New Nav Maps?
« on: September 06, 2016, 09:14:09 PM »

I think this my be a new version of the maps.

My first upgrade was 2014 something or other, this one says NACVO MY2017.

Anyone check this out or confirm it is a newer version of our maps?

Probably is new.  Takes a year or two to get maps data from field surveys to distributed new maps.  Even Garmin is typically a year or more behind current.  The companies generating the map data have to drive the roads collecting coordinates, address and POI info.  Some can probably come from aerial photo and gov sources but at some point someone has to gather the address and POI changes.  Can you imagine doing this for every change made in the US.  Must be millions of road and company info changes.

Think my May 2015 RGU came with 2013 maps which I updated to 2014 late last year.  May wait another year to do the next update.

I think I saw on the NaviExtras website that one map update is free?  I don't have a bike with the Boom Box GPS so I couldn't verify for sure.

If only one update is free how much are they after that?

I thought we had free updates for 3 years, could be wrong.  The problem is, it takes so long for Naviextras to update their maps.  If indeed its now Q2 2015, this will be the first real update for my '15 CVORGU.  My bike came with 2014 maps installed and the bike will be two years old this Dec.

I checked my database version on my bike and it says  NACVO-MY2016.

I did do an update this spring.

Are we saying that I have the latest update?

Thanks

I don' think so because my bike showed the same thing. so I got a new finger print from the bike and then came in and connected to Navextras site and first had to update the toolbox software. Then it told me there were updates. I am now downloading the new map update and will take quite a while it has been going 45 min and only 26% I will wait till the morning to install on the bike and hope all goes well will update tomorrow.

Go to the bike go to setup scroll down to information then look for soft ware or nav I am typing from memory  and you should find what you are looking for.

Then if you want to do update you have to export from bike to a USB stick at least 8GB formatted fat 32

Do you have the Nav tool box on your computer already if not you need to download that set up an account on the Navextras web site and follow the directions on there site.

I don't have the Nav Tool Box or know what it is exactly.  I also use a Mac if that affects anything...

YOU  must first have a finger print from the bike on the USB stick
Then you have to have the Toolbox software installed on a PC
Then set up login and password on the Navextras site
then login and read directions then plug USB stick in PC and follow directions

I used to consider myself fairly computer-savvy until you said fingerprint from the bike onto USB thumb drive?

Hopefully it's easier than the last update we all had issues installing. I'll have to give it a shot after my trip to Arkansas.

I was not able to get last update to work with a mac.  Called HD and was told it does not support Mac and they have no plans to do so in the future.

Got my local dealer to do the map update for me.

Do you still have to correct the name of the download file prior to loading to bike?  I had to do that last time for the 2016 download.

Thanks for the information.

I opened Naviextras and it opened a dialogue window telling me there was an update and to update the software before proceeding ( words to that affect ), i updated Navi and then we had storm so i lost my internet, sorry ass satellite internet in the boondocks.   Measured amount of bandwidth per month, so i will wait until tonight after midnight, for free zone, not added to my internet usage.

Sat internet is dreadfully slow so it may or may not be successful.  Took me 3 trys on my first update because of the slow connection downloading from the internet.

I never changed any names of files last time, just followed the procedure.

Mine is updating now.

First time I tried, I plugged in the stick before turning the radio on using the accy mode. It was in authentication mode for about 10 minutes even though the radio booted and I got the "ok" screen. I canceled it, shut the radio down, restarted the radio, hit "ok" and then inserted the usb. Took less than 7 minutes this time to get to the "install" screen.

As Chuck mentioned earlier, Boot the radio and hit the OK BEFORE plugging in the USB stick and save yourself the headache.

On the map updates, I don't think so. On the firmware updates that cover the whole radio, yes.

Putting in the video with the thumb print info was topflight. Very nice to offer this bit of information. Even though I thought I new how to do it, I still watched the video and reaffirmed what I remembered from before.
Just a great idea.

thanks!

