Face riding protection
« on: March 14, 2017, 10:48:23 AM »

Hello all,

Thought I would check with folks on the site on what they are using for face protection, those using a half or 3/4 helmet.

Nose always seems to get wind/sun burned even when using 50 spf.

I have used shampa products in the past and currently for du rags.

http://www.schampa.com/facefit-facemask/

http://www.schampa.com/product/stretch-facemask/

They have these products, I will be giving them a try, and oh for warm weather riding, I already use there products for cold weather.

Cheers!

I use this:  Original Turtle Fur Fleece - Shellaclava, Heavyweight Balaclava

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016RPHBI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thin enough on top to allow a helmet to fit over it, thicker over the chin and neck area for warmth. Can be positioned over your nose. Like it a lot.

I've used Turtle Fur in the past, really works well up here in Washington State during the spring and fall.

I have a 1/2 helmet and use a similar piece as above. I took a toboggan and cut the top off for those days I just want to keep my neck warm. I pull it over my head and it will cover my ears as well. I haven't worn anything to prevent sun burn. My wife and I just use sun block and reapply when we stop.

.......... what they are using for face protection, .......oh for warm weather riding......

http://buffusa.com/shop-buff/men/sun-protection-featured.html

Available at most outdoors/hiking stores such as Cabela's.  Used one for years to keep the sun from burning the back of my neck between helmet and jacket.  Light enough to wear in very warm conditions. I tested it once in Death Valley at 115 f in the blazing sun and no burn  :2vrolijk_21:

Oh, if you are looking at them in the store be very careful to ensure it states UV protection on the package. The non UV protection ones look almost identical.  You will burn thru those ones.  I tested one of those as well.     ::)

Like others have said - a full face helmet.  I have an HJC modular and wear it exclusively, winter and summer.  Even convinced my co-rider a few years and she protested mightily but now loves her's also.  I know, I know many will say they are way too hot but that has not been my experience.  When it's hot it's hot no matter what helmet you have.  Before when I wore a half and then a three quarter helmet I'd get sunburn, windburn and my face would feel like leather in the summer heat.  With the modular with an internal sun shield I never use sunblock except maybe on the back of my neck occasionally and never had any problems.  Personally I would not ride without my modular helmet.  It's all in what you get used to imo.

I live in Fl, sun shines 300 days a year here. I'd look kinda silly wearing a balaclava in 95 degree heat.

I use Neutrogena spray on sun block. I have tattoos on both arms and I make sure to protect them when the sun it out. They make SPF 50, 70 and 100. It sprays on like powder, no stickiness and it smells nice. It does not run into your eyes when you sweat. Stuff is marginally more $$ that Coppertone, but it is top notch for applying many times a day and not leaving hands like you dipped them in a bucket of petroleum jelly!
