What are your ride temp limits?
« on: November 17, 2007, 10:52:09 AM »

With winter encroaching, I was wondering what the temp tolerance is for my peers?

I set off on a 450 mile ride for Daytona in 2004 with slush on the ground and temps hovering around 30. I was dressed warm enough and the ride was quite nice. I did run into carb icing problems that were a pain in the neck, but I was Ok.

Any time there's ice on the ground it's to cold.  Other than that......good to go.

=/> 40 degrees. Don't do to much riding after chemicals have been applied to the road until we get some good rain to wash/clean the roads off. Always have the tight sphincter concerns about going around a curve and one of the salt/sand trucks decided to stop earlier w/o closing the chute. Which will leave a big pile of salt/sand in the middle of the road. :nervous:

As long a it's not icy I've ridden in the low teens with gerbing heated clothing, to me it not about temp but road conditions.

Your gloves must be better than mine Dave.  Below the mid to upper 20s my gloves stop keeping up.  Rest of me is fine.  Was hoping the new heated grips addition might give the gloves enough of a boost to extend their range a bit.

http://www.gerbing.com/

Take a look at gerbing then you can decide whats to cold.  Wife doesn't like it in the low twenties, me I'm a big guy with lots of insulation  so with the heated clothing (I have one of there old Ultimate jacket and pants) I rarely turn it more than half way up even in the low teens.  I prefer the heated grips(when they work, always carry heated gloves though) to the heated gloves.  Heated gloves are to bulky for me, I wear glove liners REI or Patagonia and a HD rain glove.

I've got their newer less bulky heated glove.  If you've got their prior model that was bulkier that might be the difference.  Bulkier glove but more elements in it.

I've got the latest model Gerbings gloves, they are not near as bulky as the old ones BUT they are not as warm either. I put my Nolan full face w/ wind stop (better find yours AJ), Gerbing heated liner, gloves, heavy leathers and I'm good to about 30. Below that it is only my fingers that get cold. (must be dry though, no white chit or ice for me)

Long Johns below 40, and add chaps below 30. Have Gerbing G3's but never tried them. Still kinda old school and just bundle up the layers. Will ride into the teens. But don't usually plan any long trips in the winter. No snow or ice thank you. Wear the little helmet year round, and add fleece headband for the ears below 30. Bikes are aways up throughout the winter. Keep them on Battery Tenders year round. ;)

I enjoy the 32ish temp... we have to be careful up here with all the salt that they throw on the road.

As soon as the salters come out, bike gets stored.

Cold + salt = stop

Spring + rains = start

Except for those odd days in the middle of winter when it is dry and 60

Depends if I'm going or coming - that doesn't sound right  :nixweiss: - but when it gets down to the mid 40s, I'll probably pass on the ride. If I'm caught out, it's gotta be a lot colder to keep it parked. Like the others, the salt is scary and the liquid brine they use here is a major PITA. Snow sucks.

My usual bottom limit is 40.  Then I have the full-face on, winter gloves, long johns, and heavier socks.  Don't have any heated gear, so that's why I set 40 as the bottom end.

With the heated seat my bottom limit can be a lower temp than other parts.  That seat works well :2vrolijk_21: !

LOL, you're right  Don, the heated seat definitely raises the "bottom" limit.  :P  The heated hand grips help alot too.  I probably could ride in colder weather now, but just chose to keep my lower limit at 40.

Ride to your own limits and comfort level. I ride all year when their is no salt or brine on the road. Normally won't go out unless its above 40 F; however, you can start at  40 F and come home in the twenties this time of the year. Once the Snow flies we have to wait until it warms up and rains to wash the roads off. The salt and brine is tough on the bikes if you're not carefull. Heated grips is a must for cold riding!

Ice is our limits!

All bikes have the elecric hook up so cold is not a factor.
Ice is a stay home condition.

A place?  You mean Kathmandu?  Geography I can handle (even if it is itty bitty Nepal).  Weird critters that look a cross between my dog and a raccoon just freak me out though... ???

Like most year round riders in areas that have "winter" I have enough electric stuff to keep me very comfortable in about any colder temps.  Also, like others, ice and snow are no go's.  The only real lower limit I impose on myself is about 15 degrees (F) because below that if you break down out in the country, thats life threatening.  My knees won't let me walk very far, so I am dependent on the cell phone, or somebody passing by.  Not worth the risk, but otherwise I enjoy cold weather riding.

