Starting problems sometimes
« on: January 15, 2017, 04:00:17 PM »

Ok have a 2015 CVO RG. Sometimes when i go to start it really drags then starts rite up. Kinda like the battery is low. But then other times it cranks rite over like normal. Battery is 2 yrs old. I haven't had the battery tested to see if its bad or just weak. Or could it be the starter going bad or the compression releases..??

Unless you've added some electrical accessories or had other electrical work done, it's a greater than 99% probability the battery is your problem. Clean and tighten the connections. If the problem persists, have the battery tested for cold cranking capacity.

I went thru the same thing with mine in November. Bike was 2yr old in Sept so battery was not that old. Replaced with Battery Mart unit vs HD for convenience. Battery Mart shipped to my door and I didn't have to drive 30 miles to HD store.
Afterwards I still had the occasional time where it just sort of "dragged" then spun on over and started.
In the mean time I changed FOB's as the ring on the one I was using was rusting and the other one was still new. No more dragging when starting so a couple weeks later I got out the old fob and presto occasional dragging returned. Put the questionable fob in metallic package my bridge pass came with to isolate it and went back to the other fob and have not had a "drag" since, now about 2 months. Also my radio stays on the station I used last now and does not go back to lowest AM setting as it was on the other fob regardless of what channel I used last it was always on AM580 when I started the bike next time. Now all is well.

So it was your key FOB causing the problem.

Could be the fob, could be the battery.  I had to replace my battery this past fall, and the bike was just over a year old.
Sometimes they last, sometimes they don't.  I keep a tender on my full time now.

How could the key FOB cause this to happen.

I have the same bike which had the same symptoms even when kept on the battery tender. My battery was just replaced under warranty.

Mine had the same problem and a new battery for the bike fixed it.

Well I'm out of warranty so gonna have to buy new one.  I'm gonna take tomorrrow and have tested.

When in doubt the first step should be to check all battery connections (at the battery and the starter).  If clean and tight, with no voltage drop across any of the connections, then have the battery load tested.  Starting batteries, bike or car, seem to have a much wider range of service life these days (in my opinion due to excessive cost cutting in the production processes).  Some might fail in one year, some might fail in three or four years, and the really good ones might last six or more years.  It's a crap shoot.

As for the posts about the key fobs, I don't doubt the veracity of those members but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how a fob whose only function is to turn off the security system could possibly affect engine cranking.  I'd love to see someone explain exactly how that happens.  The security system is either off or on, and once it's off the engine should crank normally.  Unless of course Harley has found a way to screw up that old simple technology. :nixweiss:

Wouldn't impact the original poster's question but I did troubleshoot an aftermarket system once that shut off fuel without shutting off the starter.

No way is the key fob the problem. Replace the battery.
