Clear Coat Peel
« on: May 13, 2006, 08:34:21 PM »

Any one with a cherry experiencing the clear coat peeling up from the candy coat???  :o  I have three spots  on my fairing, three more on the front fender, and one on the tour pack.  I almost looks like someone dripped something over the bike when it was being painted.  Still working on Harley to fix it,  having trouble with that.... :-/

RockinCVO,
First off welcome to the site. And one word of warning this place will cause you to spend money. :D

As for the clear coat peeling I'm currently dealing with similar problem. I have noticed the clear coat peeling around the three screw holes on fairing where the windshield/screen attach. I have notified my dealer of this and waiting to hear back as to what the MoCo is going to do about it. I'll let you know what the outcome is, and please keep me informed of what/how your situation turns out.

BTW - So you can be officially welcomed we would love to see your  [smiley=cherry.gif]

Rockin,

Not sure if what I have is the same thing, but I do have a spot on the top rear of the tank about 1/2" long by 3/16" wide that has the appearance of a touch-up.  This spot did not appear until the weather turned cold last November, and initially looked like a small c/coat drip.  When I uncovered the bike this spring, it had grown to the present size, and there are two "chips" or off color  spots.  Rather strange, since I've never applied touch-up to the tank.  In fact, while it is obvious visually, you cannot feel anything with your finger.  Lacquer thinner doesn't have any affect, so it isn't touch-up paint.  I'm starting to think the paint vendor did a touch-up repair and then applied c/coat over it, and the cold weather caused it to surface.  Haven't had it back to the dealer yet, due to weather and distance, but I will bet they accuse me of touching up the tank.  I'll invite them to try the lacquer thinner trick to prove it isn't touch-up paint - hopefully they are bright enough to figure out that touch-up is lacquer, and thinner will remove it almost instantly.  If not, I guess I'll have to go over their heads.  BTW, other folks on this site have had finger prints appear in the paint over time as well as other defects.  I'd suggest you look everything over carefully before the warranty expires.

What was there reply? I'm still waiting to hear back from mines. They have seen it, and know that it isn't right, just waiting to hear what the MoCo is going to do about it. I'll let you know what happens.

Stealer reply was screws were overtightend ?  I have chrome trim in place know. Seems to cut the wind  better with the chrome trim. OCD baby!

What did/are you going to do to prevent clear from peeling anymore? My concern was that it would continue on down the fairing. I had also thought about the chrome piece.

Heard back from mines today, and got the same reply. I'm going to get some clearcoat touch up paint, and the Chrome "Bar & Shield" Logo Windshield Molding and forget about it. As you said "OCD baby". [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]