Ride Safe.

40 degrees used to be my limit also. Add in the wind chill factor and it was perfect training for the ski season.  Maybe I can lower the numbers this winter now that I have the heated grips & seat, plus the fairings (never had those before).

at last years Maggie Valley ride , on my WG3 with no heat, no windshield ... 29 , also did a 300 mile from 29-47 on the same bike.   Now that I traded her in on my 103" FLHX with heated seat /grips and the dragon wings .. even 40 is toasty , waiting for the colder temps with an evil grin. 8)

Mid to upper 20's is about my limit, and it needs to be sunny then.  We don't get snow and ice, except on very rare occasions, but we get some 38 degree and damp days that just chill me to the bones.  At temps below 60, the chaps come out, mostly because they offer good protection from both wind and road rash, also the heavy leather jacket with zip out liner.  We get some 20 degree nights here in B'ham, but if it's sunny, it'll usually warm up into the 40's/50's.  Heated grips and seats are the best thing since sliced bread.

I was doing a job for a woman, and noticed something outside where I had my tools set up, went out and this one had been stealing small tools, pilfering them under a bush, went to scare the critter off and get my tools back and it got down right mad hissing and showing me its teeth. hit it with a rock and it climbed up in this tree and got in the attack position!!!!

It's still in the original box. I just need to dig it out.

I commute year round in the northeast (PA) on my bike.  I have the electric hookups also and my gloves can't keep up by themselves, but by turning on the heated grips and the heated gloves I can ride as low as 7 degrees at 70 miles an hour.  That's the coldest I've ridden in.  However, after riding 50 feet on a solid sheet of ice covering the entire road and then sliding 25 more on the side I now only ride when I know the roads are dry and clear of major salt/cinders.  Thankfully that little mishap was with an old dresser a few years back and I walked away. If I've driven the road the day before and it was clear and the sky didn't pee on my parade I'm back on the bike and riding to work the next day.

I just love the looks my co-workers give me when I ride in and it's 10 degrees.  Since they think I'm nuts they leave me alone the rest of the day!  Works like a charm. :bananarock:

Now for the funny part.  I hate the cold!  I won't even go outside unless I have to when it's below 50.  I don't mind on the bike becasue the heated gear and FXRG outer wear keeps me as warm as my truck and it heats up faster.  One of these days I have to move to Florida!

Best Regards,
J-Carr

Above 105 the bike is parked.
Below 30 is definitely out of the fun zone as well.

Depends how far I'm riding. Usually around 40*, no windshield or fairing! I rode to work once when it was 30*, it's a 45 minute ride, cold!!!

Much above 100 or below 30 and I'm parkin'.  However I'm more likely to push the lower limit than the upper limit.  I'd MUCH rather be cold than hot.

Fortunately, here in Oklahoma it doesn't get extremely cold like some of you have to deal with in the northern tier of states.  If it does get really cold in Oklahoma it usually doesn't last but a day or so.

For me, I am good down to the lower 20's and up to about 110 degrees.

Great riding temps for now here in Oklahoma - Rode in short-sleeves all weekend.  Third week of November and upper 70's to 80 degrees over the weekend and for a couple more days, but wouldn't you know it - 4 day holiday weekend coming up and a cold front is going to drop us down to upper 40's and low 50's....Give me some Global Warming for the next three or four months!

Same here in North Alabama.  70 degrees today.  Yesterday was awesome too.  Had to stop and shed the sweater.  Hope this keeps up for awhile.

We have not been anywhere to push the limits like some of you folks.  I don't know what our limits would really be.  There is a difference between having to and wanting to.  We have become extremely spoiled.  All three four wheel vehicles we have, have heated seats.  And we use the heat feature, even if it is only chilly outside.  But heck, I use the heat feature in the lazyboy chair too.  I think if my bed had that feature, I'd use it too.  Jamey and I rode around 300 miles on Sunday, we both had on our underarmor, fleece under the leather and the turtle fur neck wraps.  We were pretty comfortable, temps were in the high 30s when we left home, warmed up to the mid 60s in the afternoon then dropped back down to the low 40s.  Jamey runs a little cold most times anyway, but he was chilly to touch, hands, face, body, but I had the benefit of heated grips, and I was down right warm, everywhere.  We had no other electric on.  We own it, just were not using it.

How does the cold affect Jamey's back?
Had our electric liner on Sunday and remember thinking this feels good on my back. (like a heating pad)
