Extend the warranty or modify the bike
« on: June 24, 2010, 12:13:43 PM »

I'm agonizing over whether to modify my 09 SE Fat Bob or extend the warranty. I have had this bike for sale and frankly it can't be given away or so it seems. The warranty runs out in a few months. I like to mess with my bikes so I am leaning towards modification. Heads and cams. On the other hand, it would be nice to ride for years knowing that anything goes wrong it is pretty much covered. Opinions?

Well, since you seem to be looking at a long term relationship with that bike, I would suggest you do it up the way you want it and forget the extended service plan.  If you do a complete coordinated build, from the bottom end up using good quality aftermarket parts wherever possible, you'll not only have a much better engine but it will probably last much longer than the stocker as well.  I wouldn't ignore the bottom end if you plan to make any significant increase in output.

I don't want to get that deep into the engine. I was thinking a good street port on the heads and some middle of the road cams (Andrews 54H) plus SERT tuning would not tax the bottom end too badly.
