Protective coating for fairings
« on: July 23, 2007, 09:13:57 PM »

Hey everybody,
Last year at biketoberfest in Daytona I saw an '06 Autum Haze sitting along Beach st. And what I noticed on this bike is it had a clear protective layer of film on the fairing much like the one that comes from the factory on the side covers. What I need to know is where do you get this stuff? Is it available from the dealer? And can it be removed easily?
Planning a trip to the Rockies and looking to protect my fairing.

3M makes a paint protection film that is used on many high-end cars. There are also some companies that make kits for motorcycles. I would do a web search for "motorcycle paint protection film kit".

A couple of people have done it to their bikes on this site.  Do a search on this site and it should show up.  Someone with more computer savy than me will probably provide a link to it.  Like Chief said, 3M is the maker.

Nothin personal here to anyone involved, but who're are you saving the finish for ?  The next guy ?  You're the one that paid MSRP - - -OR HIGHER, you get to enjoy the new paint not the guy who buys it three or four years from now for 2/3rds what you paid.

Do any of you have clear plastic slipcovers on the furniture in the " front room " ?

This was the cheapest I found awhile back.  At the bottom where you select to order be sure and choose 3m from the "select film" option.  Complete bike kit for an E Glide just under $125.00 before any tax or shipping.

3M makes clear packing tape for just over a buck a roll from Staples.

Can't look any worse than the vinyl chit.

Mitsubishi talked wifey into having it put on the nose of her hotrod Eclipse GTS Spyder Convertible when we bought it without my knowledge. I took it back as soon as she drove in the damn driveway and made em take it off and refund the money.

I have a few really deep chunks out of my fairing from this trip
If if had this stuff on it might have saved my paint. I dunno

Answer me this Scot, Does Roger's saddlebag look better now than before his date with destiny ?  If it does I rest my case.

I have to say, I totally agree with Big B on this one.  I have spent half of my life trying to take care of things that I end up damn near giving away!  I am currently selling two '04 Suzuki V-Stroms.  One has 1,400 mi. on it, the other 2,100.  -The book value is almost half of what I paid for these things.  By taking extraordinary care and the low milage, the blue book says I can add 10 to 15 percent to the average retail price.  - :bananarock:
Whoopii!!  Between my last two CVO Ultras I paid cash for a new one, and a beautiful 2000 Ultra with only 17,000 mi. disappeared along the way!  I've had 25 new bikes, and am sincerely hoping my new one will last as long as I do.  It's depressing to realize how far planned obsolesence has effected our society.  -So you can buy your protective fairing coatings.  -Maybe save a couple dings.  In the end you've spent time and effort for the next guy, who will pay a fraction of what you have.  -"Book value".  -That is, unless you really plan to keep your bike forever.  -Retail Steve

Brian
You have a valid point
Ask rog what the difference would have been without it
I have no idea
As for my fairing
I'm guessing it'll cost me about what the coating would have cost on paint
Maybe that's ok

Some folks want to keep their stuff looking new for them not for the next guy

It's just a decision each of us makes.  It seems to be fine in my eyes, and being a lazy dog, squirting some Plexus on the stuff and wiping it down with a microfibre towel works for me.

If anyone is interested here's the thread for the stuff being installed. http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=12208.0

B B,

When I bought my first new car, I went to K-Mart and bought floor mats to go on top of the factory floor mats. How like them grits? And I bought fuzzy seat covers too. So there.  ;D

Thanks for the links guys, I have the kit on the way.
As for the reasons why, I guess it just makes me feel better. I really don't look at it as saving it for the next guy, as much as I look at it as saving it for me. I want my bike to look as good as possible while I  still own it. And that may be a while. I still own my '71 corvette and my '76 Kawasaki kz900 ltd. And btw they still look good.

why not just ask the dealer not to uncrate it and leave it in the box. The H-D shipping crates have a cutout on one end you can look in through

This is great!
Brian is back!
That dry sense of humor.
That, "I'm sending a zinger their way and wonder if they can figure that one out" attitude.
And if they don't I don't give a rats a$$.

We been missing you buddy!
Glad your back!

Well I think I may have figured the zingers that have been thrown my way. And I realize that there are people that don't take measures or feel that they are necessary to protect their investments and or purchases from the elements. Much like a bird don't build a roof over its nest. Its brain is not wired to think like that.
Nothing personal B.B.

The protective film is quite popular with the sport touring crowd ( BMW / Yamaha FJR )  not a bad way to keep your paint preserved on long trips .  To me it isn't about re-sale as much as pride in your ride

hdhiwayman,
Whatever I think or don't think about a particular subject should not be construed to be targeted at either the individual who started the thread or perhaps the person who defends/denigrates a subject the most, but rather just my personal feelings on the subject. I think that has come through in the 4,656 posts I've made. My feelings on this particular subject are strong I admit, but anyone who knows me and knows my motorcycles also knows that even the slightest hint that I don't care for them is not only off the mark, but borders on a personal insult. I have been involved in this thing we call the " Biker Lifestyle " at every level and in almost every capacity short of professional racer for 40 years. The paint / finish of every single one of my motorcycles was of paramount importance to me in choosing either a factory built vehicle or in custom building one. I have sitting on my desk in front of me a trophy for Best Paint won at a Statewide Motorcycle show in Maine. I cherish that trophy because I put in excess of 100 hours of labor in to welding, grinding, sanding and painting every single square inch of the frame, fenders, gas tank and wheels. I have always favored paint schemes that draw even the casual observer into the vehicle so that they might take note of all of the small details I incorporate into my vehicles. I have won Best of Show at Bike shows here in California as well as People's Choice awards both here and in Maine. In short, I think I am qualified to state what does and does not belong on a motorcycle from the standpoint of what looks good. My point in posting on this thread while admitedly sarcastic was also to perhaps alert the unsuspecting to the fact that while this product may well indeed protect your pride and joy from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, it does not look good.
