Title: 2023 CVO Road Glide
Post by: FLSTFI Dave on September 07, 2023, 09:00:15 AM
Last Thursday I traded my Red Pepper CVO RG for the Whiskey Neat CVO RG.  I have 685 miles on the bike so far.  The new body work looks nice, the tank has several subtle changes, its more angular.  The new fairing is nice, the glove boxes are very deep now.  Gunslinger did a good job on the paint

The new VVT motor is very nice in my opinion.  It's torque curve comes on very early and stays high until red line, its a very flat curve.  It has noticeably more power than the 117.  I think its power is closer to the 131 kit if you use all HD parts.  In my opinion, the motor is the biggest improvement.  I would say the brakes are a good improvement also.  They have more stopping power, especially the front.  The Front suspension is an improvement also.  I think the Front should be a little firmer, as it has a lot of brake dive.  This could be because the brakes are better.  The front end doers feel very good in the curves.  The rear in my opinion is a slight, very slight improvement.  It still a bit harsh or jarring on big bumps.  Its rather firm like a sports car.  Overall I really like the biker, but front suspension could be a bit firmer and the rear a bit more compliant.  The ride modes are nice, you can feel a difference in throttle response between the three, rain, tour and sport.  The modes also effect how the abs and traction control come on.

The IFCU (infotainment control unit) is very sharp and clear.  Seems to be easy to see in all lighting.  You have three layout you are able to choose from, Sport, Tour and cruise.  The Rockford Fosgate is like the previous years system, and better than its predecessor.  The IFCU is fairly easy to navigate and use.  The owners manual is not all that good.  Best bet is to sit with a beer and go though all the menus.  There are bugs in it, for example when it reads back a text it doesn't mute the stereo.

Stock windshield does not work at all.  Looks great but doesn't work at all.

Harley recommends the 12"for 5'9"and taller.  I put that one on, and it works fantastic.  No buffeting at all, but its a little tall in my opinion.  I probably could have used the 10"

Wow fantastic, congrats on the new scooter.

Does that color really pop in the sun? I haven't been able to see one in person yet.

Ok so besides the windshield what will be the first mod?

Yes, he did buy the same bike.

There have been a few around here.  Pigeon Forge Store and Kodak store each had one.

The more I ride it, the more I like it.  The motor just feels nice.

Yes, this color really pops in the sun, looks fantastic.

So windshield was first.  Next will be plate frame, its already on order.  Then a rider back rest.

Congrats on the beautiful bike.

I'm looking forward to a new bike late winter or early spring.  I'm wondering if the new ones accept the  seats/backrests from previous models?

Dave from what I read I see you really like high-performance motors.

So my question is will that 121 satisfy you? Or do you not know yet?

Yes, performance motors are lots of fun.   I honestly cant answer that yet.  I really like the performance of this motor so far. More power would be nice, but the VVT is new to Harley so I do not want to void the warranty.  I did on my 19 at a year old but by then I knew the issues with the motor.  This motor feels good, pulls well.  Time will tell.

Congrats Dave and Puzzled. First, your pics are the best I have seen for highlighting the color of the WN.
Like others, especially on FB, I am on the fence. I have the 22 Wicked Orange, but always am interested in the new stuff. My question is, given the lighter weight, front shock change, how does it handle compared to your 19 (which I also had). Is it a little better/different or a major difference. Going from my 22 to this years is a pretty big jump in $$. I realize it is a subjective question, just looking for some real world input.

Thanks, Ted

Joe and I were talking about this the other day.  We have hear no talk of it.  Strange as they already have all the required parts.  They have the cylinders, the pistons, the intake and injectors bigger air cleaner for a 135 Kit.  All they need is a cam.

Seems to me they should be offering a 135 kit.

At 75k miles on the clock, he's going to do a compression leak down on it this morning.  Then we'll decide the plan of action once that's done.  If it's an upper end then he'll also check the crank run out.  In worse case scenario, I'll be catching a plane back to Tucson......otherwise, I'll be riding home, leaving in the next day or so if it's just another 10k service.

I would think a 135 kit should be available soon.  The 121 has the same crank as the 135 motor.  So Harley already has the pistons and the cylinders.  They also have the bigger throttle body and injectors.  So it wouldn't be much effort for Harley to come out with the kit.

Went to Black Widow HD yesterday and finally got a look at the 23 CVO in Gray/Silver.  Nice looking bike.  I believe it would have looked better without the bubbled rear bags.  Anyway, I had my looksee.  Now it will probably be another two or three years before I am in a dealership again just like this time.  The experience has not changed.  Had a salesman on my hip the minute I walked into the door up until the time I left.  Could not even browse around in peace.

