Anyone have an update on Roger?

He still has not regained consciousnesses. Yesterday they set the compound fracture of his left femur. They had been waiting for all his vitals to stabilize and be strong enough to withstand the operation. Hopefully today they will do an MRI scan of his brain to determine why he still has not come too. He has however, shown responsiveness to touch.

Keep the prayers coming.

Folks your prayers are working.

Roger is back in NorCal and I visited him today. His eyes were open and he was smiling when he saw me. His sister says he has regained a low level of consciousness, enough to recognize people and voices. I do believe he knew who I was, and understood what I was saying. He grinned when I called him TrapperDog, and myself Ironhorse.

I squeezed his hands and he squeezed back. I asked him to "squeeze the clutch", and although he squeezed the "brake" I am sure he understood what I meant. He leaned closer into me when I spoke, which I thought was excellent since he had a neck immobilizer on.

I asked him to blink as I read off a list of popular book titles. He blinked at "Of Mice and Men". I told him I would read him a little bit every time I visited. His sister said keeping him engaged with reading was helpful as it stimulated brain activity.

That's all I have for now folks.

Well Yesterday Suzy & I went to see Roger meet will Melanie in the hallway, so she could fill us in. Boy! this breaks my heart He did I believe know that we were there, Suzanne hold his hand, and I spoke to him joking as we always did. He would lift the corner of his lip as if he was laughing, He would squeeze Suzy's hand, he can't speak and Mel told us they were moving him to a rebab Tuesday. Lets keep praying Roger has such a long way to go! Mel said that Mark was coming in later to see him, maybe Mark has more will wait to see how his visit went.

I went to see Roger again on Saturday and Monday.

His improvements are small but definite. He is becoming aware of being uncomfortable and we did the best we could to make him comfortable. He is moving his legs a little. He is making great effort to talk. He is moving his lips and breath is coming out of his mouth. However, with the tracheotomy in place we can't make out what he is saying. Hopefully when the tracheotomy is removed we will be able to hear him.

Today or tomorrow they will move him to a rehabilitation facility that is better suited to his needs. Once he is in place there I will let you all know. Then you can PM me for the address if you would like to send cards, letters, and flowers.

I truly feel for Roger, I just got out of rehab after two months there and two weeks in ICU. Me on motorcycle versus car, car won. I will say a prayer for Roger, I am convinced that helped me along as many people were praying for me. Feel better.

Just found out Trapper dog AKA Roger Lane has been in a terrible accident and is in the Hospital for Broken femur, broken clavicle, broken ribs, and more. Please say a prayer for him and Melanie who is with him.

OMG. My worst fear came true.

I first met Roger with my husband when we attended a motorcycle riding competition. Roger was police trained in motorcycle riding,  and practiced so much. He always encouraged my husband to practice. If this can happen to a Roger, it can happen to anyone.

I had not received replies from Roger in some time, so I feared the worst. I started googling for him, and this came up. I feel like I want to throw up.

Does this make anyone else want to get out of riding? Seriously, if this can happen to him, we are all vulnerable.  :-\

Roger has been moved again. He is now in a facility in Sacramento that can better manage his needs. The goal is to get him well enough to come back to the Bay Area. I plan on going out to see him on Monday. Send me a PM, or reply with your full name and I will tell Roger you said hello.

Once I meet with the staff and get their okay, I will make his address available to those who wish to send him a card.

Hey everyone,

I visited Roger yesterday at the new facility.  If you would like to send him a card or letter, please send me a PM and i will give it to you.

He shares a room and it’s kind of small. So if you send him personal items, pillows, beanie caps, socks, CDs, label the item with his name with a Sharpie.  That way when it won’t get lost or mixed up with another patient’s clothing when it’s sent out in the laundry. He is still on a trach and a feeding tube, so treats, sweets and edibles are not recommended at this time. If you have any photos of both of you together, please feel free to send those. They are great for working his memory.

I stopped by and visited him on Thursday at the care facility he's at in Sacramento.  This was my first visit but per Mark (Ironhorse) he's made a lot of improvement even over the past month or so.  He is alert and can communicate some but is hard to understand with the tracheotomy he has. I could tell he knew what I was saying and would respond to questions and even pictures I showed him which always seemed to light up his countenance.

