Picked this up a couple weeks ago, 18000 miles. Needs some TLC, so I've been working on it. Aluminum was in bad shape. so painted motor, trans, inner primary, engine/trans/primary covers, lower legs etc., going out for powder coating.

Disassembled for paint PC etc. Used VHT flameproof coating on the drivetrain.

I'll keep my eye on this one, too. The FXRP was one heck of a bike. There was a great local Harley mechanic in K'ville that rode one of these with a sidecar. Larry was a hoot on that bike and one heck of a mechanic (he had a couple US patents with the MoCo...smart feller). He's gone but not forgotten.

Good luck on the build. I look forward to the progress and completion as I know you do.....

Progress will slow some as $$$$ are short at the moment, and this has become like a peeling an onion, LOL. Needs a lot of TLC.

Removed the front end last week, this is what greeted me when I removed the fork cap. Doubt the forks were serviced in the last 24 years.

That's going to be really nice Ridgerunr! Well done... I went through the same thing with my '86 FXR, but it was a few ago now. Frame out powder-coat, engine rebuild, new paint, etc. Looking forward to seeing the final version.

Got the Race Tech goods installed in the forks and hung. Have a lot to do, but threw out my back 2 weeks ago and it's not healing, so moving around the bike slowly. Physical therapy today, hope it helps, I'm wanting to get this finished.

Got the cam installed and the rocker covers buttoned up. Those rear rocker cover bolts on the left side are a b%#ch to get at, making progress, albeit slowly.

Thoroughly de-grease, I used Gunk spray foam. do it twice. Then clean with Simple Green, rinse really good, let dry overnight then apply paint. Be mindful of overspray, so move the car, other bikes out of the garage. The only downside is it's not impervious to spilled gasoline, but if one is careful should last very well.

Edit: Blow off the water with compressed air especially in between fins and tight spaces before air drying overnight.

Never know when you might run across a beautiful FXRP. I just returned from a European vacation which began in Amsterdam a couple weeks ago. While walking back to the hotel from lunch I spotted this beauty parked on the sidewalk (yeah they can do that there). As I was admiring it and taking a photo the owner came up. You can see him in the photo with the helmet in his hand. We talked a bit and he told me about the bike. He brought it a few years ago in Belgium. It originally has been a Brussels police bike. You can see the sticker on the side cover attesting to that. Beautiful bike and fortunate owner to have one so nice.

Have enjoyed your posts about your bike and its progress and wanted to share this with you.
