110...here we go again....new lifters
« on: May 13, 2011, 05:03:04 AM »

My first set of lifters crapped out at 40,000 miles or so.  At 43,000 or so, noise started coming back - took it to the dealer at 46,000 cause it sounded just like it did at 40,000.  BTW, lifters were noisy ONLY at cold start AND for the first 2-3 miles (but really noisy, didn't want to rev it above 2000-2200 rpm!!).  BTW, oil pressure is always fine per the gauge right from startup.
Now dealer says 2nd set had 2 bad lifters and they are replacing all with new again!  They have checked oil flow, passages, etc and all is good.

Anyone else have this experience??

Tennisman, on my 09SEUC my lifters are quiet when they are cold. As soon as the engine is hot they are noisey between about 2200 and 2800 RPM.(actually they cycle from noisey to quiet and I always have good oil pressure) It gets irritating during some riding conditions, but I am not going to do anything about it until something breaks and the bike needs work. Naturally my local HD (everything costs $100.00) tech took it for a ride and said that it is normal. Next oil change gets Amsoil 60 WT synthetic. It keeps my 95 Heritage with S&S 107 quiet so I will give it a try in my 09.CAHDBIKER

You sure that noise is the lifters?
110's have the piston slap noise between 2200 and 2800.

"...Now dealer says 2nd set had 2 bad lifters and they are replacing all with new again!..."

Maybe he'll install a new set of "C" lifters.
It's official, 18538-99C lifters have been released from the MoCo this week.
Around here, have had plenty of great luck with the good ol' "B's".

I bet it's piston slap.. my FLSTSE2 has that problem at only 4000 miles...  Cylinders are over a thousandth out of speck.. too large... only hear it from 2500 - 2800 rpm

Why do I have this strange feeling that the "C" stands for Chinese?

Yes, it's lifters.  The first time they replaced all 4 lifters, the engine was stone quiet at startup.  (So it's also NOT piston slap).  Definitely lifter related.
When did they go to suffix 'C'?  My first lifter replacement was in Nov, 2010.

There are different options on lifters ,my tunner is making a new set that have been hardened and revalved so thet won't score and make noise.  jdo

Even my woods directional lifters are noisy at start-up (this is noted in the instructions)

no sign of them failing.. but piston slap?... yep.. 27-3400 though

My 08 had the lifter noise , but stopped when I put the S&S cams and lifters in.
So at Mile 3 on the 11, I did the same thing, only this time I used the S&S lifters with the anti drain back.
Very nice at start up, cold or hot, plus more reliable than stock junk.  (IMHO)

Funny thing though, my 08 didn't have piston slap and the 11 does. (DAMN)

SBB, you are probably right. I had a situation with an S&S 107 engine a couple of years ago that you would swear was valve train related, but it was piston slap. Luckily it was still under warranty.  I took my 09 into the dealer right after I got it and told the tech about the noise. He took if for a ride and of course he said that was "Normal".

Anti-drain back on a lifter???  If that were so, how does it adjust as the parts expand as the engine goes from cold to hot?  The lifter must allow oil out to account for expansion.

Ops, I stated it wrong.
Lifters can bleed down after prolonged pressure, that's why I stated (anti drain back )
S&S calls it  the HL2T limited travel kit you get improved cold starts and high rpm valve timing accuracy!
Check it out on there site.
They help, that's all I was trying to say.
Also, they  are a way better product than factory, so its a win win.

Dave,
That makes more sense!  I would try them except I'm under ESP so Harley calls the shots....since this is the 2nd time in short time span, I don't pay the $50 deductible either.  Just hope this time I get longer service life.

If the noise is indeed piston slap, what is the real recourse...just wait for it to break for HD to fix it?

If you have piston slap (excessive piston clearance in the bore), than HD should fix if under warranty.  Otherwise, if your mileage is "low", I'd complain to HD customer service as this should not be.  If you have high mileage and no warranty, it's on you.

Valve springs were one thing my dealer said might be the problem too but it turned out to be the bore out of spec... HD is fixing my bike on warranty... first they were going to send over sized pistons and dealer was to hone the sleeves to a tight fit but now they want to send new cylinders and jugs.  should see them this week...

Well, the lifters on my 09 have always annoyed me.  But it's got worse and worse to the point that I can't stand it any more.  Starting the bike from cold sounds like a kid dragging a stick along a wicket fence, I exaggerate not!  >:(

And with the numerous reports of roller failure on 110 lifters, I'm cautious, as I'm just about to do a 4000 mile trip.

So, on the recommendation of Don 2LR, I have obtained a set of Feuling HP+ lifters, and I'm just awaiting the arrival of SE Tapered adjustable pushrods. All being well, I'll change them out this weekend.  :nervous:

Joe, at least you got your dealer to admit something being wrong. As I mentioned in a earlier post when I complained about what I thought was lifter noise my HD tech took it for a ride and said everything is normal. Honestly it is more of a irritation then anythng else and if I had loud pipes I might not even hear it. My oil consumption is very low and with the fulsac stage one kit the power is sufficient. When it is cold or or when I am on the throttle I don't hear the noise so I will let it be until something breaks then get cylinders rebored/new pistons rings/ Andrews 54 cams/with new map. I will have it done at an Bennett's Performance in LongBeach Ca. They fixed a lemon S&S 107 engine I have in my 95 Heritage so I know they can do a good job on my 110. CAHDBIKER

Now that's funny right there :D

I think most HD techs have to be deaf. They can't hear any rattle, ping, knock or whine. I might have to quit this forum, I used to like Harley Davidsons. ::)

I'm forever hoping I don't have any issues but my question is, I had hi comp forged pistons and SE 259 E pro twin cams, installed before I left dealership when new, so if down the road I have issues would they be covered under warranty?

Well, my "alterations" were also done by the dealer and I have had several warranty items fixed by the dealer, so, for what it's worth, IMO (this and a $1 might get you a cupa joe), you're covered.  One caveat: it's all up to the dealer and if he'll go to bat for ya.  But, legally, I believe you would have a case a lawyer would take on if the dealer would try and back away from the warranty.
Again, JMO, and you know what they say about those, opinions are like a$$holes and we all got 'em and their all full of _ _ it!
