Just as I'm reading your post, my wife is making popcorn the old fashion way with a popper on the stove.  Now that is just about the best smell!

Probably take a week or so of airing-out and Lysol to get the smell out. :nixweiss:

We have the Whirlypop stove top popper at home.  That's the ONLY way to pop popcorn.  But, I'm in a hotel room tonight and thought I'd try a bag of Act II out of the vending machine.  Bad idea. :'(

Brian...gots to be careful with that microwave chit.......every microwave is different, it seems, and burnt popcorn is some stinky chit, that's for sure.  I'd hate to be stuck in a motel room with that smell all night.  Go have a drink or two and you won't notice it any more  :drink: :drink: ;)

Just like the instructions on the microwave popcorn bag advise, one must monitor the microwave, but if one chooses to ignore that advice, at least have the awareness to use the microwave in the lobby.

Hmm.....burnt popcorn tops Bel-Ray 85W140, that's for sure, but I have experienced smells far nastier:  certain aircraft, certain waterborne vessels, certain worldwide geographical locations,  :puke:

Yes.  Boa poop.  Big Boa Poop.

background:  while in Florida, I inherited a burmese python from a troop that worked for me..  he was keeping it in the dorms, and it got too big and then went sick.  short stry is, I took it home and believed the guy at the pet store that said, "the more often you feed it, the faster it will heal"...soooo  very soon I have an 18', 275 lb snake, that gets pissed if you don't feed it every other or third day, so I fed it.  (she was kinda scary ricocheting around the house looking for something to eat...    anyway, when she crapped, it was not only on an epic scale of size, (depending on whether we fed her a rabbit or a goat)  but it smelled like:
 a dead rotting animal
wrapped in a moldy cat-pissed nylon carpet,
on fire!

much worse than popcorn.  period.

oh yea, and when you hit an extra zero button on the M/W and set it for 23 minutes instead of 2:30, and the polish saugages actually catch on fire while you're in the head taking a ........  yea, that's pretty bad too!  And the fire dept actually charges you for showing up when it's an automated alarm!!!  dammit!  I mean really, I had it mostly out by the time they got there anyway....

Not at all, I would like to see a few pics of that 275lb snake. That would be a little scary to have loose in the house, of course it would take care of the cat problem. ::)

It might try to take care of your ass too!!  I don't want anything around the house where I'm not sure about who's at the top of the food chain  :nervous: :nervous:  I'm not scared of snakes, but something 18' long coonin' around the house looking for something to eat, and pissed off at the same time, would make me reeeeeeeeeeal uncomfortable.

ya...   that's a part of why she went to live at the Ranger school camp..  I just couldn't bring myself to cage her, and she was getting more and more aggressive.  latched on to my knee one day, (pretty much engulfed the whole joint with her mouth), and it took the wife and a buddy to keep her from rolling up on me while I worked her teeth out of my skin, and we were pretty much done thinkin' a giant snake was a cool pet....  It was cool while it lasted though...  I'd walk her outside and freak out the passing joggers, didn't have a "dog crappin' in my yard" problem at all,  and ALL the cute little teeny-bopper chicks wanted to hang out...   (even the wife thought that was funny)  It just takes WAYY too much to keep an exotic pet.  I think that's why they call them exotic...

Holy chit! That would have been it for me too!

I was just out in the kitchen thinking about this post and the worst smell I have ever experienced would have to be while I was at Cape Cod last Summer. Donna and I were walking along the beach in the late afternoon. Warm, breezy day, the wind was coming in off the water. We get down to where the beach turns toward a small cove and the breeze turns around and starts blowing right at us. There was a smell in that breeze that almost bought the two of us to our knees. Just up ahead there was a dead bottle nose dolphin. It was only a small one, 3 feet long or so but very dead. It was by far the worse thing I have ever smelled.

Cat puke, snake crap and dead dolphins, what a great thread... :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Incendiary peas...came home one night after playing rugby with a snoot full and cooked buttered peas just sounded sooo good, put 'em on the stove, kicked back in the overstuffed lounger with yet another beer and the tv on low-awoke 3 hours later to a thick black dense burned sphincter smell permeating the house and all the smoke alarms working overtime. It took four days of constantly cleaning EVERYTHING in the house-walls, cabinets, sheets, carpets...couldn't eat peas for some time. Phew! :drink: :confused5:

I had a similar experience while making habanero pepper sauce.  I had them simmering in white vinegar.  Imagine the acrid smoke from smoldering peppers in the air.  The smoke alone (containing capsacin) was enough to burn the nose.  I had asked my 11 year old daughter to turn the stove off to let the cooked peppers steep the rest of the night.  She mistakenly assumed I was trying to reduce the liquid portion and left the stove on without telling me to drive off some more vinegar.  It's scary to wake up at 3AM because your nose is burning from pepper smoke.

