2017 Saddlebag Mounting Hardware
« on: September 26, 2016, 11:43:52 PM »

I thought these would be a good idea, has anyone looked into the new mounting hardware and if they will fit pre 2017 models.

I read elsewhere that they will fit.  I think I saw that the kit from HD comes with the lever fasteners plus the clips (with attached nuts) that the fasteners screw into.  I have been thinking about getting a set.

90201540 I believe is the part number for the kit.  Once again, I read this elsewhere and I haven't looked into verifying the fitment.

I just went to buy them to replace my Brukus kit and decided to pass for the $50.  I thought not having the tool with me would make it easier but these are a little bulky.  The Brukus is cleaner install.

They will fit any Rushmore touring model. I just installed a set on my 2014 RK CVO. Easy. They are very well made and far superior to the prior system and the other aftermarket solution I had used. You can appreciate  the price when you use them and see the quality. A well thought out solution, after a prior recall.

Looked at a 2017 loved the lever/bolt that holds saddle  bags on. Does anyone know how hard to it it is to change the older ones over to the new pins.or a harley part number for the new style. Thanks

It's just some bolts, ny-lock nuts, and flat washers.  Check the hardware department.

I put them on my 08 SEUC and they are worth every penny. Much more secure than the twist locks. Speed nuts a breeze to install then twist bolts in and ratchet them tight. Way more secure.
Won't be popped off with screwdriver. I was told that they retrofit baggers all the way back to 93.
Thanks

The advantage to the Harley Kit is that they have a long lever.   The lever is there intentionally so that, when properly positioned downward between 9 & 3 o'clock position,  and the Saddlebag lid is closed, it cannot come undone because the lever would come in contact with the lid stopping it's rotation.     That means that the bag cannot not come loose on long bumpy rides.   The aftermarket kits with the round knobs do not appear to have this safeguard?

WOW .........had no idea saddlebags were a theft item :o! I just ordered a set and then realized I needed to hang on to my twist-locks for use with my saddlebag stand which gets used every time I wash the bike. The wire twist-lock spring on the stand appears to be riveted in place and not easy to remove. If I did remove them ........anyone know where to obtain a pair of the clip nuts other than ordering through H-D(Clip nut part#10400034) :nixweiss:?

Or you could just make your own washing/storing stand and store the twist locks...

Nice set up, with my 14 SGS I just set them on a towel, now with the CVO and no flat bottom I have been wondering if there was a better way then just leaning them against something!!  :cherry:

Thanks Dave but I can't take credit for it.  The feller Vickie and I ride with (Rick and "Skunk Ryder" here on the site) made one for his Skunk's extended bags.  I noted how cool it was and he made me one for Christmas a few years ago.  He didn't glue all the PVC joints on his so he could disassemble for storage.  I hang mine on the wall so glued all the joints.  It works great, I can wash the bags while they are on the stand and with the foam padding, no scratches.  I can also blow dry them fairly easy on the stand.  Works on flat bottom and extended bags.

So I've installed the new Saddlebag lever mounting and am impressed with the quality ...........my saddlebags should not get heisted with this setup :-X. I'll hang onto the old twist-lock hardware to utilize when I mount the saddlebags to my H-D saddlebag stand which uses the older twist-lock to spring clip system to secure the bags to the stand .......so not an issue.

However, was about to order a "Reda 1 Gallon Saddlebag Gas Can" and suddenly realized it wouldn't fit in its intended "back of the saddlebag" position with the new "bulky" lever mounting hardware in the way ::)! Sure, I could leave the old spring clip at the rear of the bag to accommodate the gas can, but I'd rather be more secure. Hopefully Reda will redesign the upper part of the gas can to clear the lever hardware as the new lever system is likely here to stay and Reda won't want to miss out on all future new bike business ;)

when you pay $20 for the bagger bolts, or the off-name do it yourself kits, take a look at the j-bolt.  if you compare that too the j-bolt from the Harley kit, you'll see that the hd kit is much beefier.  for an extra $17, i'm okay with that.

I really like the bolts used on my "17 for a piece of mind the bags cant come loose, but damn they are big and seem to catch on everything.

Bagger Bolts have smaller footprint, doesn't take up so much room in bags.
