Shifter Shaft Lever Spring broken ???????
« on: February 20, 2017, 04:49:32 AM »

fired up my FXSTSSE 2 for a ride and when I tried to select first.... fckn nothing.
jumped off and found that the gear lever just flopped back and forth freely.
a couple of people have suggested it might be a broken spring.
rang our 2 Harley shops, around the $800 AU to replace the spring.
Does this require clutch and gearbox removal to get to the spring?
Any special tools etc required ?
Maybe youtube would have some info.
thanks boys
bike has done 29500 km's

It is much more common for the external shift linkage to strip out somewhere.

Are you sure it's not stripped splines on the lever?   That's pretty common....

I helped my father in law do this to his bike and it is a gigantic pain in the ass. $3 part and a LOT of labor. If you are not comfortable completely gutting the transmission, best to let a shop do it.

But like Heat Wave said, the shaft - or if you are extremely lucky the shift lever, strip out sometimes and that is easy to check.

Good luck.

thanks for the replies boys.
checked the link, spline was tight.
pretty sure it's internal.
been told it could be 6-8 hours labour.
might be a job for the Harley Stealers

It's a much bigger job than it should be, especially for anyone without the proper tools and facilities like a nice lift table.  Having a pro do it would be my choice, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to let a Harley dealership bend you over and have their way with you.  Get a firm estimate from the dealership, then see what the local independent shops will charge to do the same thing.

not a broken spring, but, surprise surprise HD quality failure.
the weld around the shaft only held about 60 ', not the 360 '
mechanic said " that he has seen this problem a few times "

35081-06 Shifter Mechanism has been put in, but I've found that it is impossible to get neutral and changing gears seems a little harder ( not as smooth ). Any ideas ?

Did you adjust the clutch & primary chain yet? Overfilling the primary will do this too.

I did bleed the clutch ( I thought the mechanic would of done this )
what I did notice was a small blockage, then a flow of black/brown chit before clear oil flowed.
it seemed to fix the problem.
thanks boys
