FXDWG2 Fork brace
« on: May 06, 2014, 07:30:21 AM »

I have read the earlier posts on fork brace for the fxdwg2. Mine does not fit, contrary to the evidence posted earlier that it does. It seems that my lower fork slider is of a different type than those mentioned in the other post. I have included some pictures which shows that the clamp bolting the fork brace on is to narrow for the top of the fork brace. The "Clamp too small" picture clearly shows there is no way I will be able to fit this to the fork slider. Any ideas/suggestions on how to deal with this?

And the final "money shot", the clamp simply doesn't fit...

I, unfortunately, had the same problem some time ago and could not get it to fit correctly.  I posted that back in Sept-11.  I am not sure what the problem was but I still have the brace in the garage.

I think the reason could be that there are two different lower fork slides available for the FXDWG2. We apparently have the "wrong" one. For the FXDWG2 owners that has the "right" one: Interested in a fork brace??

A couple photos of the brace mounted on my WG2. Wasn't aware of the other style of lower fork slider. I'm looking to replace mine because after 13 years and 40K miles, they are getting scuffed and show a little pitting. Wonder which style the replacements are.

If the brace doesn't work for you, here's 99 other mods you can try.

Yeah, I've looked through them all. ;D
Wish I had'nt though, I'm starting to get upgrade-fever. Started out slowly with relocation of turn signals and Chock-knob! ;D

BTW, Buy Early, You should make a detailed How-to regarding your windshield for the FXDWG2. My guess is that you would get about 1300-1400 orders on that one!

Harlan, because you brought this back up again, I got my bracket out.  Measure your fork tubes, take it to a good machinist and have him shave off a little on each side of the fork brace clamps for a tight fit and it works great.  The machinist that I used here in Louisville is a retired guy and he did a super job.  He was a little concerned about the chrome being damaged but it came out fine.  The only chrome removed was where he cut the inside of the clamps which will not show since that is against the fork tube.  If anyone needs his name and telephone number, just PM and I will be glad to share it.

Harlan, thanks for bringing this up again!  Since I retired, I spent a little more time on it.

Steve.

Brace as shown was installed on my bike by HD dealer. Required a small honing out to fit the chrome legs.

Afterwards it fits and works great!
