New Recall for the Hydraulic Clutch on 2016s
« on: July 13, 2016, 07:59:01 AM »

I was at the dealer yesterday and they were talking about a recall that just came on for the 2016 involving the clutch. If I understood this correctly (I did not read it) there is something in the system that breaks down creating air bubbles. the fix is to drain and clean the system.  This is just for the 2016s.

That's the same "fix" they used twice before.  Obviously they haven't gotten to the root cause of the problem.

Still can't find a recall number, but came across this on another site:

--------------------------
Recall Date JUL 08, 2016
Last Updated Jul 10, 2016

Harley-Davidson has learned that the hydraulic clutch system with black master cylinder part numbers 36700049B, 36700056B, 36700146 and 36700186 on certain model year 2016 Touring and Softail model motorcycles may exhibit a condition in which it may lose the ability to generate enough lift to disengage the clutch after being parked for an extended period.

 Model
 2016 Electra Glide UltraL

 Safety Risk

If this condition remains undetected it could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle when started in gear or first shifted into gear after being parked for an extended period.

 REMEDY

Owners of the affected motorcycles will be asked to arrange service with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, who will confirm that the motorcycle is covered by this recall. If covered, the dealer will inspect the clutch master cylinder for the presence of gas in the fluid. If there is gas in the fluid, the dealer will flush the clutch system with the recommended wash solution and rebuild the clutch master cylinder using the recall kit provided. This service will be provided at no charge to the customer. We strongly urge you to take your motorcycle to your dealer to have the appropriate service performed as soon as possible. Should you  choose to ride your motorcycle prior to this service, we urge you to be aware of this condition. Some product campaigns may have expired and you may have to pay for the service. Please see your local Harley-Davidson dealer for further details.
------------------

Saw another one concerning Dyna's being talked about also.

It appears that Harley can't find their collective azzes with either hand.  Perhaps they should go back to cable or rod activated drum brakes to solve their hydraulic brake problems, and back to cable clutches to solve that problem, until they hire someone who is bright enough to figure this simple chit out and fix it permanently.

That sounds like it. The dealer had just got the papers.

Since Harley seems to have a recurring gas problem, I'd like to propose they add the product illustrated below to their DOT-4 fluid supply.

Racing brake fluid gas bubble busters will void your warranty.

Just scheduled my 1K service, and the dealer said they need my motorcycle in quarantine for 24 hours to perform the test required to determine if there's an issue with my master cylinder.  Very inconvenient, as the dealer is 45 minutes away, and I use my bike to commute to work.  I asked if they could provide a loaner, and of course the answer was NO.

If you purchased the bike from this place, I'd talk to the owner and not just the hired help about the loaner.  You can bet the owner and many others ride "demonstrators", but if not then I'm sure they have suitable used bikes they could let you have for however long it takes them to do the recall.  If they still refuse to do the right thing, I'd let H-D know about it and ask what they would like to do to get THEIR safety recall performed.  And if it were me, you can bet I'd never spend another dime in that dealership.

Had this issue with my '13 except I was sitting at a red light when it " lost its ability " to disengauge the clutch. They rebuilt the master cyl. all has been good since. And it is a black cyl. So they STILL haven't got this lined out???

The owner has three stores and this is not the "home" store.  I don't believe I've ever seen Mr. Cole in Wytheville, but his son runs the shop there.  No joy on the loaner.
