Another heavily damaged torque curve repaired!
« on: March 05, 2017, 01:33:33 PM »

I get a call from a California man with a 2014 103 Limited. Owner says he just payed big money for a new build and dyno tune. Problem is, his milage is terrible, it's pinging real bad and his ears are ringing.

Here's the build sheet.
2014 103 Limited.
V+H Power Duals, Hi Output mufflers. V+H AC
10.5 pistons, ported heads, modified TB.
S+S 583 easy start
dyno tuned with Power Commander 5.

I get him on the schedule and he shows up right on time. I push it straight into the dyno room for a look at what's going on. I have seen some real bad torque curves, but this one has a torque ditch! I later find out this mess was done in my own backyard! I recommended a new exhaust and a tune. So it's off to the landfill with the bling exhaust and the pretend a tuner. Installed a DX Pipe and our 4.0 Slash mufflers with a 1.75 baffle. Reconnected the 02 sensors. Back into the dyno room for a tuning session with TTS. It was like a can of fix a flat! Torque curve blew up to 100 FT pounds at 2000 RPM, 25 FT pound gain at 2500! 113 TQ at 3000 RPM. 95 HP and 113 TQ peak. No more power leaks.

Special thanks to Richard from So Cal for riding with a Fullsac!

I think it was 2010, a tuner showed me what my Hi-Outputs did compared to a fullsac core.

I was running a 09 head pipe with the cat cut out and pipe welded back together.

Needless to say, I got home and ordered Fullsac cores, got the bike refunded.  I not used anything but fullsac since,  Thats four of the wife's bikes and five for me.

I try to tell people about how bad the Hi-outputs are.  Sound great perform like crap.  90% do not listen.

It's amazing how many people will sacrifice performance for "sound".  :nixweiss:

The majority of Harley owners don't prioritize performance. V+H understands this. They build products targeted towards the largest group of owners, the loud and slow crowd. (Opposite of JCZ and his crew.) Its all about the facade of speed and what they and others think is cool. I'm glad they are not "really" in the performance business. Because if I sell 1 header, they sell 100. If they wanted that smaller slice of the pie they certainly have the resource's to take it. Thankfully they don't need the crumbs.

And thankfully those of us that care about performance more than noise have somebody like you.

Thanks a bunch Steve.....for what you do...specifically for the CVO models!   :2vrolijk_21:

Tell the rest of the story......the weld broke on the bracket and V&H wouldn't stand behind it because the receipt was a year and a couple of weeks old....even though I only rode it for a couple of weeks out of that year (and it only had a couple hundred miles on the speedometer from when the V&H was put on until the weld broke.  POS....that's what V&H is! >:(

I don't believe Steve was making exhausts or baffles for CVOs back in 04.  Justayinzall....  Aside from all of that Terry....I've smartened up a bit....lessons learned from experience.  :nixweiss:

Sorry JC I was only teasing and I didn't know the rest of the story. Sorry you had such a bad experience. I agree Fullsac seems to be a great way to go especially if you can go there to get your system done. I only remember you had that pipe as I could hear you in the distance when you were leading one of your rides we went on with you.

I had the fullsak 2 inch baffle in the cvo slip ons and a tts tuner on my 09 cvo rg and my bike sounded like a gold wing. I threw those slip ons in the garbage and got the ho v and h 4.5 inch and now that bike is a beast and it sounds like one also. I did a lil tweaking on the tts and now it is perfect.

100's of folks have done the Fulsac set up just like you did and have had nothing but EXCELLENT RESULTS!!!

Just like Mr. D mention, DON'T confuse LOUD for POWER!!!!

But if your happy that's what counts.

More than once I have seen the poor torque curve of Vance and Hines Hi-outrputs and the 4.5 by them.  Kills the torque below 3200 rpm, which is where most ride.

90% of the people are more concerned with the sound, than the usable power.

Fullsac sound nothing like a Goldwing!  They sound nice on the interstate and bark a bit while getting on it.
