Zumo vs Nuvi
« on: November 21, 2010, 09:29:17 PM »

I'm a long time GPS user, first one was a Garmin EMAP, then two 2610s, and now a 2720.  These are on the bike, I've also had a couple of Nuvi's (first was stolen) that I use in the truck.  I prefer the Nuvi's for virtually anything I do, and I use a GPS almost daily.

It's time to replace my 2720 and I can't bring myself to pull the trigger on a $500-600 Zumo. I can get a Nuvi 855 for $110 that has features that the newest Zumo's still don't have.  I understand the waterproof difference, and don't see that as a big deal.  I also know about but don't buy into the "resistance to vibration" difference.

Is anyone running a Nuvi on their bike?  handlebar mounted?  How has it held up for you?

I will probably go with a Nuvi 855, if it dies I'll throw it away and get another one.  I can't believe that a Zumo is 5 times better than a Nuvi, or will outlast 5 Nuvi's.

I want to go with this model for the MP3 capability. Don't care about bluetooth or XM radio, well XM would be nice but I'm not paying for the subscription.

I used a 750 on my bike for 3 years with nary a problem, other than leaking baggies.  Both handlebar and control mounts.

I use a Nuvi 350 the only trouble is when it rains It got soaked and water got into the lcd display a couple times but after it dried out it was okay.

I'd like to have the "waterproof" feature but like you I cannot justify the price difference?

The larger problem is the screen is difficult to read with polarized sunglasses but that would be the same on the Zumo too

The 2720 on my wife's bike had the same problem with water getting into the display screen and fogging it up.  And this is supposed to be a waterproof unit.

We replaced it with a Nuvi 500 (waterproof model), so far so good.  Her softail doesn't have near the vibration of my Electra Glide.

Yes the softails are balanced nowhere near the vibes on the "B" engines. I'll have to check out the Nuvi 500?

I have the same issue with my Iphone in the rain just have to remove them or place a Ziploc bag over them  :)

I've been using a 765T on mine since a screwdriver found it's way thru the screen of my 2730, not mounted to the bars though, just the suction mount on the fuel door, no hardwire either.  Works fine, I've loaded a card up with music and turned it on from time to time, but I find myself just listening to the exhaust more and more lately.

The one thing that I really miss from my '07 FLHTC is the MP3 capability of the HK stereo.  A CD with 150 MP3's is all I needed.  I'm anxious to have that capability again, with even more storage with the GPS, two birds with one stone.
