Ohlins Shocks?
« on: July 12, 2009, 11:34:37 PM »

Has anyone ever used Ohlins??? http://76.162.149.2/gpage32.html

After my 'issues' with the Bitubo,  this or the works may be my only option...

Or any comments on Howard from Motorcycle Metal?? Seems like he knows his stuff

No experience with Ohlins, but Howard on Motorcycle Metal DOES know his stuff. I bought one of his swing arm bushing kits and it works as advertised.

I tried the Öhlins on my '08 SEUC. Was not impressed and very expensive. I am happy with the Progressive 440's on the '09.

Ride safely,

I rode a Road King last year that had Ohlin shocks on it.  Not a lot.  Perhaps 40 miles or so.  In that limited run I wasn't impressed.  A little improvement over stock.  But not nearly what the Progressive 440s accomplished on my bike.

Can't speak to any adjustability the Ohlins might have to improve them.  But on that bike they were nothing special at all.

Stick with Howard, but go with Penske shocks. I had the Progressive 440's and they were a great improvement over the stock shocks. I then went with the Penske's and they were as much as an improvement over the 440's as the 440's were over stock.
Howard will valve them to your specs and they are great in both sucking up the harsh bumps and the handling in the twisties.

Just put on a pair of Works Performance shocks on my '08 SERK.  I only have about 30 miles on them, but so far so good.  My wife and I ride two-up 70% of the time, so when I talked to Tom at Works (very helpful), told him our weights, and he had them built to those specs.  I got the Street Trackers with the ARS (Adjustable Rate Suspension, like the Progressive 440's) with black springs.  Tell him your a HOG member and you'll get a 10% discount.  We're heading out tomorrow for a 800 mile ride through the Coloroado rockies.  I'll let you know what I think when I get back on Monday.  In the 30 miles we've put on them, I can definitely tell a difference in overall ride and handling.  My wife also says she notices that the bumps aren't as harsh as they were with the stock air shocks.

The Ohlins are on...  Howard had them custom built and drop shipped from Ohlins.  I received them in two days... Spent alot of time talking with him about my needs.  He actually has a form that MUST be filled out about weights before he will start..  He does offer certain forum discounts from retail...

In a matter of 4 days I had the opportunity to try out different shocks...

Stock: SUCK! - Spinal Damage
Progressive 440's (my mechanic had a pair) : 15% over stock,  but bottomed out
Bitubo (tried w/o the bags and sleeves) : 45% over stock
Ohlins : 70% over stock

Granted the progressive and Bitubo's were only on for a very short time over a bumpy street...

I am going on a 1000+ mile trip sat,  and will have much more input later...

The very first thing I noticed with the Ohlins was how chitTY my front end is!  I am going to go with the AK-20 come winter!!!  But she handles like a completely different bike... Even when I take a HUGE bump,  I will still get some seat air,  but it doesnt break my spine landing!!!!

Howard does know his stuff... Even if you are looking at other brands,  its worth a call.. One thing I really do like is that he doesnt bash other companies (esp Traxxion,  as he has great respect for them) And on that note,  Max and Dan @ Traxxion have been superb to work with!

Again,

Just my opinion....
