2017 M8 fuel milage
« on: October 27, 2016, 04:04:23 PM »

I have a 2017 CVO Street Glide. I've had it for one week today. It only has 350 miles on it. Still not broke in. I made a short run today to visit my son. About 95 miles one way. It was interstate 99% of the time. I ran anywhere from 65-80 mph. I have been reading some post where people were claimimg to get very good mpg on the new bikes. Here are my results as of today. The bike is bone stock and I am 6'-3" and weigh 300#'s Keep in mind it's still not broke in yet, I am thinking the mileage will get better in time.

Looks about right. My 2017 CVO Street Glide has 3800 miles on it and I've been getting 49 to 52 mpg.

Wow.  Might actually need to get off to pee and stretch before you need gas.

Don't want to rain on the parade, but previous stock Harley odometers were generous with the mileage, so it looked like you had covered more mileage than actual.  For accuracy, you might check the bike's odometer against one of those 5-mile-long mileage checks on an interstate, or compare the odo against the GPS mileage.

I set the trip meter to zero and filled the tank before I left. On the return trip I went into the navigation and set it up to record the stats. The navigation works via GPS. I was a doubter til I saw the total mileage on the trip meter and the amount of gals it took to refill the tank. I know the distance to my sons house too. Here are more pics for you non believers...

Starting with model year 2015, The touring models seem to have been improved with accurate speedos from the factory.  My 2015 FLHTK was dead-nuts on when I checked it against my Garmin and phone gps.  Not that the new ones shouldn't be confirmed too, but I hope Harley didn't digress here.

Didn't accuse you of anything; just saying HD odometers weren't that accurate.  It would be nice if the M8 is more efficient along with the other improvements.

After 1400 miles, my 2017 CVO Limited when traveling 70-80 mph is averaging 42 mpg.  Bone stock, flat Florida roads (interstates) mostly.  Somewhere around 3k to 5k miles on this bike I expect the mileage to be more representative, based on past experience with other new Harleys.  At speeds less than 70 mph mileage is a bit better, 44 or so.

Am checking fuel receipts vs actual mileage on the odometer, and am very pleased to get anything over 40 mpg based on experience with my 110s which were gas hogs.

Dave, curious at to whether you were travelling at posted speeds most of the time or going perhaps 7-10 over posted limits? I typically travel over posted limits and tend to pay for it in fuel consumption.

On a related note, what is the recommended octane fuel for the 2017 M-8's?  The reason I ask is that the combination of the four valve head and twin sparkplugs should reduce the octane requirement versus the old engines.  Smaller chambers and twin plugs mean a much faster burn.

Owner's manual states 91 octane same as with the TC.  I know 91 is available in parts of the country but around here and for 000s of miles around our options are 87, 89 or 93 so I always select 93.

Simon, yea over the posted speeds.  Cruise set with speedometer at 80mph, if any thing like all my others that really means 77 mph.

I always run the highest grade I can find and non ethanol too if it's available. If not I use an additive to combat the effects of ethanol. I am fortunate that there is a place near me that has 91 octane/non ethanol, Only place I but locally. It's all different when traveling.

I would recommend confirming that with a GPS based speed reading.  Like I said above, the new ones seem to be more accurate, so there's no "cushion" between the speedometer and radar readings.  I bet you will find that 80 means 79-81...

There are apps that can use your phone for a quick reading and comparison.  I use "GPS Test" on android.  I also use a Garmin z590 now, as well.

I guess I will have to check the accuracy of the speedometer.  Could be why 80 is a bit under 3000 rpm on this and all my other CVO's 80 mph is right at 3000 rpm.  Seems the M8 is 150~200 rpm lower at 80.

The speedo on my 2017 107 was only 1% fast on the dyno wheel. Read 101 at 100 MPH.
All of the previous years were 5-7%. I would usually add about 50 points to the cal number to correct it. This would also slow the odometer down too reducing the fuel milage calc as well. I have had to explain this more than once after dyno tuning bikes and the customers report a slight loss in fuel economy after I slowed their speedo and odometers down by 6%. In theory, with the 2017 odometer being less generous, the fuel economy gap should be even greater between the 8 valve and the Twin Cam if a person was using both odometers uncalibrated to calc the fuel burn.

I have always gotten horrible gas mileage due to my riding style never getting over 33-35 mpg on any of my bikes but even with the new bile not being broken in yet with only 1000 miles I got almost 39 mpg today and I was running pretty hard. I also checked speedo against GPOS and it was dead on. Took mileage with odo divided by gas

I never knew that the CVO had that screen available.  Can you tell me how to get to that screen?  Thanks!

+1 please.  I assume it's under the Nav section, but I don't play with the puter when I'm near the bike.  I'm riding or dreaming of riding...

I just went through my whole nav and setup screens and found nothing.  Mine is a 2015 CVO SG.  Is this something only found on the 2017 models?

when the map is on you push the "data" on the bottom right side and you can change that data to speed. I assumed that came from the GPS? Am i wrong?

when the map is on you push the "data" on the bottom right side and you can change that data to speed. I assumed that came from the GPS? Am i wrong?
Yes, that is wrong.  It displays the speed from the same source as the speedo on the dash, that being the speed sensor.

While the GPS could display GPS calculated speed easy enough, it doesn't.  They didn't add that capability to the user interface.  And the vehicle cannot loose it's speed display just because you are in a tunnel or in the urban jungle.

You are correct. Speedo and GPS screen come from the same source, VSS. They will read identical numbers until 120 MPH. After that the analog hits the peg and the digital continues to rise. I have seen 126 MPH on the digital.   ;D

That was on asphault sitting straight up racing racing my buddy on this 190 HP monster. After 3 miles I was in front. I wear him out every time.
That bike will do a legit 150, but not all day.  I can sit on 120 for miles. ;D

Just over 500 miles on the bike.  It had a full tank when I bought it so I didn't calculate that one, but the next two top offs showed 41.52 and 41.29. Not too bad for bone stock, but not enough mileage yet to trend it.
