for those with axtell cylinders.
« on: December 03, 2010, 11:27:29 PM »

after 5000 miles of rattling and oil burning the 110in is being built to a 117in, and my shop is using axtell cylinders and pistons. i was just wondering how many ppl have them and how they are holding up and what mileage they are at. my service guy told me that they may have to hone the cylinders and re-ring it around 50000 miles. just wondering what the masses have done. thanks

I've got their cylinders.  3.9375" for a 107" build of what was a 103". The company supplied other work as part of the task.

They were good to work with.  Prompt with work as promised and good quality.  No complaints at all.

Best guess is about 25k miles on the cylinders.  No issues in use.  Don't expect any.  From what I saw in handling the parts and assembling the top end saw nothing that would lead to expect an unusually short lifespan.

Axtell has a long history of quality components, unlike H-D.  Don't worry about it.

When my SERK had the dreaded head gasket leak @ 3673 miles, I opted to upgrade my motor to a 117. The shop used the Axtell 4.125 (117) kit. I experienced no problems with that build.

However, I was still chasing dyno numbers @ that time so I removed the piston and cams in the scooter @ 15606 mies. I went with the components I'm using now, T-Man TR-590 cam and JE flat top pistons.

TR (T-Man) insisted the cylinders be checked as he was certain they would be out of round. They were slightly off, one by .006 so JE 4.135 pistons were used. I have no idea if this is "normal" but TR was certain enough to have it checked.  :nixweiss: I have know gotten over 35000 miles on her with no cylinder problems to date. I'm quite satisfied with Axtell's products. And I love my 117 ci motor.

Jeff,

Maybe .0006" out of round?  .006" is a country mile...

Thanks Scott.

Was it six ten thousandths Jeff (.0006) or six thousandths (.006)?  .006 along with the really short skirts on those stock pistons would have sounded like Keith Moon on dru.....  Well, like Keith Moon playing normally.

Scott's post got me thinking. So I pulled my receipt on the T-Man build. The note says "Cylinders are severely out of round. Cylinders are anywhere between .003-.006 out of round." My shop contacted Axtell to see if they would pay for the bore/honing. Axtell did not due to mileage.

Axtell has such a good rep with their cylinders.  Not dismissing the shop.  Just one of those times would have like to have your own mic's in the holes.

thanks guys,
Black Diamond, my shop uses T-mann products and i beleave he was the one that recommended to check them at the said mileage.  i have T-manns heads and cams in my road king and will be doing a stage 2 or stage 4 on the heads for my ultra, along with the axtell cylinders and JE pistons,my builder is looking a his tr-662-1 cams for this build, but my builder and T-mann haven't gotton together to dicuss which stage head and cam will work with the torque monster motor i want.  how do you like the tr-590 cams?

I am running the T-Man 625 lift cam in my 124 as I wanted a low-mid range torque motor.  My dyno sheet shows 125 lb lbs torque at 2500 and peaks at 140 ft lbs at around 4400 RPM.  This cam gives me exactly what I was looking for.

I really like the TR-590s. The torque is right now! I'm @ +100 ft lbs @ 2200 rpm to past 6000 rpm. 120 tq / 116 hp. My buddy has the TR-625 cam in his 110. I'm more torquey out of the hole and we stay the same after that. Both are great cams. The 590 seems to launch and lurch while the 625 is smooth and sneaky. I looked at the 662-1 cam also. TR recommended the 590 after we talked at lenght.

Jeff,

I'd guess the cylinders didn't show up from Axtell that far out of round.  I suspect they saw some heat from your first build.  At least that's what my experience with them would lead me to think...

I know the SM talked with Chaz twice on this issue. I was there for the initial discussion. I also recall they (Axtell) did give me a discount on the JE over-sized flat top pistons.

That TR625 is a great cam.
