'15 C.V.O. LImited Ultra exhaust glowing Orange ???
« on: March 08, 2015, 08:59:41 AM »

I have a '15 C.V.O. LImited Ultra  that has 1700+ miles on it and just had it in to the deaership to fix a leaking hose clamp but after getting it back my 'ole lady noticed that both exhaust pipes are glowing orange under the chrome heat shield right out of both heads.....we went for a ride and i thought I smelled antifreeze so I revved it up in the garage, that's when we noticed it glowing. ....is this normal?    I've had three other Harleys and don't remember the pipes glowing ?  (Had one that would shoot flames if I hit the rev limiter)

I have a 2014 and don't recall this ever happening. I have not sat in the garage and just reved the engine and I assume this is happening under normal conditions.

No it doesn't sound right, and I suggest you get it back to that dealership and find out what happened.  I assume the bike is still stock (?), so it's running lean, but unless you were really beating on it you shouldn't see the pipes turning red or orange.  And check the coolant level; wouldn't be the first shop to work on the cooling system and not fill it and purge the air afterward.

No it's not stock, Vance & Hines X-Pipe with V & H big ovals + super tuner & Dyno @ the same shop......fuel mileage has sucked all winter (ride as soon as streets are plowed, sometimes -9*) and now doing this ......had a '12 C.V.O. Ultra Classic that never did this ......?

If not coolant system related....
I will bet your tune is bad. The super tuner probably adjusted after the dyno tune or after the download was installed till the cells are so far out of wack its lean.
I am guessing this as if the tuner downloaded a map and selected "enable Smart turn Reflash" but was not trying to record and change the map again, the bike will continue to tune itself until you have very little fuel, causing lean condition and very hot exhaust. Also power will be way don't especially at any highway speed. Seen it before....

From the manual...
•If available for your calibration, selecting the Enable Smart tune Reflash box increases the Closed Loop data set of the selected calibration.
•This should be selected when you are planning to collect data for use with the Smart tune feature.
•This box should never be selected and reflashed to a motorcycle when not collecting data.

Sure sounds like a tuner issue!

A rich condition can makes pipes glow also because the fuel is still burning in the pipe.

Vacuum leak will make the exhaust glow.  Seen it on many cars.

Yep the vacuum leak adds too much air creating the lean condition as mentioned

No  CIGAR lighter on the dash to be politically correct, but it is provided in another manner LOL!! ::)
Seriously, its time to go to a professional dyno tuner, and have the bike properly setup!  twinotter

Check header pipe under tyranny  mine had a small crack in it found when in foe 1000 mile service  an for Dino tune  Fulsac ceramic coated header   They are replacing it lucky it did not run hot  was wondering why pipes showed black due to rich condition then cleaned up on 600 mile trip
