This tensioner thing has been going on for years. I changed to gear drives and the Freedom Cycle kit at about 24K and the performance was fantastic. If you are happy with your current performance just change the tensioner and go another 24K. The worst thing that could happen would be that your oil pressure might start dropping. Just keep a eye on it. I have seen 103's with 45k on the original tensioners. I am sure they are bad but they still keep going. This is what mine looked like at 24K.

I had just over 66 thousand on my 01 ultra before I totaled it 4 months ago and I checked the tensioners  about 1000 miles before that for the second time and those mf'ers looked  damn near brand new. I know its hard to believe but all I can attribute that to is running mobile1 since the first thousand miles. Maybe I just got lucky but then again Im not the type of guy that hammers on my chit. I dont like to waste money so I try and run things the way way their meant to be run. Anyway in my honest opinion if your gonna get in there and f with the tensioners your a fool if you dont go ahead and go GEAR DRIVE.......jUST MY OPINION :bananarock:

that's great if your crank is w/in tolerance...

after a recent phone call with Brian (Hogasm) and not wanting to tear my bike down, check the run out on the crank, determine if I am w/in tolerance THEN order the correct parts, I am going with 575's and the new hydraulic tensioners...no run out issues to deal with and I don't get any more noise with geared cams.

The noise isn't an issue at all, so let that one go. The newer cam plate and pump make the change worth it if you want to use your original cams. The bike will run cooler and the cam chest won't cook the tensioners.  I'd say if changing cams and head work is in your future the gear drive eliminates most of the timing slop caused by those long chains and you get the performance you paid for. NOISE? We're talking about Harley's here right? Not Honda's, or BMW's!   ::)

If I have been reading this correctly, most likely next summer I will be in range of proactively
1. Replacing original cam tensioners - somewhere in the $500 - $700 Range

2. Replacing with the 07 Hydraulics - somewhere in the $1,200 - $1500 Range

3. Gear Driven - How much all said and done did you lay out for this?

I still have time to consider which way I want to go with my 03 SERK.

I was concerned about the cam chain tensioners from all the horror stories I'd read, and saw of the tensioners deteriorating. I decided when I did do something about them I would upgrade to gear driven cams and while doing that I would replace a few other related moving parts...

Zippers 575 Gear Drive Cams
Zippers Pro-Tapered Adjustable Push Rods
Zippers Oil Pressure Bypass Shim
Feuling Oil Pump
Feuling Lifters

Other then those mechanical mods to the powertrain that's all I've done/plan on doing. The cams were specifically designed for the CVO 103ci motors to trick the motor into thinking it has more compression. The lifters/push rods were related items in the function of the cams (so why not replace/upgrade them at that time). Replacing the oil pump was added security since I wasn't doing the work and didn't want to risk there being bits/pieces of the tensioners that had scored the pump. Along w/the oil pump the bypass shim just gave me better oil pressure. Presently I don't plan on doing anymore mods to the motor (that statement will surely come back to bite me in the @$$ :D).

Ball park I'm thinking about 2k - 2.5k. That included all parts, installation, and tuning afterwards. I'll check receipts when I get home after work to make sure.

It was just short of 2k ($1,900) for everything.