Thanks Chuck (14CVOultra) for your knowledge and help on the Boom system.  Installed the Navie update with no problems.  This from a guy who can just post a picture in a thread and has NEVER used a gps..   :-\

I'm just in the middle of my Clearwater Darla LED fog light install.  Should be finished tomorrow.  Then I'll attempt the Nav upstate.   :2vrolijk_21:

FYI. I had my son do the update last year when he was visiting on Christmas, as he is a IT guy by profession. After updating the map he also checked and installed what was then the latest Radio update as well from HD. I kept this drive in the drawer for hopefully future use for the same deal.
This morning when I tried to make the fingerprint it would only read the drive to do a radio update and asked if I wanted to update to "trunk". I contacted him and he had me delete the radio update from the thumb, then I plugged it back into the bike and it read it and made the thumbprint in a  few seconds.
Just in case anyone else has a problem.

CVODON,

Not to mix apples and oranges, but I would have at least two 8G usb drives for the Navigation map updates.  Mine are both 16G, they are relatively cheap now.

And i have one USB, 16G for the Boom Box Infotainment updates.

I use one for the Boom Box software updates that we get for free about every 6 months.  As you know, that is a different process and downloading to the computer and then un zipping, extracting and then putting (moving/copying that file to the USB disk.  If you copy that file to the root directory of a clean, (a usb without any files on it) the USB you will always have the most current version on your computer as a backup copy and if you had a problem with the USB drive you could just copy it again to another USB without downloading it again.

Now for the NAV update, the subject of this thread, I used a second USB drive, (i have two for NAV update USB devices), the old one has my current maps on them, the maps that are currently on the bike,  and the new USB will have newest updates on them.   Remember we don't download the NAV updates to the computer hard drive, like we do for the  the Boom Software, we download it directly to the USB.

So if there is a problem doing the NAV, map download or update procedure, you will still have the other USB with your current maps.

So when it is time for my 3rd and final free update, I will use the old '14 map USB and keep the '15 update USB as my backup file.

Before using the '14 map USB, I will delete all and any files on the USB and start again with a clean, no file USB for the download.

I have a slow internet and it took approximately 2.5 hours for the download and then about and hour to install it on the bike.

I don't know that much about the NAVI software, but if I had an internet interruption, and the download failed, I would review the USB for any files, delete them and start over.

If I had a problem with installing the software on the bike, and didn't have time to go thru another download attempt I would still have a USB with last years maps to fall back on.

Bottom line, doing either update, Boom Box or Nav update, always start with a clean USB drive and always have the last software backup.

I installed mine this morning, no issues.

And thanks again to all for listing the procedure steps, and the video.  Made this update easy.

That's great tidbits to know.  I sort of thought a USB drive without anything on it would help.  Like your taste in rides.... :-)

Well, while I appreciate the comments on USB's, I see no need, personally, to keep back-ups. If I have a problem during a new install I am going to find and fix that problem some way. I would probably never reinstall a prior update. So for me this is not something to worry about. But it does help having a son who totally understands all this. I told him about you wanting to use different USB's each time and he said if I wanted to keep copies of past downloads to just save them on desktop. But he also didn't see a need. I do have a seperate one I normally use for Radio updates, just on the one I used today he had installed the radio update on so when I tried to use it for nav it wouldn't work for me, but to him it made no difference, he knew to delete radio update prior to doing map update, I didn't know, but now I do.
But thanks again to everyone who has helped with this.

I did the update today, when I checked the software version it said 9-10-14 and the Data base showed MY-2017.
Should the software be updated to the date I downloaded from Naviextras?

I agree that you don't need backups for every update nor a new usb for every update, two will do giving you the backup and the new maps.

But since the Nav maps are a 2.5 hour download for me and if an install failed it would probably be caused of a corrupted file or other software glitch and i would just reinstall my '14 maps and then schedule a time when i could go through the process again.

If backup files are not important to everyone no problem, but i guess the main thing to take away from this discussion is that with Infotainment and Nav updates always start with a USB that has no files on it.

Done with my Fog Light install.  Now onto Nav Update.

Question...  I am using a new 32gb USB 3.0 drive.  Do I take the fingerprint with it 1st?   Then using same USB drive, download the Nav Update onto it and then load it onto the bike?

