AR-15
« on: August 05, 2012, 11:50:54 AM »

As popular as the Do you Carry thread is I'm surprised there is no AR thread.

So here goes.
My first was a colt way back when before the Fed AWB. Got rid of it because of the "imposed fear" at the time  :'(

Picked up a S&W M&P 15-22 back in December. Although not a real "AR-15" in name, it is non the less a neat "black rifle" in an AR configuration. My grandson loves it, except for the length of pull. F'n New Jersey with the stupid adjustable butt stock evil feature.

Wish there was an area nearby to just go plinking. But next best thing is our outdoor range. I have made it a habit to pick something out on the berm at 200 yards and try and move it around with the 22.
This is a surprisingly accurate 16" rifle.

Finally got back to  a .223 AR style. In my post in DYC, http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=16970.msg1046075#msg1046075
I told how I came about the S&W M&P 15 GI. This #2 on my list was right under the M&P piston. MY LEO son is issued a LMT Piston for patrol and off duty carry, so he is big on the piston guns.

So, my first question for the AR experts, have you looked at or tried one of the piston conversions? Like - dislike?

And my 2nd question: I am looking at the Nikon AR specific scopes, M-223, P-223 and the P-22.
Nikon markets a smart phone app for many of their scopes, which allow matching rounds to scope and generating ballistic info.

The P-22 is just a bit less then the P-223 and geared towards the 22 round. But the built in compensation is limited to 140 yards. I already found out I like playing around at 200 yards with the 15-22.

With regards to the M & P-223 variants (wonder if Nikon had S&W in mind when labeling these scopes?), these come in two flavors, a BDC reticle and a ranging turret. Have you tried either of these? Likes dislikes?

Hey porthole, if you lived out here in the sticks by me, you could shoot any time you wanted too!! I'd even help you burn some powder!!  :rifle: I don't have a AR style but hope to get one before they say I can't! I'd love to assault a pack of coyotes with one of those! Twice deer hunting just about 30 minutes from where I live I've had at least 7 coyotes come by at within 30 to 40 yds. That AR-15 would be a blast then!! Another time I had 8 hogs at about 130 yds. They are a little tougher but took 2 of them down with my .06!  :jack: Shoot Straight, Ride Safe!!

Build yourself a nice AR-10 and you'll be in complete bliss..  The National Match variants will blow holes in target centers well ober 400 yards..  I've got a couple home built AR-15's in my safe and they are true fun blinkers and pretty dam accurate at that.. My AR-10 is also home brew, but no matter how you look at it,, An AR-10 wil cost over twice the AR-15...  If you ever get really bored and want some fun   :P  buy one of the AK47 rifle kits, they come really cheap now days.  I've built three of em so far and had more fun building them then shooting them..  Well almost,,  actually, i enjoy shooting the AK then i do the AR-15's.  Dont know what it is, maybe their distint sound, their smooth shooting and amazing accuracy..   Now lets discuss ammo for these TOYS..    if you havent stock piled yet, do it now..  Every day brings a new surprise when buying ammo..  It use to be hard to get, but not anymore, you can get all you want but you PAY OUT THE NOSE.....  I've built my stockpile years ago and thinking about turning what i have into a some easy money..  But think i'll save it for the ZOMBIES   :nervous:

This could be an interesting thread and wondered myself why one hasn't started.. Thanks to Porthole this one should beat out the Beer Thread in no time..   :2vrolijk_21:

In regards to Gas Piston advantages;  unless you plan on shooting over a couple hundred rounds a month and lazy on cleaning your rifle, there are none..  The combat guys like them because of longevity in the battlefield and they tend to be much safer to fire after water submersion..  There are arguments out that Gas Piston are less accurate than Gas Tuber, but i've never read solid evidence of such. If it were me,, i would spend money on optics or furniture.

