I laid the bike down........
« on: March 16, 2012, 09:20:40 AM »

.

Last night, I took a turn well past the abilities of the bike. I went into a turn hot, around 65mph....which was way too much for this 1,000lb bagger.

...my prospect was behind me and witnessed the entire event.

This is what happened(minus anyone on the bike with me)...

...The tires came completely off the ground at over 60mph, sliding sideways, sparks flying everywhere....and I saved it!....fuggin impossible....

....the prospect saw the whole thing,...he said " I have no fuggin idea how you saved that...you were laying completely on the side of the bike....sparks flying everywhere,...then  I saw you jerk your body weight hard to the left.... and at over 50mph you brought it back up on the tires without even stopping...unreal"

He said I didn't miss a beat,...slid, jerked it back up, dropped 2 gears, AND KEPT ON GOING.....

...I'd like to say it was my 26 years of experience on 2 wheels that saved me.....but luck was probably more likely.

I wish I had video...it was awesome...total adrenaline rush....

ground flat...LOL

I'm not fixing it...because they are some sweet azzed "beauty marks"......what a rush!

All I can say is great save and dont try it again!

I did that on my 03 Fatboy at about 50MPH.. in the rain.. so no sparks.. or not a lot of them.. sliding on the engine guard and not really slowing down because the roads were so slick, and without the tires on the ground, no way to stop... feet still on the floorboards, hands still on the bars... and I'm heading towards an intersection.... thinking "Oh Chit!"

I cant recall exactly what I did... something to the effect of yanking on the bars hard left and the front tire bit traction and the bike stood up!... I was able to stop at the intersection, pulled off the road and contemplated life for a few minutes....

makes the hair on my neck stand up just thinking about it.

So would you say the HARD LEFT or Right is a good Defensive move when sliding ? I,ve slid of the seat and let the bike go it's own ride.

It's only skill if you can repeat it at will. Not my recommendation however. Can't imagine the adrenaline that gets released into your system at a time like that. Glad you're ok!

Reality sucks! ???   Kind of like Jon (Jonga)......when you're really good, you can low side your bike on a curve like that, flipping it end over end, into the hillside.  Come off of it with a couple scratches and then ride the bike 200+ miles home.   :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

All the jerking to the left in that picture wasn't going to help that guy a bit.  You might want to be sayin a gratitude prayer for saving yer hide on this one. :2vrolijk_21:

Likewise.  Unless done perfectly, as was the case here, I would think you would run a pretty good chance of high-siding when the tires touch down again.

The best defense is to not put yourself in that spot... I was on a very soft turn in the wet and just going too dang fast for the conditions.... I dont know if I would have tried to do that in a hot corner... (I probably would have anyway... with less favorable results)

I must be getting old(er) noticed I've slowed down quite a bot from before...

Tank,

Glad you are okay and that this thread need not be moved to the Rider Down thread.  It looks like the front and rear crash bars as well as the floorboard pan and support took the street on.  Anything else?  I second JC about prayer.

Great to know you made it out of that situation. That's one trick that probably won't work that perfect again, you can thank your crash bars and floor boards from preventing you from going completely over.

Tank,
You did an amazing job of saving that bike.  I'm trying to visualize what happened to bring the bike back up.  Sure hope I don't have to try it.  The fellow on the bike behind you said, " you were laying completely on the side of the bike....sparks flying everywhere,...then  I saw you jerk your body weight hard to the left.."  You said in a reply, "pretty much what happened to me...hard jerk left...kept on motoring."

Does that mean the left bar came back and the right, back of the front wheel touched down and levered the bike up?

I agree. Not a bike issue but more of a rider skill challenge.

I think I basically jerked the wheels back to contact the road....essentially causing a mini "high side"...which snapped the bike back up on the wheels.

Holy Moly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A bunch of us are taking a ride today down some great Missouri roads with a lot of fast sweeping turns. I think I'll be running that picture in my head all day at every turn.

Glad you made it out of that situation unscathed and were able to tell us about it.

Ride Safe!!!

You had a bunch of angels looking over your shoulder that day.  :2vrolijk_21:  It's amazing you didn't high-side at that speed when the front wheel grabbed the pavement.  I'd say you were running on about the 90/10 scale on that one.  (90% luck/10% skill).  Glad you're okay and the bike apparently just received minor cosmetic damage.  Abso-fricking-lutely amazing!!

If you were running a car tire, you would have never crashed............... or is it......... you would have died a fiery crash.

Well You sold me on the saddlebag crash bars! I always thought they were really ugly! I have read enough lately and seen pics/ videos that it got me thinking I should have them. both for BSR and CVO paint protection. I finally gave in and ordered a set last night from Surdyke. Now to figure out what to do to keep BSR legs happy! I am sure this bar will cause her discomfort with stock peg setup. I had to move stock pegs to top hole because of bruising on her calf's from the bag lids! I know the bars will be an issue! I did not like to look of the comfort bars at all so I guess I am in the market for some adjustable peg mounts for passenger? Any suggestions? Thanks! More money.... :nixweiss:  FACE

I take it your BSR is vertically challenged if the lids of the saddlebags bruised her calves.  There are adjustable pegs out there.  I think Kuryakin makes some, but I believe they are used in conjunction with the passenger floorboards, not pegs.   :nixweiss:

Reddevil you are correct in your assumption. She is only about 5'2". Sounds like this will get expensive if I have to buy floorboards for her also. Perhaps I should be shopping for a taller BSR?   FACE  :nixweiss:

Face, if she's like any other BSR, it cheaper to keep her.  :D  She'd probably be happier with floorboards and if you get the CVO adjustable ones, they can sit up pretty high.

In the first photo I noticed that you lady extended her arm and hand out towards the pavement. That is an instinctual movement but can result in some serious injuries. I have done the same thing a few times myself in bad situations and gotten badly injured. It is really difficult not to make those instintive protective jestures, but I reccomend she practices grabbing the bike instead, so she has leverage to eject herself from the bike if needed. My wife learned about that when we hit a ditch on an ATV and she didn't grab the rear bars. Now, my wife practices that every time something startles her on the bike and actually used it to eject a few days ago when I did something stupid at a very slow speed. When I look at that picture above I just picture the bike going on over and jamming her arm into the oncoming pavement, OUCH! Glad you pulled that one out, Good job!