When I plug the USB into my PC and open the software it tells me there is an update....it downloads a 16MB .iso file and then I need to navigate and download the map update. I tried with both the update and the map update and got an error on the radio, then tried just the update and it was authenticating for way more than 10 min and never got anywhere. Are you download both updates or stopping at the software update that pops up first?

I could not get a finger print read...  Instructions say to go to Setup then scroll to System Information, then Navigation.  I couldn't get to System Info.  I was in accessory mode to save battery.  I suspect that should limit anything...?

There should be 3 files on the USB stick when your done down loading
swdl.iso

swdlLog.txt

synctool.TBver

Did you wait until the boom box was fully boot up before you plugged in the USB stick on the bike.

It will take 5 to 10 min to authenticate
what did the error say.

The accessory mode won't limit anything. That's all I use when updating. You don't want the headlight on for all that time while doing this.

I did that yesterday also. Let it run for over 10 minutes before cancelling it. I rebooted the radio, let it come up and hit the Accept button, then plugged in the usb. Took roughly 8 minutes for it to ask if I wanted to update the maps that time.

I don't think that it should even matter you should be able to get to the information tab even if the thumb drive is not plugged in I have not seen or heard of your problem.
I would try again with out usb plugged in first if u still can not get to information i would do a factory reset and try again.

Re: New Nav Maps?
« Reply #60 on: September 09, 2016, 11:23:54 PM »

The procedure that I followed:  (best that i can remember)

1  Have a USB without any files on it, at least 8G  ( the nav updates that i downloaded were 3.4 G)

2  Press the trip button to get the electric going on the bike.

3  Turn on the Infotainment system, it boots, accept screen goes away now automatically.

4  Inserted the USB

5  Setup

6  System Info

7  Navigation

8  Exp for Update

9  Select the USB

This was the process to get the finger print, i was amazed it took 2 to 3 minutes.

Then brought the USB in the house, went to the  HD Navi web site and logged in

Opened the Naaviextras software on my computer

Had to log in, in my software.

It said i did not have a device plugged in.

I plugged the USB into the computer.

It said there was an important update, (this was Navi extras software update) I clicked to update the software

Then I think it said an update (maps) was available, and i clicked Install.

2.5 hours later the software was downloaded to the USB.

In the morning, I again went to the bike pressed the trip meter for power

Turned on the Infotainment system

After it booted i loaded the USB

It recognized it and asked if I wanted to update

I think i then clicked OK

About an hour and twenty minutes later it had finished updating the Nav on the bike.

Reference the number of files on the USB: I honestly don't recall, there may have been 3, but as long as there were no files when you started the process it should not be an issue because you are not moving/copying or anything to the files.  The infotainment will recognize what it needs and install the update.
If it is missing a file or some other download issue exists then you would have to delete the files and do the finger print and download again.

I followed these steps and everything went fine until it gets to 25% or so of the download and I get a message saying the download has been interupted please re-insert the usb drive. I have done this a dozen times and still get to the same point and get this message again.
Any thoughts?

I haven't used the GPS yet and just went in to see the version. It's just a map update...I doubt there will be any visually noticeable difference.

If you have a good internet connection then it may be the Navi website that is having an issue.

I would delete whatever is on the usb, do another fingerprint, and then try again.

If the same thing occurs, then i would wait until much later or tomorrow and try again.

If you have the same issue then, I would try another USB.

Thanks for the reply, I should have been more specific. I did the thumbprint and took that to the navi toolbox and verified and downloaded the update along with the NA map. It installed on the usb and completed. I took the sub to the bike in Acc mode and installed the sub and the download started. Here is where I get to my previous post. On the bike the update process stops and the interrupt message appears.
Now the bike is stuck in update mode when you shut down and restart .  :confusedI'm thinking of pulling the main fuse to see if I can get back to normal infotainment system  :confused5:

So, I've gotten my fingerprint, downloaded the correct software to the usb drive in 15 minutes.  Booted up the infotainment, loaded the usb onto the bike, it immediately recognized it, and now it's "AUTHENTICATING".  Has been doing that for 10-14 minutes so far.  Do I just let it continue?  Trickle charger is on also.

UPDATE...   I cancelled the AUTHENTICATING part after 20 minutes and began the process over again.  This time it AUTHENTICATED in 4 minutes, I hit YES and the update is now installing as of 10:44 pm...  Hopefully within the next hour it will be completed...