Call and talk to George.  He owns the company. He is currently making a riders back rest for the 23 CVO seats.

Here is a pictuere of the Bad Boyz Cyclez Backrest installed on my bike.  It is height adjustable, you have adjustment for and aft and it fold forward so a passenger can get on.  I think it looks good.  However I am now thinking of having him add gel and recover my seat.

Dave....beautiful bike. I just bought a 2023 CVO Street Glide in the Dark Platinum. Getting ready to change the windshield, read where you said thought the 10 inch, might have worked but you bought the 12. Are you getting anything with the 12 inch as far as wind behind it? Im 5'10, but I would rather look over than through, and dont mind a little air as long as their is no buffeting.
Thought I would ask....but as par for the course Ill probably end up with one of each. lol

He's got a Shark, not a batwing. Big difference when you're talking windshield heights.

I get zero buffeting with the 12".  Almost no wind at all getting to me.  The 10" and 12" for the road glide have very different angle and heights.  Have no clue how one is 12" and the other 10", they have to be 6 inch or more difference in height.

Can't answer on the street glide, way different fairings and windshields.  Congratulations on the new bike.

So what's your thoughts on your new Road Glide compared to a Street Glide?  I wish dealers had shields this bike you could Demo.  With your height, I'm thinking the 10" would be good for you and the 12" a bit tall.  Its borderline to tall for me and I'm 6'

I'm almost embarrassed to post this but.......having ridden Harleys since the 90's, when you had to go through the lottery to get one. I was blown away.
Only rode the Road Glide at the suggestion of a friend, went in the dealership to buy another CVO Street Glide. Have always rode Batwing faring bikes, have owned multiple. Dealer said let's take both out for a ride. I got on the Road Glide first, I wanted to get off my 15 CVO Street Glide and get right on the 2023 CVO Road Glide to compare the feeling. At first I wasn't trusting what I felt, the RG was easier to pick up off the side stand than my SG..ok thats weird... but nice. When we started out of the dealership the RG seemed better balanced than my SG, we went through a section of 30-40 mph turns before we hit the main street and the bike seemed to turn so good at even slower speeds. We got out on the main street, and we were running 60 mph and the only word that comes to mind is planted and stable. Except for the wind from the short windscreen, I was truly impressed. We stopped and switched bikes the CVO SG was a Whiskey Neat paint, and it was stunning in the sunlight. The SG felt like home...everything was the same, bars, seat position to the faring, as my 2015. I know the RG and SG are the same except the fairing, so I pretty much expected them to ride the same. They didn't. The SG just didn't feel as good as the RG, which really had me shaking my head. How could there be such a difference? The cable clutch took a little getting used to, the 121 pulled like it wanted to run, but I really didn't turn a lot of rpms, the suspension seemed firm but a little more refined than my 2015. I'm probably not a good person to review this bike as it's the only RG I ever rode. Not sure if they all ride like this, but this one definitely got my attention in a nice way.
I've owned Fat Boys, Ultra Classics, Limited's and Street Glides, loved them all for their own reasons, but this RG seemed really special to me.
So, thinking i was having a good day, maybe that's why this bike felt so different and good. I took it out for a ride the next day, half expecting it to remind me of my old SG. Nope.... the feeling was still the same. Handles like a dream, the balance to me seems perfect. Not sure if it's the center of gravity that's different, or the fixed fairing mounted to the frame, that changes the balance, but to me....there is a noticeable difference. For a stock motor it pulls hard, the VVT is part of it im sure, but the power seems more even.
To say i am impressed is an understatement.

I ordered a 10 inch smoked, I think it will be fine. Neither of my local dealerships had any 10 inch windscreens in stock anyway.

Nice write-up.  I tried since 12 to get my wife on a Road glide.  Weight of fairing is on frame not forks.  So it feels easier to turn at slow speeds.  Also in parking lots, tight turns your not shifting any weight.  You will notice on the interstate they handle the dirty air around 18 wheelers much better.  I feel the bike is better balanced.  In 15 my wife finally tried a Rod Glide.  Then she bought one.  She said she didn't feel as worn out after a long days of curvy roads.

Hey Dave thanks for sharing. Got tripped 1,000 on mine and LOVE it. made some changes and added a few, but it is the best Harley I've ever owned. the 12" would work for me at 6'2" looking right thru the recurve and found another guy who is working on a backrest for me. www.utpr.com, The seat is terrible.
