ZUMO 550 Going bezerk
« on: October 20, 2010, 09:19:01 PM »

My rather reliable Zumo 550 decided that it was having a stroke.

flaking out - screen not responding - touch one part and another button energizes

I tried to calibrate and that did not help.

It looked like a $150. exchange was the only way to get my no longer optional accessory working again.

Then I found a thread on Zumo forums about replacing the Screen digitizer.

So for less than $20.00 I replaced the part and Wa LA it is working perfect.

ebay part
http://cgi.ebay.com/ONE-NEW-LCD-Touch-Screen-Digitizer-GARMIN-ZUMO-550-/190456441120?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2c5816a920

This only took 15 min and you need a T5, T6, T10 and small phillips.

Wow... can't beat that price. :2vrolijk_21:

That would have made a great "How To Do It" thread if you had taken pics with step by step instructions. I guess we'll just have to send ours to you now when this repair is needed... you work for beer? ;D

I wish I had been able to find the part a month ago as I just sent my 550 in for an exchange. Second time the screen delaminated. Is there a Garmin part # on the box or is it a China replica.

Great price but it looks like they may not always be available.

they are always available and I cannot tell if the part was a knockoff,
but I can tell you that the screen was made specifically for the Zumo 550

I plan to order another for a spare.
This is one of the more common issues with the 550.

at less than $20.00 shipped, it is good insurance.

Purchased the replacement screen off ebay. Bought the 63mm one and not the 64mm one. It is a smaller than the stock one. Should have bought the 64mm  one.

It was also thinner than the original one so I took 2 layers of blue masking tape and furred out the hold down bracket.

Works now :2vrolijk_21:

I did the same this spring.  Around $30 on Ebay - from Hong Kong...  The screen looked like an exact duplicate to the one I removed.  It took about 15 minutes, tops...   :2vrolijk_21:

my Zumo 550 and my friends both crapped out on our 5 day trip with the same issue. We sent them in and it has been 5 weeks. Mine should be here today .  Seems like alot of 550 screens go bad. But I can't ride very far without it . Saves time and money.   Billy

That is the exact same vendor I used and everything went very well.
It arrived faster than I expected.
Easy fix

There are two methods of replacing the screen.  One is to replace the screen only - the other is to replace the entire screen assembly...  Replacing the entire screen assembly is a bit easier, and about $10 more costly...
