Selling 2014 CVO Limited
« on: September 06, 2016, 04:29:06 PM »

I was considering trading my CVO for a new bike and was told the NADA was around 24K on a trade in. Two weeks later I went back to check the number again and the trade value was down to 22K. :( WTH??? I lost $2000 in two weeks time. I guess it was the announcement of the new 2017 models along with the 2016 stock dumping at discounted prices. I have seen values from 30K down to 21K for this model bike and need to get a starting asking price. I thought 27-28K was fair and comments.

The bike is the silver and orange one with a milage of about 25K. I need to check the miles and pot a sure number sorry for the ambiguity.

25k is a bunch of miles for a 2014.  I sell before 35k usually and hear the same line of "more than 40k and the value drops" and most Harley riders don't put 10k on a year. Fair price? Who knows and who sets NADA as what you will accept if really a nice bike. Go price a used one in a dealer and bet it's above book value.

So why the trade?

25-27K is where you should start, but be prepared to come down more. Less than 2 months ago I got a 14 with 8800 miles for 25.5K from a dealer. Sure they were asking 31.9K, but it wasn't selling and I made an offer, took almost 2 month of negotiations but I got the deal.

Happened two years ago when the '15 SERGU came out. The value on the '11 SERGU dropped $700 in the first week alone because it was no longer a "one year model". I had locked in a trade value with my dealer pending them making a '15 that I liked. They honored it (and are still sitting on my old bike) and I decided to trade vs trying to sell outright as the tax savings alone was close to $1600 IIRC.  I might have made an extra 400-900 selling it outright but then you have to deal with the hassle. It was easier for me to trade it in.

I hear ya brother. I have been told that I need to sell for $1800 more than the difference for the tax issue. Honestly another few hundred would not be worth the hassle of taking phone calls and all that work of having to sell privately.

BTW the bike has only 23K miles on it now but that is still quite a bit I know. We ride our stuff.

I just traded my 2015 CVO limited in on a 2017 limited and received $23k, I had about 32,000 miles up.
Love the feel of the new bike it seems so much lighter and controllable than my 2014. by the way they offered me $30k trade in if I took a 2016

Was the 2017 $7,000 better than the 2016?  Dang, that's a chunk of change to turn down.

Sorry my bike was a 2014, as far as how better the bike is I won't know until I have ridden it for a while, if you look up the changes it a completely different motor than my 2014

Yes, much different motor but 7 large is still a big difference.  Time will tell so enjoy that new 2017.  I'm hoping it's a great motor for the consumers as well as the MoCo.

You highlight one line when the point is they lose value over certain mileage no matter what year. People just rather buy newer or less miles for the value.  Would you spend 31k for a bike with 40k miles or 41k for zero miles. And realistically 41k cvo can be bought at 36k and dealer still makes 4K on the deal. Just wait till the next year model comes out and they will make that offer.
So yes the bikes can do the mileage but average price is based on less miles.

I do find it odd that people hate to take a chance on buying a bike with 25'000 miles on it like it is worn out and ready for the scrap yard. If you ride like some of us do that is a two year season and not really considered that much riding. The guys that have 8'000 on a three year old bike probably still have the dry rotted tires on it and old oil with plenty of condensation in it. The low milage bikes are also more likely to be the 3-33 mile rides that are harder on a motor than the week doing 1000 miles.

So Harleys don't hold value much better that any other brand right? I heard at the beginning that the CVO's hold their value better. After losing $16'0000 in two and a half years it does not look that good to me. Lord have mercy I have heard the Japanese bikes fair worse so at least i'm glad I'm not in that boat.

Agree on whole statement.

CVO does hold
value compared to buying a Streetglide and putting 15k in extras on it.

My 2012 CVO Limited was worth $1000 more in August before the 2017 came out. I was lucky the insurance company valued it at the August price.

I was thinking of trading my 2012 in September, 2014, for a 2015 Limited.  I had two different dealers (not my local dealer) who were referred to me tell me that they were not interested in doing a trade in on my bike because it had 42k on it at that time.  They wanted low mileage pre-owned bikes that they could move rapidly for top dollar.

I think from now on I'll not keep any bike much past the two year warranty period.  That way it'll have fairly low mileage - not over 42k most likely, lol, and I won't even have to buy the darn ESP.   :2vrolijk_21:

I am glad i got out of my CVO with as little monetary damage as possible. The Indian dealer in Knoxville gave me $23K in trade value on a new Roadmaster. Son of a gun this new Indian is a much better ride than the Harley. Is seems to get a lot more positive attention also. I wish you all well on the aging and quickly depreciating CVO's. If you do decide to keep them however you will never have to worry about it , just ride them and enjoy.

Still have one CVO left and I do plan on keeping it. The 09' yellow Fatbob is quite an animal and may stay with me for quite a while.

If I have learned anything lately is is that nothing satisfies forever for ever. There will be a trade or sell day on every toy I have. I did not go with a custom paint because I did not want to be married to this bike like my wife is to her SGS. It was a 2016 model with custom paint and all the trim you could possible put on a bike done by the dealer and I paid $36K for that thing. We were just told of its trade value and it was awful.

Nothing against Harley since they are are like that but beware that these things depreciate fast especially when a new year comes out that has significant changes.

I can't wait to hear more about your new bike.  I looked at these last year but didn't think it has as much storage room.  Are the 2017's comparable now?  I think all motor vehicles (cars, boats, bikes) will loose value overall (well until it is real old). Mileage does make a difference, especially with air cooled bikes, just like on a car or hours on a boat.  The Roadmaster has pretty good looks but I haven't really heard how it is doing over time and besides what will I do with all my t-shirts HA!!!

Anzac if you got $23.000 for your bike did you pay MSRP for the 2017? If you did you really only got $19,000 for your trade based on the 10% discount I got on my 2017.

I was offered $25k at one dealer and $27k at another for my 2016 CVO Streetglide. I would sell it outright for $30k so I figure if I can get to 28,500 on trade that would put me there with the tax savings.

Since I've seen/heard of a couple of oil leak issues on the M8's, I'll hold out for my number or not trade at all thi year I guess.

Oh Lord don't even mention the t shirts I HATE TO BE CALLED A CROSS DRESSER. I think the storage on the new RM is greater than the Ultras. The lowers have great places for all kinds of things where the water system uses that up on the Harleys and in the top of the fairing is a place and hook up for the phone. I just got back from a 2000 mile tour of the Ozarks and it was a dream ride.

I can't get the pics off my iPhone since this last software update garbage that the phone just did.

I recently offered a guy 26 for his 14 HTKSE and he held at 27.5
I did have 3k miles though...

If you do decide to keep them however you will never have to worry about it , just ride them and enjoy.

Still have one CVO left and I do plan on keeping it. The 09' yellow Fatbob is quite an animal and may stay with me for quite a while.

Just a heads up on this post from September 2016 when Doc traded.  His bike is still for sale at the Knoxville Indian dealer if anyone is interested.  It's been there since he traded last September (it was as of last Friday anyway...).  It's a purdy scooter and slicker than snot on a doorknob...and they are willing to deal since it's been there 7 months.... ;D

Sounds good. Where are you finding these? I am looking, but keep coming across $27-$30k.
