Title: 2017 CVO SG petrol cap trim flaking off coating
Post by: jude05 on June 08, 2017, 06:57:22 AM
Hi Folks
My bike is about 7 months old and i noticed last week the coating on the edge of the petrol cap trim is flaking off...is this caused by fuel? I'm very careful with my bike and know it hasn't been knocked OT anything, saw it lifting a few days ago then the flake fell off. Anyone else had that and do you think ill be able to get the dealer to replace it under warranty? Its looks ugly coz i know its there! I would take it to my dealer. It should be covered under warranty. If not, it isn't that expensive to replace. I know my dealer would cover it.

Absent any indication of damage from an external factor, it definitely should be covered under the factory warranty.

Mine did this and the dealer said that it could be from hitting it with the fill nozzle. It's $10 for a new one so didn't bother pushing it. Pick your battles.

yeah, I've had to replace mine twice in 4 years.  the first time was under warranty, the second time, was on my dime.  the problem is that no matter how careful you are when you fill up, there is going to be 'that' time that the fill nozzle will hit the edge of the trim ring.  with your bike being only 7 months old, dealer should cover it.  but eventually, you will have to replace it on your dime.  I'm due again, and I am careful with fueling.  :coolblue:

but if not, the good news is that the trim ring is less than $15.  be sure when you install it, that you follow the directions explicitly.  you can't just set the ring down and stick it.  you have to rotate it around until you find the 'best fit', then stick it down.

item 10 on the included pic....

Thanks for the info, obviously it a very fragile bit of kit. Don't think i can be much more careful than i already am so it maybe a regular thing.

I end up replacing mine about once a year or so for the same thing. Dealer does warranty for me under factory warranty but not when that runs out and I am under ESP which is fine.

Ditto same here just a plain stupid application, painting a black plastic part better off leaving it without paint.....

Is it possible to get a 3M clear protector for the ring?

Is it possible to get a 3M clear protector for the ring?

I wouldnt think so. I've been trying to get the 3M sheet to bend around the edge on my lowers where the side of my shoe will hit when using the highway pegs, and that stuff just wont bend that sharp. Plus it doesnt like compound bends, and a ring is way more complicated.  After a couple of days, its pulling loose, so off it comes.
