On the way to Eureka Springs, or Going down on I-40 W.
« on: May 17, 2016, 10:09:15 PM »

Well sometime between 9:30 and 10 AM Central time I had the unpleasant experience of a tank slapper and went down with the bike. I was towing my Redneck Redtec1 trailer. I believe the trailer saved me from flipping and a trip to the hospital. I rode it out and laid her down staying on the low side. I was on wet pavement and running 70 mph. There was a wiggle then straight into a full blown tank slapping violent fishtailing ride. I got it slowed down to 55 then laid her down.
I did get a couple of raspberries on my arm and butt. Otherwise no major injuries or cuts. My bike didn't fair as well but I was able to ride it towing the trailer to Bumpas HD Jackson TN. A heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to FlaHeatWave  Ed and Jaynae for all they have done making sure I was okay. Also Brett Henson and Jim Castellano of Bumpas HD for getting me in the shop and back on the road safely. They were the best and I will recommend them to anyone in the Jackson TN area.
My trip to Eureka Springs continues and we will be there tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks to all that have been a part to this day and offered assistance for whatever I need. That is what makes this group so special.
I was told to buy a lottery ticket today and also that an angel was sitting on my shoulder. I do believe the Good Lord was with me today.

Mike

Thanks again for the extra check-ins today Mikey.  Felt a lot better knowing all was good and stayed good as the day progressed.  The bits and pieces we talked about are in the saddlebag ready to go.  Just glad you're ok.

At this point the next most important question then is; none of the kool aid got broke did it?!?!  ???

WoW....down on the superslab!! You rodeher like a pro Mike, glad you and your cargo are OK. I hit a deer in Colorado several years back and have always said having a trailer on saved my butt. Now you prove it again, along with Jock. Safe rest of travels and don't tell Momma til you get home.

Just read this, Unc.  Glad you were and are in the Lord's hands.  Sheet metal and plastic can be replaced but bones and skin are much harder to mend.  Glad it was just a scrape or two to you and none of the "precious cargo" was damaged.

Bumpus in Jackson is a fine dealership.  We've stopped many times and they are always nice and seem to have a ride planned somewhere all the time.

PM sent.

"and have always said having a trailer on saved my butt. Now you prove it again".................. :nixweiss:

2K,  I read thru these post entries pretty fast,  but don't believe I saw anyone address the (cause) that Mikey got into a "tank slapper" in the first place.

Personally,  instead of "praising" the trailer as (saving his azz),  I would point directly at the TRAILER as the primary cause for the slapper scenario to occur.

It's been a long time back,  but my return ride from the 100 yr HD anniversary deal in Milwaukee,  we encountered the immediate aftermath of an overturned Harley (with  trailer) in the middle of the interstate.  I chatted with the car driver that was directly behind the bike/trailer rider.  He said that the trailer started fishtailing and caused the rider to loose control and he was thrown from the bike to the pavement and the bike/trailer ended up in the ditch upside down with the trailer tires still spinning when I was there.

BOTTOM LINE...............In that case,  I imagine the trailer load front to back (re: tongue weight) was not as should be and created the problem.   I have no clue as to Mikeys situation other than to say.................My bet would be he would NOT have gotten into a "tank slapper" had he NOT been pulling a trailer in the first place. :soapbox:

Happy to hear that you're OK Mikey.  The bike doesn't sound that bad, either, if you're still riding it.

Easy to play arm chair quarterback and a lot of people did it after my accident so I'll keep my thoughts regarding how it happened, to myself.  Just be sure to get the neck bearings and the fall away checked ASAP!  :2vrolijk_21:

I easily see where an improperly loaded trailer could cause a problem rather than prevent one. I would bet the farm this wasn't the case with Unc. He has pulled that trailer and it precious cargo for several years now behind both Scooters & trucks and knows how to load it. In my case, how many times have you heard of someone hitting a deer at 60mph killing it on impact and not even laying down? I passed 2 emergency vehicles as I was going down the mountain, stopped in Silverton and called 911 and told them I had hit a deer and my scoot was damaged pretty good ($4100). They said thanks for calling cause they were looking to scrape me off the road. A car behind me called 911 and told them a motorcycle had hit a deer......then the azzholes passed me without stopping to see if I needed help, of course they probably couldn't pull a trailer either!!! Ask Grandpadoc if his trailer helped him. :nervous:

I am glad you made it through this OK.  I was going to ask if you knew what caused the problem. I am not sure what "tank slapping" is but I assume this when you fishtail hard.

Speed wobble, head shake, death wobble and shimmy are different terms used for the same action of a "tank slapper." It's slang which refers to the action of the front forks violently moving side to side and the handlebars almost slapping the tank.

So dang glad you're gonna be ok uncle Mikey.
Honestly made my insides try and become my outsides when I got word of the incident. Bikes and material crap can be repaired/replaced.
As others have said thanks be to the good Lord for watching over you.

I don't know, a 'tank-slapper' can make you lose all judgment for awhile.  It takes a support group  to prevent serious mistakes.

I had to head out ahead of most of the rest of the crowd.  Had to pick up the dogs today about noon so I'm home now and the dogs are vegging out glad to be home.  The crowd in Eureka should be enjoying an absolutely great day to be out riding though.  Just a gorgeous day today and a great ride home for me this morning.  Mikey should be hootin' and hollerin' like Slim Pickens on an atom bomb out for the first really good day on the Indian!!   :drink: :drummer: :drink:

ok, Uncle Mike and I might have been offended about no one buying our bullchit... might have....  but we was havin' too much fun  :drink:

Mike I  didn't know about the accident until I heard it from Jimmy today. Glad you are ok, good to see you still smiling as always, even if you seem to be riding an unfamiliar and, dare I say, weird looking bike! Is that a Polaris Snowmobile?  :P Ride safe and see you in 3 months!

I am home safe and sound. I would like to thank everyone for their concerns and well wishes. I also would like to thank those that offered to come get me and the bike and get me home. I really appreciate the offers and the phone calls. Things like that is what makes this forum special. No forum itself is worth a damn, only the people on the forum make it great. I do believe we are members of the greatest forum on the internet.
OBTW, as a side note. Not one jar of berry juice was harmed during the incident.
See y'all on the road, bright side up!
Thanks again,
Mike

' I have pulled a lot of trailers (CDL, boat business) just never with a motorcycle...
After riding 800 miles or so with MikeyTee, his trailer tracks as straight and true as any I have ever seen, even over bumps and railroad tracks... I was not with him at the time of the incident, but, from what I can tell, contributing factors where the condition of the tires and the shocks on the bike...
I wholeheartedly agree with Mikey's post above, the members make the CVO forum the greatest ever :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

As far as the Indian goes, I didn't see any major scratches on Mikey's helmet, but he must have bumped his head somewhere along the way :nixweiss:

Hey unc, stopped by Bumpus in Jackson, TN on Thursday. Bought a t-shirt or two and thanked them for taking care of our friend.  I wanted them to know that good service, customer care and the news of such travelled far and wide.  Nice folks at Jackson.

IIRC, that's the 2nd time in about a year that same dealer helped out a member in need. I remember a thread last year about someone needing help and they stepped up to the plate pretty good. We stopped there on the way to TX last year to pick up poker chips and I made mention of it to the people in the service department that the word is out about them being a place to go when in need.

That was probably me on my way to Ribfest last year. The Bumpus location in Murfreesboro did a stellar job getting us back on the road after some horrendous cam chest noises began emminatinng from the bike. Very good folks at the Bumpus owned dealerships here in TN.

I was so impressed we moved so that now they're my home   dealership.

Ok, we moved for other reasons, but they are my home dealership. ;)
