Brake pads
« on: February 10, 2017, 01:02:30 PM »

Looking at changing my pads on my '05 SEEG and was wondering if there are options on pads like there are on auto pads.

I always use OEM Harley Pads.   There are aftermarkets and different compositions out there but I have found if you want the best balance between Noise, Fade, Braking Power and Longevity,  OEM is always best.

Not trying to be a :smartass: :wiseguy: but... How can you make a comparison if you have always used OEM? :confused5:

For the reasons you state you stick to OEM are the reasons I switched from OEM.... much better products in the aftermarket IMO... and yes, I can make a comparison since my bike came stock w/OEM and I changed from them before they were needed.

Really hard to be objective when you only use one product. I have used Harley, EDC and currently Lyndall. I think Lyndall, to me, are the best for my use. No noise, very very minimal dust and cost is competitive.
I have in this period used them on OE rotors, Floating Renegade Rotors and polished OE rotors. The Lyndall just work better. AND I had a set that wore from inside to out excessively. I showed them to the Lyndall guy at Daytona, He told me I only had one piston working correctly, the other was "lazy" and handed me a complete set of new pads for the bike. I objected and said if it is the bikes fault then I was OK. He would not hear it and insisted I replace all the pads and please fix the caliper when I got home.
He was correct regarding the partially seized piston. That to me was above and beyond customer service and I will always be appreciative and use his product.

You don't get "options" from Harley, but there are many such options in the aftermarket.  The original pads on my SEEG were nothing to write home about in terms of performance, but they were adequate.  However, they coated the wheels and other parts with a huge amount of nasty black residue/dust from day one and it didn't improve with more miles.  I changed those pads long before they were worn out and went with the Lyndall Z+ pads.  The heavy accumulation of black dust was eliminated, the brake performance was much more linear and controllable, and they were and still are quiet.  Furthermore, the pads don't wear grooves in the rotors like the stock pads.  I've never had reason to consider trying something else.

EBC's for me too. The HH sets.

same here, I've used the Lyndall offering in the past and they work well also, but I personally prefer the EBC for the linear feel when braking.

I didn't say this in my original post, but this is one of my key reasons for EBC constant steady consistent feel. I use HH pads and they wear a little quicker but they are constant and consistent.

My stock pads in front have squealed from day one during slow speed stops on my 2015.  Had them replaced when tire was replaced with stock pads but same result.  Guess I'm going to have to try aftermarket before they are worn out this time,  Have not had any issues with stopping strength or wheel build up but I wash my wheels frequently.  Would the Lyndall be best choice to reduce noise?

I was gonna say that looking at this pretty limited set of demographics of who's running what pads that guys from hills areas run the EBCs and flatlanders run Lyndalls but fired00d went and wrecked that comparison. :)

Well, with the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway for my backyard, perhaps I should be looking @ EBCs.

I've been running the EBC Kevlar organics on the floating rotors as they eat the rotors less than anything else I've tried.  They make slightly more dust and have slightly less stopping power vs. some of the other types.  I'm more keen on tires than brakes.  Personally I'd rather have good brakes and great tires than the other way around.

I don't live there, it's not in my backyard but I've been going for 35 years twice a year long before the charahala was even in existence ABC went with me

I would skip Z+ and go to the Gold+. z+ would fade when we sometimes. Does not happen with Gold and Gold is still rotor friendly

Gold is what I use found there's very low residue/dust no breaking noise and yes rotor friendly also price friendly!

I put Lyndal on with first tire change. I was told they were the best and have not a reason to try any other. With the high recommendations I'm sure you can't go wrong with EBC either. Yes these brands cost twice as much and some may wear out a little sooner than OEM pads but considering the improved performance, less brake dust and the fact they are easier on the rotors, they are well worth it. If I had to worry about spending an extra 25 or 50 bucks for a superior brake pad I would have never bought a CVO in the first place.
