For Matt's New Trailer
« on: July 22, 2009, 10:49:39 AM »

Hope any of this helps getting the new-to-you Bushtec mated up to the SEEG.  The harness adaptor is worth using and doesn't come from Bushtec:

Matt, if you decide to use the FLHX rear fascia to hide the hitch it does an almost surprisingly good job at concealing all the new bits you'll be hanging.  Receiver is all mounted here.  But you don't see much.

Until you hang the hitch itself in the receiver.

Here's an illustration of what new you're adding to the bike.

And the side plates.

Hitch is made up of three brackets.  The side plates on each side and the center receiver section that bolts between them.  It'll be important to leave it all loose at first attachment.  You'll like need all the wiggle room you can get from the slotted mounting holes.

The new rear harness from Bushtec is nice and plenty long.  That and the new interconnect pigtail make the hookup a pretty simple chore.

Don,
For the fender mods, do I have to buy the whole fender??? Cost?? Or is it an add on to the existing fender???

For the extended period with no trailer behind the bike I just run a long wire tie around the receiver and strap the plug flat up against it.  Makes it unnoticed unless you both squat down and know it's there to look for it.

No fender mods Matt.  If you mount the new piece as Harley does on the FLHX bikes you'll get a couple of extra support brackets and drill holes in each fender.  I didn't.  Several others here didn't either.

Hit a parts store or auto body shop supply house.  Get some of the two sided 3M moulding tape.  Trim it to fit all the contact areas of the rear fascia.  Then just stick the thing to the fender.

Only exta part of the task is the "lip" of the fascia where it goes up under the bottom of the rear fender.  It intrudes in to area of existing bracketry.  Had to take a dremel and cut some portion of the end of that fascia lip off.  Don't remember for sure how much now.  But it wasn't much.  And still left plenty of contact area for the two sided emblem tape to do its job.

Bob,

I slip mine between the tire and the hitch frame and then lay it flat on the top side of the hitch frame, a tie wrap keeps it in place.

Will try.  It is one continuous piece that replaces the existing covers currently between your saddlebags and fender and adds the light housing at the bottom of the fender.  All one big U shaped piece.  Stock on the FLHX it bolts on.  But it doesn't have to (so you don't have to drill six holes in your fender).  Can be mounted with that nuclear capable two sided tape from 3M.  It extends below the rear of the fender far enough to very neatly hide the receiver part of the new hitch.  The side cover part of the fascia also effectively hides the new side bracketry.

Thanks for the info Don!

OK, I'll be one of the "old timers" who have always wanted to know more about the Street Glide fender extension and now we know "The rest of the story"!  (This is gonna cost me some money, huh?)

Thanks again!

Okay folks,
It's home. Grandpadoc met me in Orange County to pick up my "new to me trailer". I have to admit that I was a little on edge before seeing it in person, but now that it's home........I love it.  Thanks again Lou for finding it and helping me get it home.  My painter is stopping by in an hour or so to discuss paint.....maybe it'll stay as it is.  Dunno.  Here are some pics for all.