I thought about a piston conversion, but I can't justify the cost. My Colt upper does well and I don't put enough through it to make cleaning a real chore. What I'm really interested in is a Para Ordnance TTR. That may be my next choice. I'm not at all familiar with Nikon scopes.

I have a DPMS Bull Sweet Sixteen, it's a ball of fun and accurate. I need to put new optics on it, but really want to go blast some coyotes. Maybe we could set up a CVO / AR-15 GTG.... Just sayin.

Here is my S&W M&P 15-22. This is the Very similar in size and operation as a full 15. A bit lighter.

Front and rear sights are removable and for NJ compliance there is no flash suppressor. This is a factory 10 round magazine, which is nothing more then a 25 rounder with a different color follower and pinned at the 10 spot.

The most significant difference is the lower is a polymer and the buffer tube is blank, non functional, but is functional as far as the stock adjustment goes.

The M4 butt stock is the same as on the regular AR's. And for New Jersey it is pinned. You can see the roll pin above the screw.

S&W M&P 15. This started out as a non compliant New Jessey rifle and was sent to a gunsmith prior to purchase.
The significant difference between this and the NJ legal variants are, flash suppressor, M4 barrel, M4 collapsible stock, dust cover, forward assist, magazine size. And the standard non rail type fore grip.

Being able to get the model I wanted meant having Troy fold down battle sight, full quad rail, forward assist, cover and M4 stock. Some day I will leave Jersey and make it adjustable again. It is actually very easy to do. BTW, the Bushmaster Jersey rifle has a one piece "looks like " M4 stock.

This picture is the 22 laying on top of the 223

Great thread, great timing.  I just picked up Red Jacket Firearms model on Saturday.  Lots of fun.  My army buddy is disappointed I didn't get a piston model, but I don't plan on putting thousands of rounds a month through it.  If I end up needing I guess I could have it changed.

Optics:
For the 22 I have a BSA "Sweet' 22 (that is model designator). it is an OK scope. But I found that the 22 does a good job at 200 yards, so I plan on an upgrade and that was the gist for my Nikon inquire.
The BSA, although high power, doesn't hold zero.

http://www.amazon.com/BSA-6-18X40AO-Sweet-Adjustable-Objective/dp/B002A12VLI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1344279438&sr=8-2&keywords=bsa+sweet+22

For the 223 I have two 1 powers, a Trijicon Reflex and an Eotech on loan to see if I want to buy.

The Trijicon has a 6.5 MOA, so I have about ruled that out. Just doesn't work for with target practice. The EOTech holograhic is a 1 MOA item.

I seriously looked at one of those, my local dealer has had one for months.
I'm sticking with common stuff now.I bought a Weatherby PD 12 gauge. It arrived with out a rail as was pictured. And no one makes accessories for it. Future shot guns will most likely be Remington or Mossberg.

You can get anything you want for the AR-15 platform

I have a  Spikes Billet upper and lower, cmmg piston conversion, wilson I think 16" barrel, tinley trigger, floating foregrip[or whatever they call it]  colapseable stock, single pointsling, hell I forget the rest I'm a 1911 head, a gunney friend of mine picked the parts this thing is made of, built it bout a year and a half ago, I seem to remember m4 package or something like a chamber rated for .223 and the .556 or something like that.  gonna get a eotech for it, also got troy Industries folding sights, I forget what kinda grip and prolly a few other things about it.
Oh yeah the piston conversion  cmmg made it  but I dont have anything to compare it too no experience with a  stocker, though I do remember the floating front grip is special in a clearance way  when you have a piston conversion. it does work great though. don't know anything about nikon optics and I really am new to AR's, if I remember correctly I think Indiana has a dumb law that involves a tax of $250.oo for a barrel shorter than 16" or 18" ? somthing like that, any way I got the shortest barrel I could without this Bullchit fee for nothing.
Yes I do realize you dont have to put a lot of $$ in an AR to have a good running shooter.  knew that before I built it.

