AR-15
« on: August 05, 2012, 11:50:54 AM »

As popular as the Do you Carry thread is I'm surprised there is no AR thread.

So here goes.
My first was a colt way back when before the Fed AWB. Got rid of it because of the "imposed fear" at the time  :'(

Picked up a S&W M&P 15-22 back in December. Although not a real "AR-15" in name, it is non the less a neat "black rifle" in an AR configuration. My grandson loves it, except for the length of pull. F'n New Jersey with the stupid adjustable butt stock evil feature.

Wish there was an area nearby to just go plinking. But next best thing is our outdoor range. I have made it a habit to pick something out on the berm at 200 yards and try and move it around with the 22.
This is a surprisingly accurate 16" rifle.

Finally got back to  a .223 AR style. In my post in DYC, http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=16970.msg1046075#msg1046075
I told how I came about the S&W M&P 15 GI. This #2 on my list was right under the M&P piston. MY LEO son is issued a LMT Piston for patrol and off duty carry, so he is big on the piston guns.

So, my first question for the AR experts, have you looked at or tried one of the piston conversions? Like - dislike?

And my 2nd question: I am looking at the Nikon AR specific scopes, M-223, P-223 and the P-22.
Nikon markets a smart phone app for many of their scopes, which allow matching rounds to scope and generating ballistic info.

The P-22 is just a bit less then the P-223 and geared towards the 22 round. But the built in compensation is limited to 140 yards. I already found out I like playing around at 200 yards with the 15-22.

With regards to the M & P-223 variants (wonder if Nikon had S&W in mind when labeling these scopes?), these come in two flavors, a BDC reticle and a ranging turret. Have you tried either of these? Likes dislikes?

Hey porthole, if you lived out here in the sticks by me, you could shoot any time you wanted too!! I'd even help you burn some powder!!  :rifle: I don't have a AR style but hope to get one before they say I can't! I'd love to assault a pack of coyotes with one of those! Twice deer hunting just about 30 minutes from where I live I've had at least 7 coyotes come by at within 30 to 40 yds. That AR-15 would be a blast then!! Another time I had 8 hogs at about 130 yds. They are a little tougher but took 2 of them down with my .06!  :jack: Shoot Straight, Ride Safe!!

Build yourself a nice AR-10 and you'll be in complete bliss..  The National Match variants will blow holes in target centers well ober 400 yards..  I've got a couple home built AR-15's in my safe and they are true fun blinkers and pretty dam accurate at that.. My AR-10 is also home brew, but no matter how you look at it,, An AR-10 wil cost over twice the AR-15...  If you ever get really bored and want some fun   :P  buy one of the AK47 rifle kits, they come really cheap now days.  I've built three of em so far and had more fun building them then shooting them..  Well almost,,  actually, i enjoy shooting the AK then i do the AR-15's.  Dont know what it is, maybe their distint sound, their smooth shooting and amazing accuracy..   Now lets discuss ammo for these TOYS..    if you havent stock piled yet, do it now..  Every day brings a new surprise when buying ammo..  It use to be hard to get, but not anymore, you can get all you want but you PAY OUT THE NOSE.....  I've built my stockpile years ago and thinking about turning what i have into a some easy money..  But think i'll save it for the ZOMBIES   :nervous:

This could be an interesting thread and wondered myself why one hasn't started.. Thanks to Porthole this one should beat out the Beer Thread in no time..   :2vrolijk_21:

In regards to Gas Piston advantages;  unless you plan on shooting over a couple hundred rounds a month and lazy on cleaning your rifle, there are none..  The combat guys like them because of longevity in the battlefield and they tend to be much safer to fire after water submersion..  There are arguments out that Gas Piston are less accurate than Gas Tuber, but i've never read solid evidence of such. If it were me,, i would spend money on optics or furniture.

I thought about a piston conversion, but I can't justify the cost. My Colt upper does well and I don't put enough through it to make cleaning a real chore. What I'm really interested in is a Para Ordnance TTR. That may be my next choice. I'm not at all familiar with Nikon scopes.

I have a DPMS Bull Sweet Sixteen, it's a ball of fun and accurate. I need to put new optics on it, but really want to go blast some coyotes. Maybe we could set up a CVO / AR-15 GTG.... Just sayin.

Here is my S&W M&P 15-22. This is the Very similar in size and operation as a full 15. A bit lighter.

Front and rear sights are removable and for NJ compliance there is no flash suppressor. This is a factory 10 round magazine, which is nothing more then a 25 rounder with a different color follower and pinned at the 10 spot.

The most significant difference is the lower is a polymer and the buffer tube is blank, non functional, but is functional as far as the stock adjustment goes.

The M4 butt stock is the same as on the regular AR's. And for New Jersey it is pinned. You can see the roll pin above the screw.

S&W M&P 15. This started out as a non compliant New Jessey rifle and was sent to a gunsmith prior to purchase.
The significant difference between this and the NJ legal variants are, flash suppressor, M4 barrel, M4 collapsible stock, dust cover, forward assist, magazine size. And the standard non rail type fore grip.

Being able to get the model I wanted meant having Troy fold down battle sight, full quad rail, forward assist, cover and M4 stock. Some day I will leave Jersey and make it adjustable again. It is actually very easy to do. BTW, the Bushmaster Jersey rifle has a one piece "looks like " M4 stock.

This picture is the 22 laying on top of the 223

Great thread, great timing.  I just picked up Red Jacket Firearms model on Saturday.  Lots of fun.  My army buddy is disappointed I didn't get a piston model, but I don't plan on putting thousands of rounds a month through it.  If I end up needing I guess I could have it changed.

Optics:
For the 22 I have a BSA "Sweet' 22 (that is model designator). it is an OK scope. But I found that the 22 does a good job at 200 yards, so I plan on an upgrade and that was the gist for my Nikon inquire.
The BSA, although high power, doesn't hold zero.

http://www.amazon.com/BSA-6-18X40AO-Sweet-Adjustable-Objective/dp/B002A12VLI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1344279438&sr=8-2&keywords=bsa+sweet+22

For the 223 I have two 1 powers, a Trijicon Reflex and an Eotech on loan to see if I want to buy.

The Trijicon has a 6.5 MOA, so I have about ruled that out. Just doesn't work for with target practice. The EOTech holograhic is a 1 MOA item.

I seriously looked at one of those, my local dealer has had one for months.
I'm sticking with common stuff now.I bought a Weatherby PD 12 gauge. It arrived with out a rail as was pictured. And no one makes accessories for it. Future shot guns will most likely be Remington or Mossberg.

You can get anything you want for the AR-15 platform

I have a  Spikes Billet upper and lower, cmmg piston conversion, wilson I think 16" barrel, tinley trigger, floating foregrip[or whatever they call it]  colapseable stock, single pointsling, hell I forget the rest I'm a 1911 head, a gunney friend of mine picked the parts this thing is made of, built it bout a year and a half ago, I seem to remember m4 package or something like a chamber rated for .223 and the .556 or something like that.  gonna get a eotech for it, also got troy Industries folding sights, I forget what kinda grip and prolly a few other things about it.
Oh yeah the piston conversion  cmmg made it  but I dont have anything to compare it too no experience with a  stocker, though I do remember the floating front grip is special in a clearance way  when you have a piston conversion. it does work great though. don't know anything about nikon optics and I really am new to AR's, if I remember correctly I think Indiana has a dumb law that involves a tax of $250.oo for a barrel shorter than 16" or 18" ? somthing like that, any way I got the shortest barrel I could without this Bullchit fee for nothing.
Yes I do realize you dont have to put a lot of $$ in an AR to have a good running shooter.  knew that before I built it.
