110 dies at dealership
« on: October 17, 2006, 08:49:52 PM »

Ok.....heres a good one for you. Just got back from Maggie Valley and had the time of my life. Have 3250 miles on my O/B cuse2 and it is spectacular. Just showed up down here in Daytona for Biketoberfest and pulled into Destination Daytona. Just as I pull in the bike dies. It won't start again. It will turn over and it is not an electrical issue as everything works including security system. It just won't run. It has fuel and compression but I am guessing no spark for some reason. The last time I started it before it died I did feel a funny burp through the compresssion releases but other that that I am stumped. ECM issue?

Luckily, I was literally at the entrance to the service department when it died. Go figure. Better it happen there than last week in the North Georgia mountains. Holy chit!

Any ideas oh wise ones?

Has it been running hot or have you had any excessive vibration?

ALthough these bikes run hotter than hell that was not my issue. Its only about 80 dgerees down here right now and the first two weeks I had the bike it ran in 100 degree heat and 90% humidity. So hot my girlfriend would not ride. These bikes may have an overheat kill switch but it seems to me the thing would have to be melting into the asphalt to trip the switch.

I'll let you all know when I find out what it is.

Pull the fuse panel on the right side and look at the fuse associated with the ECM...15 amp (blue) on the bottom....

If blown, this is exactly what was blowing on my 0/b SE Ultra....Replace it for a while....

This is interesting/coincidental both bikes this happened to (if in fact it is the same thing) are B/O. Be interesting to find out how close in production these two bikes were, and if the same team built both of them. Things that make you go hmmmm?

Thanks Shodan,

Where the hell were you when I needed you? It was closing time at the dealer so I left it. They called this morning and said it was the 15 amp mini-fuse that controls the ecm. They replaced it and I bought a couple of extras for my tool kit. Please let me know if you find out what is blowing them. How long do yours last?

By the way, I also carry a spare 50 amp main breaker as I had an issue with that blowing on my 02 SERK. It only happened once but it was not a good time for it to die.

Are you trying to start a conspiracy theory Firedood? Always stirring it up?

It was really nice meeting you in MV Gary. I'll give you a yell if I am ever up that way.

If it does it again pull the fuse connectors out of the fuse block and solder the wires to the connectors where they are crimped. Sometimes Harley ( or the company contracted to make the harness) does a lousy job of crimping the connectors to the end of the wires. Heat builds up and actually melts the fuses. A hand held IR thermometor will also show bad connector crimps.I have repaired a few with this problem.

That compression release may have something to do with it. If they are all the way open, you may not be generating enough compression to fire.  Same thing happened to me yesterday when I discovered a broken piston ring on my 1978 Motori Manerelli.  I would say check the compression anyway as is and see if that's it. On the other hand, a fuse it could be too... BTW welcome to Daytona!

I would love to get my old vin number with a person who could compare issues...

The HD dealer removed and replaced the entire main wiring harness.  Primarily this occured during stop and go traffic, but then again - the bike ran extremely hot so I dont know.

I like that theory. Makes all the sense in the world. I'll have to check out the crimps.

You would think Shodans dealer would have figured it tout before changing wiring harnesses though. Maybe they need to hire you. Is there a service bulletin going out on it? Just curious.

There is no srvs bulletin I know of out there on the crimps. But I do know through working on a lot of Harleys over the past 35 or so years the crimps do go bad. If you hook up a battery charger turn it on then turn on everything on the bike and let it sit for 15 min. ( No motor  running just all the lights on including putting tape on the brake lever to turn on the brake lights) . Then scan the wiring harness with an IR thermometer. It will find hot spots from bad connections even under the wiring bundle where a lot of ground wires come together . Bad crimps will also trip breakers not because of the load imposed but the resistance of a bad crimp on its connector builds up enough heat to trip it. Im talking over 175 deg.

Didnt read all the posts, but as a guess I would say it was the
ECM Fuse ...  have to take it out in good light and look at em.  Seems they can blow ...  15 amp blue one hard to see if it seperated in the unit ...  experienced it over biketoberfest :)

Blew 2 of em, but that was because of some testing I was doing ... bike turned over just never fired ....

Zippers is working on the Thundermax for 07 Ultra's .... seems the Alarm system is complicating matters so they are working through this hiccup.

Nothing more to tell other than it was installed the bike started then blew the fuse....  Then another fuse...  So now you know.