2ND UPDATE... The update completed in 1 hour and 15 minutes with no apparent issues.

Thanks to the great folks of this forum once again, especially 14CVOultra!

From the 1.20.1 update:

The heading directional display will now operate as a
traditional compass with the top representing the direction
ahead and the rotating needle shall point to the direction of
North.

In many car nav systems, it allows to change your heading from "always pointing north" or  "Direction of Travel"
Is there an option here perhaps?

There was..I have not checked lately...but there was a setting that the NAV arrow always points up whichever way you are going. That was prior to the latest update. it was set like that when I got the bike almost 2 years ago.

I did the upgrade and my directional display is still the same as it was before.  It does not look like a traditional compass.  I tried looking for a setting, but couldn't find one in the setup.  Is there a setting for the directional display?  Thanks.

there is an option to change your display. North up or something else. It was under setup, navigation, display.

I like to run mine in the NORTH UP always mode.

I looked at the nav setup and had to change from 3D to 2D, then that allowed the Compass pointing north option.

Looks like a circle with a small triangle.

I did this in the garage so i haven't ridden with it yet.

I am not an expert on the nav system so there may be more, but this did change the compass.

I believe it is unique to your bike only, hence the reason for the "fingerprint" before starting. But I am just guessing, I have no reason for my guess other than I cannot see Garmin or HD allowing someone to get a free update!

The fingerprint is what identifies your radio/bike and for the update, so another bike would radio/bike would have its own id and would have its own finger print authorization and couldn't use yours.

Just wanted to say thanks to Chuck (14CVOULTRA) and the rest for laying out this Nav Update for Dummies.  You made what appeared to be a very complicated exercise for us non technical individuals easy to follow and complete.  Did mine yesterday and for the first time in my life it seems like, everything went smoothly!

:2vrolijk_21:X2 Agreed :2vrolijk_21: I particularly liked the option of purchasing "Lifetime" maps which is lacking from this Eastern European outfit. I also miss the "perspective" option when looking for a gas station along your route! Currently they simply indicate a compass direction for the gas station and you've gotta hope it's on the highway you want to remain on ::)!
My Map update is almost done ..........thanks again to all for the most excellent help :2vrolijk_21:

Last two versions of the map would get you to my Home.

New version of the map if your headed north on river road, it will tell you to turn left two street before my street, and try to run you up a private gated road.  if headed south on river road, it will still get you to my home.

I think this my be a new version of the maps.

My first upgrade was 2014 something or other, this one says NACVO MY2017.

Anyone check this out or confirm it is a newer version of our maps?

OK, read through this entire thread, I have the toolbox loaded and fingerprint of bike, I am ready to install. My question is: is there any noticeable difference to the mapping after the update? My maps on the '16 SERGU sem pretty acurate.

Just wondering if it is worth the change of screwing up my Boom Audio for the update  ;D

I believe CVO owners get three free updates, but I think that is only the Boom software. I have not heard anything about map updates unless HD includes that with the software update. I might be incorrect in my information, but I think that is what mu local dealer told me.

AFAIK there are three software categories:
  • Firmware radio flash for your setup (standard, stage I, stage II, number of amps/speakers)
  • Naviextras (Maps)
  • BOOM! software (infotainment)
You only pay for MAP updates (after the first three within five years). The firmware flash by your H-D dealer happens only when you upgrade/change your physical BOOM! system and you pay for the dealers time. The infotainment software is free.

From my 2015 BOOM! BOX (Infotainment) manual under Navigation/Updating Database Page 179 which refers to NAVIEXTRAS:
"For CVO models, three navigation map database updates can be downloaded for free over a five year period"

This is for MAPS (Naviextras) .......... the BOOM! BOX Infotainment software updates (controls, radio, CB, media, etc.) will always be available via downloads from the MOCO website so long as they're in biz :D

Well, loaded fingerprint twice now, went step by step and maps failed to load on my USB stick, error says "could not download Texas map"

Guess I'll try at a later date. Not sure what else to do.

ok, I need some help. Finally got the maps to load on my USB, I followed directions explicitly. I am ready to plug USB into head unit, however I moved file to hard drive but did not have to unzip it as instructions said. So, on my computer I have a "Navisync" folder with three files in it; content, license, save and two files; device_checksum.md5 and device_status.ini.

