Title: Fuel line problems
Post by: LouFXR4 on October 29, 2016, 02:44:21 PM
Riding home the other day and I smelled gasoline. Pulled over and gas was leaking badly from the fuel line coming off the petcock. As you can see in the photos The line was wearing on the metal and was bent at a 90degree angle. I smoothed the metal with a little filing indicated by red arrow. The problem is that the fuel line bumps into the bracket holding the ignition coil and had to be bent a lot to make it over to the other side of the engine. I can't imagine this is proper. Anyone have any ideas about what is wrong? I think the previous owner replaced the petcock and maybe it wasn't done correctly. My bike is a 2000 FXR4.

The old leak and bent fuel line.

I smoothed the edge of the ignition coil bracket but that was wasted time.

New fuel line installed but no room for the choke without bending the fuel line 90 degrees.

Doing more looking around the parts shops online I did find a petcock that has the fuel line coming out of the bottom, not what is shown in my service manual but I think that must be the answer to this problem. I'd like to hear from anyone who may know. Thanks, Lou

Check out the Pingel 6000 series petcocks.  Universal configuration allowing you to point the line however you need it (including down).  Good parts.  The Pingel stuff always used to be my go-to to replace the OE petcocks.

It's been a very long time since I've messed with a Harley carb setup, but I'm fairly certain the stock fuel lines had formed bends.  It looks like someone may have replaced the formed line with a straight piece of hose, and then routed it incorrectly as well.  Trying to use a straight piece of tubing and forcing a tight 90° bend is a good way to restrict the line btw.

Thanks Jerry and Twolanerider. I'll go to the dealer today to see what they may have but from past experience, finding some parts for this bike is nearly impossible, ie. ignition switch. If I have to go with an aftermarket part I will, I've done some reading on the Pingle petcocks and there are pros and cons as far as I can tell but my choices are fairly limited. Once again thank you for helping and I'll keep y'all updated as I get this figured out.

That is not a stock (OE) fuel line. Somebody has replaced it with a piece of rubber line at some point. I doubt that you will be able to get the original now, but maybe. If not, Twolanerider has the answer with a Pingel petcock.

I think I have fixed this but I haven't tested it yet. I bought a petcock for a Sporster which has the fuel line coming out the bottom. I flipped the vacuum tube nipple to the top to match the old petcock configuration. $28 plus tax. I'll know if it works tomorrow.

This is how it look when I installed it. It runs through a hole that seems like a natural path for it to follow. Thanks for the input and suggestions.

The new petcock works great and the bike is running better with a more direct route for the fuel.  Lou  :2vrolijk_21:

Just remembered this thread.  If anyone sees it and is looking for any of the now obsolete pre-formed fuel lines I've got three.  $20 each if you need one.

You can always turn the petcock inward a little to lessen the bend.
If any of you are still using that oem EPA petcock, throw
it away and purchase a non vacuum unit.
The oem one WILL strand you 1 day!
