Title: Need new air cleaner - opinions wanted.
Post by: wachuko on November 01, 2011, 12:16:37 PM
With the install of the front lower fairings the stock air cleaner does not work/fit.

Ok, help me decide...

I sent emails to these two companies (Performance Machines and Roland Sands Design) to ask if the HD Throttle Body cover  (http://"http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448777480&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309439885&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309439885&locale=en_US&bmUID=1320160804649&bmLocale=en_US")that I have will work with their cleaners... I hope it does since I do not want to see those cables/plugs exposed.

So, what do you guys think... for my bike, what would look best.  BTW, I like them all... so no "select the one you like man!" comments needed,  ;D hehehehe

Same as above but with contrasting cuts... I think this goes better with the rest of the bike... muffler tips, spot lights... hummm

This one shows the inside of the carb... looks cool, only concern would be how long before it is all dirty inside from splash of oil, fuel, etc??

So share your thoughts....

I like the second one down best, but any would be good.  None are as nice as stock.

....................................................

I guess I don't follow what you're saying.  There are two versions of the Heavy Breather, one for bikes without lowers, a different one for bikes with lowers.  The only difference is the actual air filter (shorter for bikes with lowers).  If you were aware of that, are you saying even the shorter element won't work?  Or do you just not like the HB and want to change to something else?

I think from a previous thread I read about his install, Wachuko is installing the lowers with the glove boxes and the HB interferes with the fit. IMHO, the contrast cut design will match your bike the best. :2vrolijk_21:

Would think the MoCo would have remedy, as long as it involves spending...

Prefer stock, then option #2.  Like option #1, however, might wash out against your black motor.

You are a pioneer, enjoy your posts and pics :pumpkin:

Correct.  It seems that either version will not work with the glove boxes, let alone speaker (if I ever install those...).  So best to bite the bullet and get another air cleaner.

The problem with the stock filter assy is not the filter itself as much as the beautiful cover that comes with it.It hits the lowers even if you eliminate the glove box. If you run the shorter  filter then you just have the exposed filter element and no spiffy SE aluminum cone shaped cover. That really sucks(no pun intended) becuase lowers are a must in my opinion and you can't run em with the stock filter assy.If you install a shorter intake tube then the back of the housing hits the breather tube on the front cylinder. I checked into having one machined to fit and this is what I ran into. There has to be a way to have your cake and eat it too. Someone here will figure it out.
To answer your question about the choices----------------if it were me I would install a screamin Eagle filter and element off a SESG before I would use one of your choices above. Just my opinion.

The Ventilator HD filter would be a decent option, IMO.  It doesn't stick out very far, so not as much interference with the right knee as some of the aftermarket stuff.  If not, then the second picture looks best to me.

The RSD Turbine contrast cut with your bike would look outstanding!!!

I think this one...

Would fit in/blend better w/the rest of the current theme on your bike...

If I had to have a second choice this would be it...

I agree with D00d... the RSD A/Cs are killer, and chrome and black would look grab on your bike... Have thought about replacing the stock Ventilator on my bike with the chrome one. They are the best looking A/Cs in the business, I think. Totally custom look.

I am having a hard time deciding between those two... those are my two top choices as well, the contrast cut just go with the rest of the details on the bike... thank you guys!  :2vrolijk_21:

You could pull a dirty sock over the induction module with a machine that looks that good!  :2vrolijk_21:

The second one would look best with your bike as it would match the Headwinds spots and muffler tips...however I do like the stock one the best.

Here is another option for you...by Paul Yaffe...his kit can be tilted upwards...maybe you can use the stock air cleaner and cover and give your stock air cleaner some "attitude"?!

Your bike, your call!

Or how about an Arlen Ness?

I am hoping that I can use the cover already there for the EFI cable/plug and just install the air cleaner on top of that cover...

It has double gasket... but I have not found photos of the back of the RSD Air Cleaner... it will all depend on the shape... I guess there is only one way to find out...

I did look at that one.  Can use any derby cover.  At the end I liked more the others listed above.

I have the Ness Derby Sucker on the Evo. You can use any derby cover with it. I have the same derby cover on it that I have on the primary, timer cover, etc. Looks really good to have everything match... like it's a custom bike...

I went with the RSD platinum cut 7 spoke Speed a/c.

I thought that the 7 spoke design went with my wheels a little better than the others.
You have the same wheels so it's probably worth a thought!!

I was also worried about the electronics being exposed once the stock a/c was removed (which incidentally I hated!) and considered trying the HD part that you're looking at. The RSD a/c covers all of that stuff though so there was no need for it  ;D

That is great to know, thank you!  I will place the order today.

Exchanged emails with Rick Preuss from Roland Sands Design (I was not aware that Performance Machine and RSD are one and the same... no wonder the base of the air cleaners looked the same!)... anyway, he told me that there are Outer Kits available... so later down the road if I want to change the face for a Clarity look I can do so...

Order placed for the Turbine A/C with Dan @ Direct Harley Parts.

Yep... Perry Sands (owner/founder of Performance Machines) is Roland Sands Dad. :2vrolijk_21:

Wachuko - so, what have you decided and do you have any pics - I am in the process in getting a parts order for a friend that has a new 12 CVO RG - Maple - He wants Lowers AND the speaker kit.   LSHD has a great sale going with free shipping and 20% off list - time is now - however, this breather issue has got us stumped..

New to this board - came over here from hdforums.com - suggested by another member - great info here.

Thanks to all

Welcome!

I went with a different air cleaner (RSD) to be able to accomodate the lowers and (in the future) speakers.

Your friend will need to figure out which air cleaner he likes best, many to choose from.  From the stock SE H-D to many in the aftermarket world.

I realize this is very old but here goes. I just bought the rsd turbine. It wouldn't fit on my 2002 flhrsei. Talked to Roland sands. Said they couldn't guarantee fitment on my cvo. I'm bummed. The breather were 1/4 inch too long and the throttle body holes were 1/4 inch too low. Any suggestions?