He still has a long road of recovery ahead but lots of positive signs so keep the thoughts and prayers coming.

I visited Roger yesterday and am pleased to report he is making good strides.

I would say his improvement since the last time I saw him was exponential. He is now able to pull his left leg up. He only assists with his right arm to bring it in the last few inches. Other than that he can bend his knee and raise it up. He has pretty good strength in that leg too. I gave him a foot massage and he has good strength in the foot and ankle. He can move it in all directions. His left arm has improved too. While his grip is still not strong we played a good session of tug of war. He can pull and push with good strength. He just needs to strengthen the ability to raise and lower it.

Best of all, he’s starting on semi-solid food. He ate some applesauce without any problem. He also started sipping small amounts of water out of a cup on his own. All of this while the capped trach is still in place. The plan is to transition him to more semi-solid food and get him off the stomach tube. Once that happens he will start bulking up and getting stronger.

Roger’s thoughts can still be clouded, but he grasps the contexts of past, present and future. His short-term memory is still weak, as I had to remind him of Chuck and Marty’s visit. I told him of all the folks that are praying for him and pulling for him. This Thanksgiving Roger will spend it with his son Jake, daughter in law Rachel and grand daughter who are visiting from Texas. It is hoped he can have some soft, or mashed turkey day food!

OMG, I haven't been on the CVO site in I don't know how long and this is like the 3rd post I read.
Roger & Melanie, you will be in our daily prayers from Trudy & I.  We often talk about you two and others and the great times we had with Nor Cal CVO when we lived in CA.

I spent 3 days the beginning of Oct in ICU with a DVT & PE.  All I can say is,  Roger, I hope you continue to have the same great care as I received during my short stay.  I cannot say enough good things about the ICU Dr's & Nurses.

We wish you a complete recovery and wishfully hope our paths will cross again one day.

Mark, thank you for the updates, I sent you a PM.

Bill(SklyWag) & Trudy(Broomie)

Layla,

I visited Roger yesterday. He's doing better, although he had a slight set back. He's back in the hospital due to a fall. Melanie said he tried to get up out of his wheelchair on his own and unattended. He bruised his left hip and incurred a slight brain bleed. A follow up CT scan showed the bleeding has stopped.

The good news is that they have removed the trach and his throat is closing up nicely. His voice sounds normal when he speaks. Roger is quite fidgety, and busy. He was constantly undoing the straps that secure him in his chair and kept wanting to get up. I spent most of my visit securing the belts as fast as he was undoing them. In bed he kept swinging his legs over the edge trying to get up. In the chair he kept trying to stand. The staff said if he continued like this they would put "mittens" on his hands so he couldn't undo the belts.

He is still on semi solid food. His meals consist of pureed meals and thickened water and juice. He still has a stomach tube to supplement his caloric intake. We were encouraging him to eat more as he has lost a lot of weight. However Roger was not interested in food, and was really focused on trying to get up.

His long term memory is good in some areas as he knew my name and recognized me. He also knew that he was in Sacramento. However we kept having to remind him that he was in an accident and was recovering. There is some short term confusion as he kept mistaking the closet for a bathroom even though we showed him several times.

Now that the trach is out and he is no longer tethered to oxygen Melanie will again request for a transfer back closer to her. I plan on visiting Roger again next weekend. It is hoped they will have allowed him to be moved, and he will be closer.

Roger has been moved to a facility in Santa Clara, closer home! I plan on visiting him today and will give you an update.

I saw Roger yesterday, he's been moved to a closer facility.

They are working him hard, at least 4 hrs of rehab daily. The goal is to get him to where he can be more self sufficient, then maybe move him back home within a month. They have him up and walking with a walker, (supported of course). The TBI has left him somewhat "uncooperative", so that's an issue too.

He was exhausted and slept hard for the two hours I was there. He even slept through his meeting with the PM nurse. He is off all monitoring connections except for the gizmo that clamps on his finger and reads oxygen. He's still on semi-solid food too. I was hoping to bring him french fries to fatten him up, maybe soon. I plan on visiting again him today. Hopefully he will be awake.

If you want an address to mail him cards and letters, please send me a PM.

If Roger would be up for a visitor he doesn’t know terribly well, we would happily go visit him.
Has the doctors grim prognosis improved given Roger’s apparent progress?

