Something strange with my radio
« on: June 20, 2010, 05:00:58 PM »

I have the stock HK radio in my SESG with a hawg Wired amp and speakers and everything was fine--up until Friday that is....2 hrs into the trip to Laconia this weekend the radio just stops playing--the radio works and changes sources and songs, but no sound. Turn it off and let it rest for a while and then it works again--for 10 minutes then it stops. That's the way it was all weekend. Then today it was a little cooler in the morning so the radio worked for 2 hours then the same thing happened. By this afternoon it was really hot again so the radio only worked for 5 minutes then it needed 15 minutes of rest before it worked again. My question is---radio or amp??? Anybody ever run into this one???

Radio....most likely vibration damage. Something we see in the 06 and 07's with broken fairing brackets, but we sometimes see it in newer models with heavier speakers in the fairing and amps sitting on top of the radio. Radio needs to be repaired and the vibration mod needs to be reinforced

Bike has 3500 miles on it and no fairing  bracket damage. Speakers and amp went in about 1500 miles ago. Why would it work sometimes???

Vibration damage puts very small cracks in the audio circuit. Either on the board or across some components. You need a microscope to find them. The cracks are so small that the least bit of heat can affect the connection. Turn the radio off and the circuit cools enough to make connection and your audio is back. Over time, the condition will get worse. The fact that it happened at such low mileage is unusual, but there are many possible contributing factors. The aftermarket units alot of us use are even more susceptible to this condition. Once the audio circuit is reinforced, the possibility of reoccurance very remote.

What can you do to fix it??? And what will it cost me??

fFx is as stated before. Find and repair the damage and reinforce the audio circuit. For price and warranty info, check out our web site at www.ironcrossaudio.com or give us a call

It may be the amp is going into a shutdown mode due to excessive heat.  Give Hawg-Wired a call.

What speakers are you using?

Remove or bypass the amp. If it continues to shut down the radio is the problem. If it does not shut down the amp is the problem.

Thought about bypassing the amp also. I was just curious if anybody else had this issue. I guess each person could have a different problem.

Hawg wired speakers also.

It won't be the speakers since you loose output to both at the same time. It will be the amp, radio or a lose connection. Start with bypassing the amp that is the easy part and a logical troubleshooting step.

Good luck with it.

Definitely not a loose connection. I was going to wait for it to happen again, leave everything on, rip the fairing off then quikly bypass the amp and see if I get sound.

I was just hoping for a "yeah..that happened to me and it was....."

If you do that, you may actually get the audio back as you move everything around. Take the amp out of the system and ride it. It's hot enough here now, the audio will cut out.

Sounds like the switch might be the problem to me. You could try a contact cleaner or just replace the switch. This is the best contact cleaner I have ever found. It really works well. Problem is that you would need to get to the back side of the switch to get the spray in it, if it's an open frame type switch. Or just replace the switch while you're in there.

Either way I hope that's all it is...

Not the switch

Went to the dealer, showed the tech how the switch will allow the sound to come out of the speakers.  Tech says "let's put a switch in it and see if it works" this sounds reasonable to me  ;D

Tech says " I put the switch in but I need you to tell me if this corrects the problem" of course I say "i'll let you know". I rode 3 miles down the road and the radio sound shuts off, I flip the speaker switch and the sound comes back. Just like it was before the new switch  :nixweiss:

 I can't take it anymore, I just laughed  ;)

Marty,

Two radios with the same issue (no audio) and the response you get from toggling the speaker switch sounds like vibration damage to the radio. We would like to talk to you about it to help you get it resolved. The possibilities are many and varied and would be too long to type out.
Give us a call when you get a chance.

Had this happened to me on the first day of a two week road trip. Sound just quit. Controls worked fine and CD's played, but no sound in speakers. It turned out to be the fuse in the Hawg wired amp. Not blown, but one or the legs was broken due to the vibration on the amp. Replaced the fuse and now have sound.

Reading this string is like deja vu. Having same issues with my CUSE4 that has only 1200 miles. Iron Cross gave me some good tips for dealer to check next week when the bike goes in for this problem. I assume if the dealer finds the problem and it turns out to be the radio, they'll replace it under warranty with a new one. But here's the rub with that solution, because I doubt Harley has told H-K to strengthen the offending circuit board, if that's the problem. So they give me a new radio and in short order I have the same issue again? I know I am predicting the future, but from reading postings on this site I am concerned that's likely to happen to me too. Then what? Guess I better check IC's website for repair and modification. Thanks for listening. :o

Took the CUSE4 in yesterday afternoon to have dealer troubleshoot why radio keeps cutting out along with a couple other issues identified on CVO site. Service writer and tech looked at bike and said the issue may not be a bad circuit board at all, but rather that I had the CB radio function activated too and that something to do with "squelch" whatever that is. The tech adjusted said squelch and siad I should try driving with it as adjusted. Apparently the CB will cause radio function to cut out if the "squelch" setting is set wrong. The damn radio is way too complicated for my liking.

I started having the radio issue recently.  Playing great and then no sound.  Rode almost 800 miles this past weekend with no tunes for most of the trip.  Sounds just like the circuit board issue.
Mine is under warranty, so I will try to recoup some of the $$$ spent for the warranty, for now.

Did you ever find out why it does this? Mine has started doing it lately and when it does I can flip the speaker switch to another position and it comes back. sometimes it will do it again in this new position and I can flip if back to the original position and it works again. The other day it cut out the second I opened up the the throttle to pass someone....which makes me think it may be vibration related.
