Title: Replacement tires for screaming eagle electra glide
Post by: harleydawg57 on April 14, 2008, 05:32:06 PM

 ???
Was wondering what tire everyone uses as replacement tires on the screaming eagle baggers?
I am not real proud of Dunlops right now.

Never personally had any problems with Dunlops, but Harley now recognizes Michelin and advertises them online in their parts section.  Had Michelins on an '85 BMW bagger and they were great.

I put the Michelin Commander's on my SEEG last fall.  They're awesome!  Much more quiet, better riding and better handling tire than the OEM Dunlops.  I give 'em a big "thumbs up!" :2vrolijk_21:

I'm running the Dunlop E3's and really like them and I'm getting great wear as well.  Brian, have you tried the E3's and if so, how do they compare to the Michelins?

Metzler 880's  :2vrolijk_21:

Duane

Why the 880's?
Better wear?
Better traction?
Better mileage?
Better rain handling?

I'm looking for something different for the SERG!

a) Why the 880's?
b) Better wear?
c) Better traction?
d) Better mileage?
E) Better rain handling?

a) Heard enough "bad" about the Dunlops and enough "good" about the Metz that I thought I would give it a try.
Two of the guys that actually ride at my local dealer swear by them. One has even been chastised by the owner for recommending the M's over the HD branded Dunlops.

b) probably not, they seem a little softer

c) Traction seems better

d) see "b"

e) definitely better in the rain.

Other improvement I noticed is on grooved pavement where the grooves are running parallel to the the roadway, much less "wandering"

Overall I am satisfied.

My Dunlops gave me 15K before I changed them, still had decent tread on them, but they were starting to crack.

Everything Duane said about the 880's for me and I like the look of the tread pattern better.  You just have to run more air air the 880's..  42-44 front and 48-50 rear.

Are they priced comparable to the Dunlops?

Only have ~2k (due to winter & wx) on the new Michelins, but while putting on these first couple thou I've pushed the Ultra hard in the Mountains and the Dragon's Tail; and have to say they are the finest tires I've ever installed on a Touring rig!  Super smooth on the freeways, and in the hills it's like riding a rail.  Run the pressures higher than normal at the advise of a respected tech, and they look great at this point.

IMO, they'll handle anything an Ultra/CVO can throw at them.

Got 13,500 miles out of original rear Dunlop. Running Dunlop E3 now and
very happy with wear and traction. Also the load rating is high enough
for the touring bikes. I load mine down occasionally and don't want to
have to worry about tire failure.

IMHO,
I have been running Metzlers nearly since they came out back in about 1988 I moved to Seattle and with the rain the Metzlers were much more sticky for my daily commute as I had no cage at the time. Now the 880's are again IMHO even better. Albeit Dunlop has made very good progress I have +50K miles on Metzlers with many differet scoots and I would be hard pressed to switch.

Avon Venom on the SEEG. First time I have had Avon's. They were on the Bike when I purchased. So far I like the grip and they don't follow grooved pavement.

06 FLTRI I am running Metzeler's ME880's really like the performance. They just introduced MU85 so I will be heading to Sedona with the MU85 instead of 140.

I also switched to DYNA Beads for balancing. Seems better.

I purchased 2 sets of ME880's from a seller on Ebay (brns49).  His store on Ebay is Aloha Power Sports here in Ohio.

Right now he has 130/90-16 blackwall fronts for $119.95 with free shipping. Item # 250235994177.

140/19-16 blackwall rear for $159.95 with free shipping.  Item# 270227947744.

Give him the sizes you want and he will sell you a pair for a little less money.  Don't know how this compares to the Dunlop price.

Chip,

I just had a Metzeler MU85 rear put on the 06 yesterday at a local motorcycle tire store, $145 and some change plus $40 install.

I tried the orange tire paint the MoCo offers, but it was a pain in the butt to apply w/tire on wheel/bike. I know somebody that has them on there :pumpkin: though. ;)

With the wet climate here, Dunlops=Teflon. On my Sporty & Fatboy I swapped out the OEM for Avon Venoms; they were perfect for those bikes, inspiring confidence with cornering & raised surfaces in the wet. However, I now have a 2006 SE-UC. It was running on Dunlops for the first 7wks of my ownership, but dropped it down to my local Indy mechanic (who has always worked on my bikes) for a set of Venoms. The bike suddenly started handling like *hit!!  - speed wobbles over 60mph & starting to tank-slap :o by 75mph (on the straight!!). I took it back to him the following day; he rebalanced the wheels...better, but still worrying at anything over 65mph. The Dunlops let me cruise along rock solid at 90mph (in the dry) without a hint of a wobble. Anyone experienced this before??

[mechanic says he will order a new set of tyres for me if I want to try another set of Avons - not sure if its worth trying!]  :-\

Thats good to hear, I've got a set of the Michelins in the geerage waitin to go on soon.  The EIII's have done good on mileage but the traction seemed to go away after about 5K miles (I'm at 10K now).  Local dealer had 15% off on carry out tires, so I carried me out a set for only about $20 more than I paid for a set of EIII's.