Layla,

You and everyone else are welcome to visit Roger. Just reach out to Melanie ahead of time and let her know when you are thinking of coming. Roger may have tests, rehab, physical therapy or examinations going on.

I visited Roger yesterday, and the good news is he is back on solid foods! They have taken the feed tube out of his stomach. His drinks are no longer thickened to prevent swallowing problems. When I think of how I first saw him post accident, and how he is now I see a miracle. He has come so far and works very hard, and it shows.

He's up early every day and does about 4 hours of physical therapy and occupational therapy. They work on standing, walking, transferring from the bed to the wheelchair, using a walker and all sorts of strength exercises. There are exercises for muscle building and hand eye coordination, which is still excellent. By the time they get him back in the bed about 2pm he is exhausted and sleeps hard till 4pm or 5pm. Then he is up and has dinner.

During my visits I work with him to challenge the weaker parts of his body, and reawaken various parts of his brain. When we "stroll" the hallways in his wheelchair I have him to use his left hand and arm to pull himself on the wall railings. Yesterday I asked him what his favorite movies were, and then tried to get him to tell me the story line. I spoke to him in Spanish and his eyes lit up. We had a good conversation in Spanish. It really impressed the Latina nurses and I asked them to speak to him in Spanish from time to time.

When dinner came I watched Roger feed himself, and I almost cried with joy. The only thing I helped him with was opening the vacuum sealed fruit cup as his left hand could not grasp the cup firmly. But his right hand  was able to lift the flap and slowly peel it back. He was able to break the food up into bite sized portions and use a spoon to eat.

And the comical Roger still comes out. I said, "Roger, finish this sentence: You can lead a horse to water,..." He sat there for a moment than said "But you can't make him pee", I busted out laughing and he smiled.

Mel texted me last night saying that he is improving a little each day, but he still has much confusion.
He has a long way to go, but knowing Roger, He'll fight tooth and nail to get back.
Still sending prayers for Roger and his family, and his dog.

I visited Roger yesterday and brought him a slice of CostCo Pepperoni pizza. He enjoyed eating it. He even cut it up into bite sized pieces. He told me that the next time I come to bring him something chocolate. I'm thinking a slice of cheese cake!

Melanie was there and told me she finally managed to unlock Rogers iPhone. She said she often calls him on FaceTime, and texts with him. This speaks to me of excellent recovery as the act of holding the phone, opening the text app, composing a message, typing in the letters by hand, reviewing the message, and then sending it all calls for different complex brain functions. This is something we all struggle with daily on our phones and Roger is doing it!

So, if you have Roger's number, (it has not changed), please feel free to text, or FaceTime him. I suggest FaceTime instead of a call at it will literally put a face to name.

You are absolutely correct as this is excellent news indeed!  As to the other statement in red, Dear Lord, I am a mess at it and I did not have Roger's accident!

Great idea on the call!

Thanks again.

Hey folks, here’s an update on Roger.

He’s in Bakersfield and now lives in his own apartment. They sent him down there at the end of March as this location was better for people with Traumatic Brain Injury. The down side is that he is now much further from Melanie, and with the virus lock down visiting is restricted. The up side is that he has become more self sufficient and is able to get up and dress himself. He gets 5 hours of PT/OT 6 days a week. He can now get out of bed alone and transfer himself from a wheelchair to a regular chair. Melanie was relieved that he does not spend his days either in bed or a wheelchair. The TBI has left the irascible Roger combative and confused. This is common for folks with his level of brain injury. He constantly calls or texts her although they don’t always make sense. Because of the lock down he is not permitted visitors, however once it is lifted, I plan on visiting him. If you would like his phone or mailing address, please PM me.

Layla,

Roger is still in Bakersfield. I haven't had a chance to visit him as all care facilities are off limits due to the virus. Melanie said he's made a few gains, but has leveled off. His phone got run through the wash, and she is working on getting him a replacement.

I really don't have anything else to report.

Thank you for the update. As much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news, I am guessing that Roger's riding days are over. It just sounds like he is not in a condition yet to get back on the bike.  :'(

I really don’t know. Due to the Covid restrictions I was unable to visit him while he was in Bakersfield. I’m on my Afghanistan deployment now and got word from Melanie that he moved. I’ll visit him when I get back. If I had to guess I’d say his recovery leveled off to where they felt it was the time to move him.

