What Model Ohlins rear shocks are you using on you SESG
« on: March 13, 2017, 08:36:01 PM »

I want to change the rear shocks on my 2016 SESG, I decide I want to go with the Ohlins, but what model are you using? then there are 12in and 13in? its a little confusing, any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated---Thanks

Since you have a StreetGlide which is lowered, you should run the 12" Ohlins. I have an Ultra and am running the 13" Ohlins.

But it looks like a lot of guys are running the 13" on them say they get a better ride  :nixweiss:

to keep things the same, run the 12''.  now, if ride height is not an issue for you, then by all means, go with the 13''.  the street glide has the same front suspension that an ultra has, it is not shorter.  that will give you an extra inch of clearance, extra lean angle, and extra travel in the shocks for a more comfortable ride.

I have short legs.  I could not (comfortably) run the 13'' so I would have to go with the 12''.

Running the 13" on my 11 with the remote reservoirs.   Running the cartridges in the front as well.  rides great BSR couldn't be any happier with the quality of the ride.

I put the 13 inch on my Roadglide (came with 12 inch) and you really can't tell by looking at it but I live the additional ground clearance. On my Streetglide I have stayed with the stock 12 inch and I grind those boards like crazy!

I have the HD-159 Ohlins on my CVO Road King.  Like the Street glide the rear is lowered one inch in the rear from the factory but front is stock hight.

I put the 13 inch on vice the 12 when I did the ohlins.  The inch of extra travel means the ride is better.  Also as other have posted more lean angle.  If you push it in the curves that is nice to have.

I suggest if foot reach is not an issue go 13 inch, if vertically challenged go with the 12.  Once set right the Ohlins are great.

Running the 3-3 which is also called  159 like Dave. 13" on my RGU. I was confused looking at Howard's website because of Dave's use of the HD number. Love them.

I'm running the ones from Howard too. Love 'em! Can't wait to do the fronts as well.

Thanks for all the help, so looks like I have to decide from 12" or 13" and 159's or HD772 or HD774 which are the 12" and 13" in the black line series, which from what I can tell looks like they built the same, looks like I will have to call Howard!

Maybe you guys can help me out here.

I don't have a CVO, but I have an 07  RK with a 124" S&S motor (so I can keep up with you guys LOL)

I built the motor & tranny myself.

I do have an Ohlin shock question.  I only ride single & weigh 150.

I have Progressive monotubes in the front that I love, & I put a set of Ohlin HD-159 that I got from Howard on the back.  It rides great most of the time, but those sharp expansion bumps kill me every time.

I can't seem to find a sweet spot with those shocks.  Does it sound like I have them set up wrong??

Welcome to the forum.

I too have the 3-3's from Howard, and you need to set the sag and then make small adjustments from there to the spring pre-load. Set the rebound to about 15-17 clicks from minimum, then fine tune it from there. It took me a long time to get them close to being right. Howard would have included paper instructions, or if not, I'd suggest searching Youtube- I believe Progressive Suspension did a clip about how to set sag.

I'd try all that first before calling Howard and asking him.

I own a SESG15 and just replaced the rear shocks by a pair of Ohlins HD774 S36DR1L Blackline 12". Mounted with special springs rated 27 nm provided by PFP Racing Ohlins France.

The PFP team was there at Eurofestival in Grimaud. Cool guys, enthusiast about their product and very professional. We have tested different spring rates, 25, 27, 29. 27 was the more appropriate for me and for my friends.

Not cheap, but it's really day & night. Just a totally new bike and a much more enjoyable experience.

I'm 5.11" 185lbs and I would say that I have average riding skills. I feel much more in safety with
these new shocks.

Now the front end deserves the front kit FKC102 from Ohlins.

Greetings   Lolo
