'01 Heritage Softail lower end problem
« on: August 25, 2013, 02:31:16 PM »

My '01 Heritage Softail only has 18,000 miles on it.  It has gear drive cams, Branch heads, etc.
It has been making strange noises that increased to the point I finally took it to the dealer.
They told me there is something wrong with the fly wheels.
They are going to have to tear the whole thing apart.

I certainly don't want them to replace with stock HD parts.
I'm looking at a huge bill.
-not sure if I should trade it in, have it fixed, or maybe buy a different motor. :nixweiss:

Any advice is much appreciated!

Don't mean for this to sound as insipid as it probably will.  But how realistic is a trade in option on a 13 year old Softail with a bad engine?

I agree.  I'm screwed no matter what!
Maybe I should just leave it parked unlocked in a dark alley and turn in an insurance claim!

Watch eBay or Craigslist for a good used engine?  Won't make it the hot rod it was but will make it mobile.

Anyone tried 'em?

That's the place in Wichita?  I'm a couple hundred miles from them and if it's the place I'm thinking of know a guy who has had his Pan stuff down there.  The work was beautiful.

Yeah, they're in Wichita.
I need to see what damage has been done, but If it's just the flywheel assembly, I DEFINATLY am not going to use the same MoCo parts that failed.
I really like this bike.
The only thing wrong seems to be that the flywheels are out of whack.

It is a different set of questions if the problem is limited rather than totally catastrophic.  Crank work is bad enough.  Having to do everything though; that's just ugly.  Good luck with good options.  :2vrolijk_21:

I would imagine that T & O can attend to the crankshaft needs.
Another option would be Hoban Bros., in Newton, Wisconsin.

I think you're right.  S&S will probably be what I'll end up going with.

I have a set of Truit and Osborne heavy stroker flywheels in my 96 WG which is an EVO motor but they have been great. Don't know if they do Twin Cam.

Looking at their website, it doesn't look like they do Twin Cam.
If I have to go through all this I might as well stroke the motor.  Otherwise trade it for a '14 Street Glide.
Although the bike is 13 years old, it's in perfect condition.
Decisions decisions!