I wish I could tell you more.

I got word from Melanie that Roger has been moved to Modesto, Ca. He's now in a semi private home, Still not able to have visitors because of Co-vid they have made acceptions for her to visit. If you happen to have his cell number he would like text messages. Be aware that some of his answers are a little weird, he gets confused!

New update on Roger, I spoke with Melanie the other day Roger has been moved again to daily City just outside San Francisco bay area, sorry to say not much change in his condition. Melanie retired last year and has moved to there home in the Sonora hill's which would have been great for her, but then they moved him 2 1/2 hrs. away. He can recieve calls, and at times does good just speak slowly and clearly. His cell # is 650-823-8868.

GoldWing John and I rode out to visit Roger on Friday June 26th. Roger is at his new facility in Jamestown at the base of the California Sierras. He’s been there since early June.

As with the rest of us Covid made things difficult for Roger. Due to heightened non-contact rules in care facilities Roger missed out on much needed physical therapy.  His gains were set back a little. It is hoped he will recover and strengthen enough to where Melanie can bring him home to their house in neighboring Soulsbyville. While we were there Roger was quite alert. John and I brought him a breakfast burrito and coffee. Melanie fed him and he devoured it with gusto. Later John worked with Roger on eye hand coordination by tossing a ballon and letting Roger bat it with a paddle. He did rather well!

Roger speaks in random access phrases. He greeted us with a warm “Good to see you, thanks for coming”. He remembered my wife Denise, but associated her with an unrelated past action.  I wasn’t sure he knew who we were, as I hadn’t visited in well over a year. However when it was time to leave I kissed his forehead and said “I love you, Roger Lane”. He replied in a warm but mocking tione, “I love you Mark Paz”. That really brought it home. He’s still Roger.

I have photos of the visit but out of privacy and respect won’t post them. If you’d like to see them please PM me your email address. Please don’t post them on the internet. I know Andy has been out to visit him.

If you’d like to visit him, please check with Melanie first.

I visited Roger Lane yesterday and am please to report he's doing well.

This facility really gives him good care and attention. I brought burritos and chips and we had lunch together.  I also brought two sets of large bath towels, per Melanie's suggestion.  I made sure to mark them with his name with a Sharpie so they don't get mixed up in the laundry.  After lunch we played Black Jack, and I think I broke even with him.  His ability to do calculations in his head amazed me.  I was looking at my cards and counting on my fingers, and he knew when to hold and when to hit.  Later we talked about bikes and I told him mine was at Metal Dragon getting a top end job.  He totally understood jugs, pistons, headwork, gaskets and we had a good in depth conversation about it.  He remembered me by name, and even remembered my wife Denise, and she hasn't seen him in a while.

During lunch one of the caregivers brought him his meds and she and I chatted.  She says he tends to be grumpy in the morning till he gets his coffee.  She said one morning they caught his UP AND WALKING in the hallway holding the railing!  So they brought him a walker/seat on wheels thing for him, just to guard against falling.

He requested I bring pizza the next time I visit.

Nice update report Mark.  How is he doing weight wise......up, down?  Does he get plenty of exercise.....are you able to go for a walk for a few blocks?

Did you show him that fb post from when I filmed you two at the motorcycle rodeo years ago?

JC,

He's still pretty thin, that's why Melanie doesn't mind when I bring him "Junk Food". He's not ready to walk alone, he's still in a wheel chair.  Maybe next time I'll see if he can go around with me on his walker, but that's really the caregivers call, not mine.

His facility is on the side of a mountain so they don't have good cell and data reception. Maybe it's a Verizon thing.  Anyway I couldn't show him the video.  Last time I was there I called ErnieZap so he could chat with Roger and the connection was weak.

I never met the man personally, I've heard nothing but great things about him from other fine gentleman.

I've been getting requests for an update.  Melanie says Rogers wish was NOT to have a memorial service.  You can send cards of flowers to the house.  In lieu of cards or flowers you can make a donation to a local animal shelter in Rogers name.  Roger loved his pets.

If you would like the home address please send me a PM.