Inside of content folders, there are 11 more folders and each folder has TONS of files in them.

I am not sure if the head unit will be able to read the info in each folder, with my limited computer knowledge, I don't think the folders can be opened by the head unit.

Anyone have any idea what went wrong? Or should I just plug USB into head unit and see what happens? I am afraid of messing up the current maps and GPS with a correct file.

Help!!!

Thanks

At that point I turn the system on to ACC, then wait for the unit to boot up. then plug in the USB and it will read it and then ask you if you want to update I believe or it said there was a update, mine took about 1 hour to down load, then I check the software version and it said the latest.

I hate to say this but I would reformat the USB stick, and redo the fingerprint, download the map then give it another go, when I did mine I followed the instructions from 68 XLCH:

Ok, I was following the directions on the NaviExtras web page. Do not go past the "download and install" instructions.

I went to "HOW-TO-GUIDE: How to download and install an Intercontinental replacement package using a USB Stick?" and that is where the confusion began. Once the update is completed (about 2 hours for me) simply take the USB to the bike and start bike first as reported previously, plug in USB and the head unit will do the rest.

Thanks for all the help, task would have been daunting and almost impossible without all of the contributors turning the tech talk in to English!

Yea I don't think I would have figured it out without the help of the forum, I had no trouble with the boom updates or the dealer updates, but the Navi map was a little convoluted

I did the same as Glenncarp but when I put the stick into the bike nothing happened. Does it take a while for the bike to read the stick? Do you need to open all folders and move contents? Do I need to reformat my stick and how do i do that? Everything went smooth until this point.

Thanks for any help

My stick is formatted to Fat32 already so that's not an issue.

Don't touch the folder, just removed the USB stick and plug it into bike AFTER bike has booted up. I had to download updated three times to get it to work, but went smoothly last time and now updated are complete.

Make sure you format the USB and I actually created another account on NaviExtras in case the original maps file was corrupted on the first account. I had received error notices when I first tried to download the maps,I got a notice that Texas map did not load and it stopped the update. I created a second account just in case the map was the issue, although I highly doubt it.

I'd make sure you do nothing with the USB stick after the download is completed, just take it to the bike and prepare to wait two hours for the update to install. I'd also recommend having a battery tender on so the battery does not quit halfway through the update, I cant see interrupting that process being a good thing.

It's almost like surgery, lol, everything has to be clean

Update to my Previous post
I finished the download and went out to bike turned on accessory waited for system
to boot plugged  in the usb stick it authenticated asked if i wanted to update hit ok and it loaded the new update of maps took about 50 mins make sure you have charger or tender on battery. Now shows NACVO-MY2017   :) :) :)

Also I did not lose any settings or routes that I had already loaded for next week. I will ride it tomorrow to double check everything but all looks GOOD

You were brave to do the update with trip routes for an upcoming ride installed on the bike!!! I am not so confident with HD or its partners software not having some kind of caveats!

I re-updated the stick last night, it only took an hour, not 2 hours like before. I'll try again tonight. Cross your fingers.

Congrats on update. Look in thread "I thought a GPX file was a GPX file" Tons of info on Google Maps and visualizer. Short answer is.no, A converted Google Maps file will ot work in Boom! audio and it creates a file on the bike that cannot be opened or erased. Stuck with Tyre or HD Ride planner to create and import routs

G'Day Y'all,

Thanks very much for the leg work on this one folks. 86 XLCH a special thank you mate (Read I owe you a beer when/if we bump into each other), for simple straigtforward navigable instructions. Did this yesterday with a minmimum of fuss and am now up to date on maps. This is exactly why this forum is so good IMHO. I would surely have spend mucho time swearing unecessarily without the guide if I had ever became aware it existed.

Am yet to test functionality due to attending a family expansion project today (Daughter's water broke at 0300 and Grandson arrived about 1600), but expect to be released by new Grandma for riding activities on the morrow.

Cheers Tom