Scott, was the python litter trained or did you have to go hunting like a turd burgler when you noticed the offending odor?

I don't think there are many smells worse then burned food on the stove. In my career as a firefighter we have often responded to calls where there hasn't been anybody at home and smoke coming from the residence. Burned food gives off a very distinctive smell that usually can be noticed blocks away. I think the worse I've ever smelled would probably been what started off as hard boiled eggs.

Them snakes get big when they get loose down here...I saw one burmese around 20+ foot in a lake not far from the house...I think you'd need a 12 gauge to kill it.

Wow, much more acrid than anything I have been able to muster in my many years of blundering...I can only imagine what was going through your mind as your nasal hairs began beating a hasty retreat!

Scott, was the python litter trained or did you have to go hunting like a turd burgler when you noticed the offending odor?

Now that is hilarious! I am rolling on the friggin' floor at this point! (good thing, as the air is much cleaner there, less odor...) :huepfenjump3:

I imagine it musta.
Out in the glades on an airboat you can catch a whiff of some very smelly things, they are a little hard to spot sometimes in the tall sawgrass.
With the heat stuff gets stinky fast!

This stuff wouldn't even help python poop, but it works good on lots of other stuff.
Redneck Whiskey wing sauce and chicken dipilatory.

Are we changing this thread to the Best Smells now?  I didn't get the memo.

How about showing up at Aunt Gladys's house for Thanksgiving and the windows are steamed from her cooking all day and the odor of turkey, stuffing, and pies meets you at the door.

Are we changing this thread to the Best Smells now?  I didn't get the memo.

How about showing up at Aunt Gladys's house for Thanksgiving and the windows are steamed from her cooking all day and the odor of turkey, stuffing, and pies meets you at the door.

Sounds like that beats the "feetsnazz" of my locker room at work.

I was driving a rented Harley in Sarasota, FL in Feb 2006 with two of my brothers when I noticed a GLORIOUS BBQ aroma.  At the next stop sign I asked them if they noticed it.  All did.  We decided to find out where it came from and have lunch.  We found it.  About a mile back, after we parked and walked around.  Lunch was wonderful.  Would have missed this great experience in a car.

Amen, we have some trailer road side stands that are so good it makes you wanna kick your momma in the back for cooking for you!

My friend Old Milton is one of the best of the old school hog cookers I have ever met.  He don't mess with no briskets or nothing fancy like chickens, just P.I.G. hog!  ...And I eat a lot of bbq.
He learned from his grandaddy! And I am tellin you what, I mean....son, he can make wild boar taste good, don't know how.

He just had a stroke and is hurtin, we all hope he gets better soon.

Scott, was the python litter trained or did you have to go hunting like a turd burgler when you noticed the offending odor?
it's shannon...   :P       She only turded when she exercised, so for the most part, she only pooped in the front yard after she been running arould for a little while...     Kinda like being litter trained...

Gut shot antelope is about the worst thing I ever smelled except for fews day old dead guy.  Few days old dead guy is definitely worst.  All of that is if I don't count some of my own cooking though.  Now that's some bad chit!

Reminds me of the obvious. Road kill baking on hot asphalt. Sitting still in August over some sort of bloody / furry smear is a smell not forgotten.

Yup, that's a doozy.  By October it's just a dark spot on the shoulder.

I have to give a vote too to the coke ovens of a steel mill.  Before Bethlehem Steel shut down in Lackawanna, NY we'd roll the windows up if we were within 10 miles of it.  It didn't help.  All of the homes and businesses in the area were gray with soot too.  It's much cleaner now but there is still a hulking brownfield that once employed 20,000 on Buffalo's waterfront.

Sounds like the sister city to Gary, Indiana...!

I was wondering when someone was going to bring up the old dead guy... I didn't want to be the first.

Once you have been subjected to this, there is nothing that is worse... and you end up noticing it more frequently afterwards.

We get them at work... they call them "sudden deaths"... I have always wondered why this term is used when the person passed about three weeks previous... nothing sudden about it!

I step off the elevator in an apartment building now and can immediately tell that there is someone on that floor just waiting to be discovered.

Another smell that is instinctual is the smell of burning flesh... of our variety.

You may not know the source, or what it is at first, but when you smell it, the hair on the back of your neck stands up.

Yuck but true.  Have occasionally wondered why it works that way too.  It is like the mind somehow locks on the odors of old dead guy or people meat and then always try to warn you of it again.  Has to be some instinctive taboo or something.  Those really are worse than gut shot antelope or my own cooking.  Though my own cooking would still rate way up there.

Like you I didn't want to mention these two either, but agree they are smells you'll never soon forget or want experience again.
