2014 CVO Limited 49MM Legend Axeo Front Fork Cartridge Install
« on: December 03, 2016, 05:55:29 PM »

I have 16,000 miles on my 2014 CVO Limited and the original tires are off to be replaced with Michelin Commanders as the old are cupped badly and well worn.

Since the 2017's came with an updated front suspension from the MOCO I decided to install the Legend Axeo's..  They were purchased from Mark at MandM Cycle in Sandusky, Ohio for $674 shipped a few months ago..

Decided why the front tire was off and I didn't want to buy a new 2017 Limited so the Axeo's were purchased.

I just have a jack and not a lift, I loosen calipre bolts and front axle nut while the bike is still on the ground.

You do not have to remove the outer fairing.  You have to remove the lower inner dash panel around the ignition switch.  Whether than removing the ignition key cylinder, I took both bolts out of the fuel tank console and lifted it up so I could safely remove the lower dash panel as the panel is notched around the key switch.

Then remove the calipres, tire, front fender.  This is what you have.

There are three 1/4" or 3/16" allen pinch bolts that hold the fork on each side to the triple tree.  One is in the upper and 2 in the lower tree.  You need a 12MM long allen (about 3" long) to "break" loose the lower fork leg bolt while it is still in the bike using the bike as a vice.  The lower leg will want to turn when doing this so I put a scew driver in a fork calipre bolt hole for leverage and to keep lower leg from spinning.

Then you loosen the one upper and 2 lower pinch bolts and slide fork down to just above the bottom tree and then tighten lower pinch bolts again.  Take a 19MM allen (same as 3/4" bolt I believe) and loosen the upper fork cap again using the bike as a vice.

You can then slide the leg down and off the bike.

Here is the 2 lower fork pinch bolts just to the right of the steel brake line.

Per Legends instructions, I then removed the lower leg 12MM bolt (the drain washer stayed up in the leg) and drained the leg and then pumped a few times to get remaining oil out.

Use the 19MM allen to remove the upper cap (hold down on it while turning as it is under light spring pressure).  You will then remove a small washer, 12" spring, and a
6-7" hollow tube.  You can then turn fork up side down and the dampner rod and another spring will come out of the bottom.

You do not have to seperate the upper to lower fork legs to install the axeo's..  Both my fork internals were the same (did not have a cartridge in one side) so I did not use the lower fork cup that came in the kit..  Both fork legs had the lower cups in them.

I took the Legend cartridges and tightened the adjuster 6 turns and locked the set screw to the flat on the shaft.  8 turns is what the chart said but didn't want a stiff ride so I hope 6 turns is ok for me.

Brake cleaned the insides of the fork legs.  Set the fork vertical (upper tube collapsed into lower)and put the supplied spring down the tube and then slid the Legend cartridge down the tube and seating it in the lower cup.  Put a new washer on the 12MM bolt (after removing old washer from leg) and tightened to 30 ft # per Legend. Have to put a screw driver thru calipre leg hole for leverage to tighten.

Measured 8 ounces of supplied oil and slowly put down fork tube.  Slowly pumped cartridge up and down to get air out.  You then raise upper fork tube up to the threaded cap attached to the Legend Cartridge and thread the tube into the cap.  No compression is needed to do this-threads easily.  The Legend cap hex is 1 3/8" so I used a box end wrench to tighten as best I could on the floor until I got fork into the bike tree and tightened it better using the bike as a vice again.  It is supposed to be torqued 60 FT #..  I just tightened it the best I could as the shoulder on the Legend hex is not that tall for leverage.

When reinstalling the forks, there is no stop on how far to raise the fork up before tightening pinch bolts.  Each fork leg has to be the same height for the axle to go thru..  I just made a mental reference of height before initial removal.
The pinch bolts torque 14-18 ft #'s..

If you want to replace the fork seals or lower upper leg bushings or have a Harley Cartridge in one side, you need to seperate the forks.  Hope I don't have a seal leakage problem as I did not do-replace seals.

The old fork oil was nasty for 16,000 miles-looked like primary fluid (both legs fork oil looked the same)..

I have no pictures of the disassembly/assembly of forks.

This is not a hard job if you have the right tools and basic mechanical knowledge.  The way I did it might not be the best way but that's how I did it.

Winter coming to Ohio so I won't know if it was a good decision for 3-4 months at best.  I know the quality of the parts I put in were leaps above on the cheaply made parts I took out.

It will be hard to tell how well the suspension is as I am replacing well worn tires at the same time.

Update-
I was looking on Legends website and looked at the website instructions.  The website instructions stated preload per rider/passenger weight was from 0-3 turns and the fluid amount was 11.5 ounces.

My instructions that came with the kit was 0-24 turns for preload based on weight and stated 8 ounces per fork leg.

I spoke with Legend and stated mine were built before July of this year and had the correct instructions.  The current Axeo's have a spring that is 1" either shorter or longer than the ones I installed thus the different settings.  Do not know why that would effect the oil amount.

Again, I have not ridden with the new Axeo's or tires.  I know that if I grab the front brake and work the suspension up and down the headlight doesn't bob down to the front fender with the Axeo's.  Thats all I have to go by thus far.

Boatman,

What are the changes to the 2017 front end?  I started reading your very excellent and detailed post but w/o knowing how the 2014-2016 has been improved, i cannot appreciate your changes.

Bigger forks?

By the way, what tires are you going to run?

With the introduction of the Rushmore bikes from 14-16 the front forks went from 41MM to 49MM in size.

With the 17's, they put valving in the forks that better contol rebound/compression that better keeps the front tire on the road.

I put on Michelin Commander II's and took off the original Harley branded Dunlop tires.  Hope this helps.

Boatman,

Yes it does.  I was thinking the valving was also upgraded in the 14-16s.  I had a 2012 RGU, and now a 2016 CVOSG.  The 2016 has a much firmer front end.  So, the valving has improved again, if I understand you?  Mine seems a bit harsh, that is why I ask.

Thanks

There is no "real" valving in the 14-16's..  Look on youtube and you can see valving on the 17's..  Your 16 may ride "harsher" due to the increase in fork diameter from 41MM to 49MM..

Below is what our 14-16 forks look like.  I took out items 3 (washer), 8 (spring), 10 (spring collar), 17 (dampner tube), 18 (spring), 19 (fork cap) and replaced them with Legend cartridges.

The valving you speak of is done in the lowly #17 dampner tube.  The 2017's actually have valving.

In my opinion the front end on my 15 was an improvement over the front end on the 12 I traded for it, and the 13 King I have.

Traded the 15 for the 17 CVO, and the front is way better than the 15.  Much less dive when on the brakes, and stays planted in hard corners much better.

Really need to do something to improve the front end of my CVO King.

Thanks again Boatman.  Doing this yourself is a good upgrade. The labor for someone like me taking in to a dealer/indy would be 7+ hours?

FLSTFI, I don't get any diving on the SG, but it just hits fairly hard.  Much better set up than the 2012 RGU.

How is the overall ride quality?

Thank you both.