Just read in paper this morning that Calif Sen Yee just wrote a Bill to present to congress which closes the loop hole banning use use of a tool, (Or Bullet Button) to remove Assault Weapon magazines. Of course all in the wake of the recent theater shootings. This will really suck for us Californians.  Anyone else seeing similar reactions in your state? of course Yee has tried this same bill several times in the past but now he has this shotting deal to back him..  And this time it looks like there is steam behind it.   ..      Just sent off another 100 bill to NRA...     :2vrolijk_21:

California Assault weapon law has a provision allowing one to own and operate an Assault Weapon if the magazine can only be removed with a tool and law specifically points out that a Bullet can be considered a tool. So, some genius invented a simple magazine button guard you install over the weapon magazine release button. Once installed you can't operate the magazine release without a tool to insert into the new magazine release well, vaula a bullet tip is the perfect tool.  Check out the attached video which explains better.   http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2012/05/01/bullet-button-used-to-get-around-california-gun-laws/

OK, I know about the bullet button, didn't know it was considered a loop hole. Although, and I am not in agreement with the whole concept, I can see where that magnet adapter could be a real stickler.
Surprisingly, 3000 miles away here in Jersey I have seen one of CA rifles. My local dealer had one shipped by mistake.

Don't know much about black guns except i like them. ;D

I own a S&W ar-15, stock unit except for red dot optics. I hope to obtain the mp-22 version very soon, been shooting allot of 22's lately, 200 bucks for 5k rounds how can ya go wrong. I've got some nice 22 plinkers in my arsenal. the 22 round is underrated IMO.

Hey Napalm, when did they start letting you Merrylanders have black rifles and buy ammo in bulk?   ;D  spyder

Spyder,

When the Feds ban on assault rifles expired....in Maryland, you cannot buy clips exceeding 20 rounds (you can posses magazines greater that 20, go figure)....most assault type rifles purchased in Maryland are handled like pistol purchases, 7 day wait.

The one I purchased has a heavy barrel and fixed stock, so it is like a hunting rifle, bought it & carried it out the same day.....

Sad to say, I found out about buying ammo on the internet and having it shipped to the house from the news media covering the Colorado shooting...didn't know you could do it....do now and have had two shipments arrive...

Plicking away...

Surprisingly, 3000 miles away here in Jersey I have seen one of CA rifles. My local dealer had one shipped by mistake.

The magnet is considered perminat, thus Illeagle. However, you can buy a index finger glove having the button imbedded on the glove making it handy to release magazines with a bullet button. The loop hole allowing us Californians to own black Guns is our savorior, otherwise we are screwed. Bullet Buttons are also available for AK47's, although a little more PITA to operate. What part do you disagree with?  I don't like idea of having to use a bullet button, but it's been better than NOT enjoying our weapons at all.  I'm certainly not looking forward to dismantleing two AR 15's, one AR 10, two AK47's and two AK74's...I,ve got a slew of other long guns that I enjoy but I can tell ya, nothing is more fun thana weekend with family target shooting with our black guns...   :2vrolijk_21:

The whole idea of having to use a tool. No different the the stupid idea of having to have adjustable butt stocks pinned here in Jersey, or the threaded barrel 'cause we might put a james bond silencer on it and make a whisper quiet .223 capable of taking out targets at 2000 yards.

For that matter all the silly parts of the anti states, NJ, CA, NY, CT IL.

We can't have an AK. Can't even have a 60 year old M1 Carbine! And my local dealer has two that every time I go over and pick it up he smiles and says "you can't have that"

AMEN!!!

How often does that really work? All you have to do is buy some votes.

Term limits - long time overdue.

