Whats up with these Batteries
« on: April 03, 2014, 11:36:47 PM »

Battery died.  Didnt even give me a warning.  One minute bike starts, the next  time nothing.  Going with Deka for replacement.  From what I have been reading, got a good deal from techbatterysolutions.com.

Wife's Road King did the same thing. Deka is what I bought to replace it. Many other members are using Deka batteries. I think you will like it.

Just picked up a the same one for mine shipped from Batterymart for just under $100. Original battery is 3 1/2 years old and the battery light came on after winter storage. Read the code and it said low battery voltage. Figured the harsh winter did it in. Turns out the stator is bad >:(

Boy I wished I could say I ever got more than two years on my batteries in Texas. I always keep the bike on the trickle charger when not ridden but I can't confirm that helped.  The first battery was having a hard time cranking for a few days and then left me stranded.  The replacement lasted another two years and the first time it was slow cranking I had it checked and they told me it was fine.  Charged it overnight and the very next day it would not crank over long enough to start the bike.

I personally never go over 3 years on 1 battery. I have a "thing" about dead batteries and to me after all the money I have spent on my bike to be dependable, I can live with spending $100 every 3 years for a new one to make sure I don't end up with a similar story.
Probably dumb on my part but certainly not he dumbest thing I do when it comes to the money I spend/waste on it

People think I'm nuts because I replace the batteries on our "road bikes" every third year.
I'll replace the battery in my '13 CVO Ultra (I picked the bike up in Oct. '12) before we leave on our trip through TX, AZ, NV, UT, CO, and then back home to MI.
Long trips and hot weather are h**l on batteries and electrical systems.

I used to be one of those who scoffed at changing the battery preemptively every 3 years, since I had a good history with the batteries in all my vehicles lasting 5 to 6 years.  However, in more recent times I've had both motorcycle and car batteries fail just like the one in the original post; start and run fine today, won't even turn the starter over tomorrow morning and the battery tests defective with an internal failure.  So now I'm back in the camp of just changing them out after 3 years.  This also has the beneficial effect of being able to plan ahead and buy the battery at a discount online versus having to pay top dollar at the local thieves den (Harley shop) to get a dead bike running ASAP.

Btw, I'm convinced the reason for the earlier and more sudden failures lies in the cheapening process all manufacturers seem to have embraced as the holy grail these days.  Lighter materials and designs have lead to more internal failures of cell connectors and plates.

I had the same problem with my 2Yr old Hd Batery in my New flhtc.Bike never sat more than 2 wks without  being on tender. Battery died on a ride home (40 miles away) from a view surrounding states. Since then I always change out battery every 3 ys with a Deka .I ride out of state 90% of time and I d rather not take a chance again.I had to ride Bitch on my Buddies bike and we were Both hiding our Faces. By the way when I checked dead battery It had Voltage but no balls ,Cranking amps were nil. It must have shorted within.I put it on tender and within 5 min light was green but Bat was DEAD.

What battery do you buy?

He's gonna say Deka... that's what he told me to buy before and it works great... at nearly half the price!

Deka makes the HD batteries.  Toured the plant in PA a few years ago.

I replace bike and car batteries every 3 years, not interested in being stranded or worse have my wife stranded somewhere.
Simple and cheap precaution.