One of the biggest anti gun pols is our very own New Jersey 88 year old senator "F" lautenberg. 28 years so far in the senate.

here are my favorite open site 22's. no aluminum, polymer, or pot metal involved. :drink:

the black guns have open sites but require optics to really dial them in. i'm looking for some now. i knew this going in and looks like i'm committed to the task.

i noticed at the gun show everyone is buying the new type weapons, the classic gun prices are reasonable now. ;D

Ruger's 10-22 is the most popular .22 in it's many configurations.  Just a really fun rifle to shoot.  Of course, mine is Leupold scoped.  ;) har.  spyder

The Ruger 10-22 was one of my favorite plinking rifles until I picked up a Henery Survial Rim Rifle last summer. The Henery is ver light, fast and accurate,.  An all out fun rifle.   :2vrolijk_21:

I love mine, got it from Grandpa for Christmas just before I turned 10.  So this Christmas it will be 40 years old.  Still works as good as the day I got it.  Still loads of fun to shoot.  Cheep to shoot to compared to any of the other guns I own except my GSG -1911-22.

I went with the S&W M&P15OR and made a few changes to it.

Then I got the CMMG Stainless Steel .22lr conversion kit for it to save in ammo.  Fun conversion and a easy to switch between 5.56 and .22LR

After reading some of the comments here I'm damn glad I live in a state where you can still own and shoot what you want. I have owned probably over a hundred AR variants over the years with many of those being ones that I built to sell. I've had everything from an original civilian model AR-15 with the triangle hand guard, to a varmint model with a 30" barrel to full auto M4's. I have Class 3 weapons and I'm a former law enforcement officer so full auto's are a luxury that I tap into occasionally. Currently I have 5 AR's but my favorite is my Bushmaster Delta Commando. It's a 10.5" barrel CAR and it's easy to maneuver around car doors and inside the house. Whatever your taste in AR's might be, buy 'em, stock up on ammo and keep your trigger finger in shape. You just don't know what the future is gonna bring.

I own a LWRC M6A3 chambered 6.8 SPC . For me the LWRC ARs are the cadillac of carbines. Beautiful, reliable and all made in the USA.
Also own a LWRC PSD M6A2 Pistol chambered  5.56 NATO. Bad ass gun.

Enjoy your shooting, be safe.

Yea it is pricey, but I love it. I got it from here awhile back http://www.4scopes.com/4x32_dual.htm  At the time they had the best prices, haven't shopped around in a while so I don't know if they're still the best deal in town. I have dual illumination with green horseshoe reticle, it is the best for all lighting conditions IMO

Here's a pic of my baby girl...Sig Sauer 556 SWAT, foldable retractable stock, 3 position gas piston, 3-12 X 44 MIL-DOT illuminated reticle, VERY dialed in at 100 yards.

NRA Tactical Gun of the Year - Very nice pea shooter and something to drool over  :2vrolijk_21:

:orange: Yesterday i got an email confirmation from ArmaLite -  they are shipping my AR-10 A4 National Match Upper Half -- I placed this order last May and it's taken this long. I have an Aero Precision receiver ready and  I'll be coating the complete rile with DuraCoat in Desert Mirageflage Camopak and Black. I already have the furniture waiting with a Magpul PRS AR-10 Sniper Stock and a Millett 4-16x50mm Tactical Scope. I ordered the DuraCoat yesterday..  Cant wait to get this built. The DuraCoat system is fairly easy and forgiving. Last spring I helped my brother do a couple AK's that came out really nice..   Hope to post pictures soon     :orange:

Yeah especially the selection to the right...I know a few of them...might even be related to one or two.

looking at the ruger ar 15. it seems to be a great price point.  For those of you that have build them, can I build one for less than 750?

If you have the tools already. If you include tool cost, may be higher.
It's a great experience to learn the AR platform.

The Ruger 10-22 was one of my favorite plinking rifles until I picked up a Henery Survial Rim Rifle last summer. The Henery is ver light, fast and accurate,.  An all out fun rifle.   :2vrolijk_21:

I have had a 10/22 since I was 9. Still have it, it's had thousands of rounds through it and is still one of the most accurate guns I've ever shot.
